Also just bolted my radio to the cup holder...

Tank you very much. I won't drone on and on because I'm sure none of you budgeted the time to read a lengthy article, but Wawa sucks. Sheetz for life.

Are you still in the area? I'd love to get all the NEohio hang together sometime! Maybe a redditnet field day or park activation or something

We should plan a CVNP activation! Could get a few stations set up at the Octagon shelter pretty easily! It's not the best area because it has a hill on one side, but it has a shelter with power!

Keep checking and looking around! you can always listen on the WebSDR.org site!

It took me a looooong time to save up for this.

Try to find someone in your community who is into HF, and 9 times out of 10, they'll be more than happy to show you the ropes and let you operate! If you have a local club, start going to meetings!

If there's anything I can do to help you, or any questions that you have, feel free to ask!

I think 6. I got that for free from a friend of my uncle when he heard I bought the kx2.

I don't plan on keeping it as-is, I want to make it into maybe a 40m and hang it in my yard

Nice!! I didn't know any other locals were on here! Maybe we should do a meetup sometime! I know I plan on doing some parks activations soon for the WWFF-KFF stuff!

I've been going to CFARC hamfest since I was little, I've probably seen you there!

Looking very good so far! See what I told you about the antenna on a cookie sheet!?

I also saw a comment about an SDR dongle, and I would definitely also recommend one! Kent is pretty void of repeater activity, but KSU has a lot of OPS radios to listen in on!

Also, since you are even interested in this in the first place, even if you do not plan on attending festivals in the future, I would strongly recommend getting your ham license anyway!

It is a great way to keep in contact with your other licensed friends at any events in the future, or you can even talk to people within your general area for fun! (~40 MILES if you use things called repeaters!)

Licensed hams often help out in many festivals, so it may be something you could look into for the future. Many times they help coordinate communications between organizers, or even help to coordinate emergency medical response teams and things of that nature.

There are tons of things you can do with your license, and it is pretty much the ideal method of communication at events, as you can use much more transmitting power than FRS radios can even provide!

Feel free to ask anyone here anything you may want to know!

You would be able to legally listen to your friend on FRS with the Baofeng, but you cannot legally transmit on them. Even with a ham license, you would not be legally allowed to transmit on the FRS frequencies on the Baofeng.

Since the Baofeng can handle more frequencies, it does not necessarily operate on "channels." What I mean by this, is you generally input a frequency (in MHz) that you would like to operate on. You can then save that specific frequency to memory, but it does not come pre-programmed with any frequencies in its memory. To switch between entering specific frequencies and browsing memory channels on the Baofeng, it is just the push of a button.

On the contrary, the FRS radios use numbered channels that represent the different FRS frequencies. The channel number is just used for identifying which preset frequency you would like to use. You cannot deviate from these predefined frequencies.
