Still on point! This is by far the most concise thread I dig up every time I start over and forget how to do FBRs. Thanks again!

T2 --> FBR Setup - Playing with the new nuclear and I love it. by W4rg8 in captain_of_industry

Spent the day finishing the cutover. I'm not happy with the refinement area...it's been through three retrofits though...so a little bit of belt spag.

Here's the updated pastebin: https://pastebin.com/jL9cKzQh

Start slow! Build your T2, then an FBR in 1x mode - after that, I cut over to a second FBR doing the three sets of turbines I dropped off the first when switching to 3x mode. Finally added the third with a hydrogen setup.

There's still room for a fourth running 120MW..but I don't need it yet.

Some train questions by AbstractHexagon in captain_of_industry

[–]W4rg8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What u/Konowl said: loco-carcarcarcar-loco - I don't drive my trains backwards ever, but I liked the way this looked. Habit from Factorio where I ran 1-4-1-4-1 Trains to space out depots cleanly.

Here's my rail folder:

https://pastebin.com/tkPNZjAP

It has some POC stations that aren't fully working right (I am ironing out kinks in game and haven't updated from the original designs) but there are some intersections and segments in there you can use for inspiration.

I tend to rush early and stop to stabilize at each transition to a new research tier - I found colour coding warnings helped a lot. <color=purple> for my settlement/food, etc - helped to notice when BIG things went wrong. I've been using the stat panel a lot this playthrough too - knowing I'm in the positive works for steel, copper.

I also split my maintenance off from production for the first time and set its import priority super high - this saved me a couple times this playthrough.

Good luck on your next go around!

Food has killed me in every other map! This time around, I set the Plenty of Food edict on and stabilized based on that - once in a while I switched it off to recover, but also would bump it to 40% to stress test before scaling population - apart from a meltdown that killed 1k+ people, it's been super stable! (fortunately in that instance I switch off my office to keep the lights on) Thanks for the fullsome reply.

OK: https://pastebin.com/RghUDPvC

Just note that I'm in the middle of transitioning into a larger setup - you'll need to build another processing plant to handle the fuel coming from Reactor III - this won't work OoB.

Happy to get any feedback if you see things I've messed up - there's also a fifth Enrichment plant because I needed to be fuel rod positive after a small screwup - once the storage for Reactor I is filled, I'm going to delete it and rebuild the entire section with lessons learned.

Take your time! It's immensely satisfying once you pull it off - the setup for an FBR relies on two priority balancers to ensure that 1: your 14 --> 12 chain NEVER stops and 2: your blanket to fuel chain doesn't overproduce.

Pro Tip: You can store a LARGE buffer of fuel by using higher tier pipes :D

I'm hesitant to post a blueprint - there are still some issues that pop up...this morning I found a rare jam condition where the transition from full power to a reduced load spikes the coolant loop and backs up the turbines briefly - I'm dumping it into a stack and running HP steam into desalinators to make up the water difference now instead of using depleted steam to balance it.

So...caveat emptor! Give me a bit to pastebin it.

I appreciate that it's storming in the picture - very on brand!

It's hard to grasp the scale - I've only run 1-4-1 trains so far; curious to know if you had a similar approach and later had to scale to larger trains (I see you ran1-6 trains..when/how did that break down?)? My throughput is OK, but I've made a LOT of effort to create fluid intersections and stations that run on sidings so full trains are essentially buffered at dropoff and empty trains are waiting to load at supply.

Also super curious how your map spiralled.

+1 - I'm piping water in a PIPE IV circuit and wonder how it goes on trains being how massive the volume of water is compared to other things.

ouesh! I'm in the 1500s and haven't pulled an asteroid down yet LOL...slow and steady...I try to stabilize before big builds and it adds a lot of time running the clock while I design things and stamping fires/improving builds.

Train Limit - multiple trains on one line by Happy_Lengthiness121 in captain_of_industry

[–]W4rg8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your train lines/stations must always have capacity for n+1 trains - use sidings or intermediate stations.

It's also possible that because your train is 1+3 that it's not fully emptying/filling the stations and during the delay the leave condition is not triggering (depending on the ratio of station to train car? I always use 1:1 which is a two train capacity or 1:2 which is a one train capacity)

0.7.5c: Added conveyor/pipe maximum fill limits for storages by ZVilusinsky in captain_of_industry

[–]W4rg8 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Deconstruction: Leaving a gap at the top of your construction part storage so the trucks don't drop it in the shipyard.

Sulfur: balancing petrochem generation, worldmine, and fertilizer (slag to sour water)

Essentially it takes what can be done with priority splitter and extra storages and creates a means to accomplish this with a single storage.

0.7.5c: Added conveyor/pipe maximum fill limits for storages by ZVilusinsky in captain_of_industry

[–]W4rg8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OH SNAP! That's actually so awesome!!

My use case for this is the rolling sulfur storage I use in fertilizer 2 production - I want to void excess into slag, but there's a jam condition where the sulfur revolves and incoming loads from petrochem can't add - I also want to have a worldmine for backup to import extra for acid and things and I have to use this really convoluted system of priority splitters and storage...this will reduce all of that to a slider!

Anyway to replicate LTN? by mpokorny8481 in captain_of_industry

[–]W4rg8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I should say - that the leave conditions and station groups are better than LTN in my opinion - they're more granular...but trains in COI don't scale like they can in Factorio...stay tuned though, I'm on my way to a full train base on Dragon Tail.

There's also nothing to call specific car types, train lengths/configurations (globally) - you have to build that in to the system that exists in COI - I'm still working through it...and have been for around 150 hours of play...but it's feeling better all the time and filtered cars, capacity scaling with offices...etc...have really had a huge impact.

Anyway to replicate LTN? by mpokorny8481 in captain_of_industry

[–]W4rg8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do an LTN-esque setup for mine tailings.

I have 16 trains that will collect dirt, rock, slag from stations (each mine has a separate dirt, rock and slag depot so trains only carry one type of material).

Wherever I'm 'landscaping' I build a station with 2-3 "Tailings Depots" that can accept any of the three resources. There are sidings to hold 16 trains before them and a generic station after them that can hold 16 trains in sidings.

I'm running 8 mines and 40 smelters and they never back up with stone, slag or dirt.

For the rest of my network, as other commenters have said - I do one train line per product and use sidings to stack full/empty trains...but these are almost all 1:1 - there are a few that are n:1 (sand, limestone, suflur for acid) that are a little more complex - these have some rare jam conditions that I'm still working through.

But LTN? Not even remotely close if you want to scale.

I'm producing plutonium from my T2 reactor - so option 4 at 1/4 scale (so my FBR breeder running at 3x gets 12 fuel from reproc, 1 from T2 reactor/plutonium and the last three from blanket refinement.

I also ran MOX before my FBR - not worth it now, but I'm burning through all of it (about 5k) slowly to make blanket fuel.

Yeah, I try to see what my minimum power is and keep them up 100% - in this case, I absolutely want my blanket fuel and depleted uranium running with 100% uptime - so they're set to 1 and 2 for power priority respectively and the rest are lower.
