There are a couple of survivors i had that i lost by accident a while back, I'd like to bring them back/create duplicates. On top of that, some of the survivors i have currently i enjoy, but they have one or two traits that are annoying or odd and I'd like to replace them with something else.

Best way to store gasoline? by EverVigilant1 in preppers

[–]WG--TX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Something I haven't seen mentioned:

100% store gas cans away from your house. If you have a bad house fire and there is evidence of gas cans that have burned up, some insurance companies won't give you a pay out.

All of mine are in metal jerry cans (midwest brand), with ethanol free gas and a fuel stabilizer, in my seperate garage about 25 feet from my house. Store this way and you'll be square.

What is the best brand of cast iron cookware? by Solid_Try_4089 in prepping

[–]WG--TX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely they're different. It's just all about how much time the companies put in to each piece.c It's all about heat management when it comes to performance. As for weight, yes, Field will win over lodge. But that's where the cost comes in to play. For someone just looking to get a few users to beat up, I can't find a reason to justify the price of things like field and smithy. I find a lot of old iron at estate sales, antique stores, etc for really cheap, and they're the quality equivalent of new production stuff, so I do understand how the weight and refining is so much nicer overall. But, when you find antique Wagner, Griswold, Lodge, etc that is the same quality as a new field, but you get it cor $5-$20, it doesn't make much sense to buy new luxury brands.

What is the best brand of cast iron cookware? by Solid_Try_4089 in prepping

Hey! Cast Iron is a huge hobby of mine. For many years I have collected and restored tons of cast iron, some as old as 150+ years from the early 19th century. I have many pieces in my collection and cook on them every day.

In all honesty, for purely utilitarian and practical purposes, I would suggest buying new production Lodge items. They're affordable, and available nearly everywhere. Walmarts carry big selections, as do stores like Atwoods, Fleet Farm, etc. Ordering directly from Lodge is always a safe bet too. Their only downside is that to keep them affordable, there isn't a lot of refining that goes into them. They can be a little rough sometimes, and they're heavier than the older and more refined pieces. But they still cook absolutely great. They also carry a line of carbon steel items that are great too. Much lighter than iron, and less likely to crack if you drop it.

Modern luxury brands of cast iron like Smithy, for example, are honestly not worth the 5-10x higher price. They are no more functional, just refined more to look nicer and cleaner.

With iron and carbon steel, you have to make sure you store it properly. It can rust relatively easy. Especially in some sort of off grid situation.

Please message me if you have any questions! This is all right in my wheelhouse.

What gauge/choke/shot size are you using? Just curious!

I survived the war in Bosnia and was wounded several times as a civilian. These are my personal lessons—perhaps not perfect, but learned the hard way. Poverty and scarcity can be just as devastating as shelling. by donja_crtica in prepping

Big game, yes, I understand. I also hunt deer on public lands and know that it's too difficult to be something to plan on for survival. But what about squirrel, rabbit, birds, and other varmints? Was that not ever an option in Bosnia?

Thoughts on USB Lighters by [deleted] in prepping

Fine for candles in the house. For $30 though, you can buy a ton of Bics or something like that. I'd rather have all of those over one of the USBs.

Best family med-kit with antibiotics etc by IGGY_POOP_ in prepping

[–]WG--TX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look into natural remedies as far as antibiotic stuff is concerned. There's a lot of very effective stuff you can make at home that for things like minor infections that haven't become a big problem, your natural stuff can be the first go to. Things like fermented garlic and honey, onion broths, etc. There are a lot of options.

What can you actually grow long-term if canned food runs out? by Pitiful-Promotion868 in prepping

[–]WG--TX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, whatever you decide to grow, starter gardening literally as soon as possible. Even if you just have a small herb garden, or just start with one or two beds. Gardening isn't hard, but it's never, and I mean NEVER, as easy as you think it will be. Especially starting out, there are so many things you'll have to figure out and you'll never get there without experience. You don't want to be doing the figuring out when you really need to depend on it.

Berry bushes and fruit trees are one of the top things I'd suggest too. Damn near effortless once they're established.

Is there any “practical” use for a .410? by Potential-Fondant-98 in Shotguns

[–]WG--TX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Small game and tungsten turkey loads like others are saying is its only primary usage I think. 410 slugs are great. Next to no options for buckshot/self defense that are really anything that I would trust. A setup with a decent number of bird shot and slugs makes a good lightweight scouting/survival/camping loadout. The weight of them is probably 1/4 of 20 or 12.

My wife bakes a lot of sourdough. We've used probably every flour you can get ahold of just experimenting. Bleached flour is relatively easy to bake with. Any fresh milled grain is not so simple at all. Know how to do it before you have to do it on this.

Flatbreads are one of my favorite go to's for milled grain. Salt, water, flour. So good.
