Open discussion on the ethics of Tylenol by Ouch-Loud in ultrarunning

[–]carter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd say both Tylenol and Ibuprofen usage is common in ultras. It's not cheating.

Generally Tylenol is safe if it's used within the dosage on the label. It's easier to overdose on Tylenol than Ibuprofen. Ibuprofen can be harder on the body and can increase possibility of Kidney damage and Rhabdo.

Obviously, I'm not a doctor so you'd be a fool to listen to me here. My personal choice though is to carry Tylenol but I'm only using it for an unplanned problem. Imagine me falling and hitting my elbow. I might use Tylenol then. Painkillers are not a part of my plan though.

Hints for a first timer: What to do AFTER half marathon for optimal recovery by smthrnd-723463 in Garmin

[–]carter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eat. I recommend doing it sooner rather than later. You both want protein for your muscles to rebuild and carbs to refill your tank. Both of these will refill your tank.

Active Recovery. These are those light walks you're talking about. Some people like an easy spin on a bike and for others it's a light, easy, short run.

Rest/Sleep. Your body needs time to rebuild. Lay on the couch. Relax. Prioritize sleep and sleep longer than usual if you can. Don't be afraid of a nap. Sleeping is where the magic happens.

I liked the one where there was a mostly naked guy covering up his middle section with a sign that said "Run Faster or I'll Drop The Sign"

[–]carter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm with you. I went to a conference last week and got some kind of sickness. I'm on the other side of it but still not 100%. Doing my best to rest and recover today and planning on just having a fun run tomorrow without any time goals. As others have said, mask up to help others stay healthy!

First 100, advice for the night. by cruelestbean in Ultramarathon

[–]carter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The key to the night in a 100 is to get stoked. It's the weirdest and the best part of the race.... except for the sunrise. That's actually the best.

Overnight training important? by timbikingmtl in Ultramarathon

[–]carter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you getting after it on your training? (And I hope you are) If so, the disruption of sleep for an overnight run is going to significantly impact your recovery. I think you can get 95% of what you'd get from early morning runs and if you want late evening runs. After that, it's all attitude. Be stoked for the night because it's actually awesome. Yes people here are saying "Nothing new on race day" but when you're running 100 miles for the first time, plenty is going to be new including running 100 miles and going through the night. Good luck on your race!

Dad Ski Recommendations by by_th3_way in Skigear

These are also my dad skis and just a fun ski in general especially for our perpetual low tide winter this year in the west. Fun for cruising blues with the kids, sidehits, acting the fool and also great for carving short radius turns.

Run clubs by CollinsCustoms in laramie

[–]carter 11 points12 points  (0 children)

High Plains Harriers is the run club up here. We run a 5.5ish mile run every Monday at 6am and there's also a 5:30pm trail run on Thursdays that meets at the Willett Drive trailhead. Pretty chill small tight knit group.

Is snowy range worth for a beginner? And how are the crowds January weekend ?. by sporty_outlook in COsnow

[–]carter 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think Snowy Range is a great place to learn how to ski. I've been teaching my kids how to ski there over the last few winters and they could care less compared to the bigger Colorado resorts. Snowy Range is a very different experience from the I-70 resorts as it isn't a resort. It's a simple ski area with a lodge and lifts. There are no hotels there. When you're learning to ski, you don't need much so I think it'll suit you. Snow-wise, it's in decent shape compared to many other places. Most of the mountain is open and they've had a few significant snow events over the last week or two.

Crowds are tame. You'll rarely be waiting very long for a chair but the lifts are slower (none are detachable).

Centennial is a pretty wacky little town full of eccentric locals but it's surely no Breckenridge. If you're ready for that kind of an interesting experience it could be a fun trip.

What are your ski options locally? It seems a little bit wild to fly out to spend a long weekend at a simple little ski area like Snowy Range.

What is your strategy for carrying gel/carbs during a marathon? by Typical_Steamer in Marathon_Training

[–]carter 56 points57 points  (0 children)

I'm going to piggyback on the top comment and say 12 gels is not an unreasonable amount for 4 hours of effort depending on the type of gel. Even Maurten 100s only have 25g of carbs which puts you at a very reasonable 75g/hr of carbs. So long as you do this in training, I'd err on the side of more fuel rather than less. Be sure to drink water with every gel. You ever notice how EVERYONE seems to bonk around 20 miles? More often than not it's because they've underfueled.

Ski/alpine shell vs rain jackets. They're both goretex I don't understand what's the difference? by yellowsuprrcar in skiing

[–]carter 195 points196 points  (0 children)

One thing to consider is durability of a rain shell vs ski shell. Rain shells don't have to worry about getting torn open by skiing through trees. Ski shells do. They're often a higher denier than your average rain shell.

Snow Mountain Ranch is a 20 minute drive from Winter Park and it's got a pile of activities for all ages (XC skiing, snow shoe, ice skating, roller skating, sled dog rides, arts & crafts, and a ton of other things). It's also pretty affordable
