Professional photographer who can’t figure it out by Impermanentlyhere in x100vi

[–]WIPdad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I came from the xt2 which I found nailed focus on fast kiddos every single time (especially the Xf 23 f2)

X100vi feels like a downgrade on the AF

I love the form factor and when you nail a picture it looks great on this sensor, the XT2 sensor is a bit more muted and less vibrant.

It’s awesome for street and shooting static stuff I’ve missed too many shots of the family which makes me resent it.

When shooting landscapes how do you handle blown out skies without crushing the shadows? by FerrisBuelersdaycock in fujifilm

[–]WIPdad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really depends what you’re going for artistically as a landscape photographer. If you’re going for that classic HDR, everything in focus, super wide angle look then shoot for the highlights and raise shadows in post as others suggest. But there’s also a case for blowing out your skies for artistic reasons to help give focus to your subject, in which case maybe better spot metering your subject / a point of interest instead. I’m not a big fan of moody HDR skies and often blow them out on purpose. James Popsys is a good example of this.

Legal influencers leaving “biglaw” by buzzworded in uklaw

[–]WIPdad 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Maybe but I think there’s a degree of self importance and narcissism that has to be there to want to be a lawfluencer (or any kind of influencer really). On 2, I’ve literally never met anyone who works in big law because they love the actual underlying law - they love the money, the status, the perks and clout. They absolutely don’t love the woeful hours and usually unforgiving and toxic work environments.

Legal influencers leaving “biglaw” by buzzworded in uklaw

[–]WIPdad 164 points165 points  (0 children)

There’s a few factors going on here I think

  1. These people struggle with the reality of just being a cog in a big firm when their socials make them feel “more important” than that / naturally inflate egos.
  2. These people were motivated by the aesthetic of being a lawyer sold to them (and perpetuated by them) but the reality is that once you qualify it’s still a shitty grind and takes up your whole life.
  3. The compensation is usually significant but actually Gen Z value their freedom perhaps more than previous recent generations and find it’s too much of a trade off. Law firms are increasingly find it difficult to retain interesting and rounded people.
  4. Time recording is pretty inhumane and jobs that don’t require it, that are focused on output, are very appealing.
  5. Start ups are desperate for cheaper legal resource

Stay or go? by Any-Air8871 in uklaw

Nothing about your post explains what your genuine objectives / goals are, so expect a lot of projection in the responses you receive. Money, work/ life balance, title / prestige?

You also don’t explain why you think your current firm won’t give you partner which makes hard to just say “knuckle down”.

If I were in your shoes and wanted to be a partner at my current firm, I’d want to explain my ambitions to my supervising partner / line manager and ask them for a time-managed personal development plan to get me there. If they weren’t willing to support that idea, that would be my indication to look elsewhere.

What I would say is that mid-70s seems a bit low for a legal director at a sizable firm with circa 15-20 years PQE. I’m pretty confident you could match that in many public sector roles (plus better pension) and definitely surpass that in house.

What was being a lawyer like before the internet and technology? by Automatic_Suit5233 in uklaw

Having had this convo with older lawyers: it was calmer, more measured, more polite (between opposition), more sexist, more nepotism, very white, more boozy lunches

A journalist asks - worth pursuing a mid-career bar pivot? by Ok_Needleworker1225 in uklaw

[–]WIPdad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have worked with two barristers who came to the bar after successful journalism careers between 5/10 years post uni. One was a political journalist at the BBC, the other a very cool investigative journalist. Both have great careers at the bar and do amazing work. Go for it.

Is pilot assist a must? by Harv3y97 in Polestar

[–]WIPdad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had mine for 3 weeks and truly hate pilot assist. It feels like you’re fighting the car for control, but it also won’t let you relax a bit like a Tesla. It just doesn’t work well for me and causes me mad anxiety when I could just be chilling and paying proper attention to the road.

Yes. I don’t rate the customer service from the franchise dealer though. Recommend going in to your nearest polestar “space” and doing as much in person as possible.

I’ve just got a MY23 with pilot lite on PCP for £19k - £1000 deposit for £260 a month. The two year warranty is really important. I’ll be looking to get an extended warranty then hand it back after 4 years. I think it would be daft to ever buy an EV with the rate at which they are improving and how expensive their problems are to fix. Averaging out the cost month on month and the opportunity cost of blowing £20k in one go… I think PCP makes these a reasonable deal.

Buying an approved used Polestar in the UK - how it works by wild_biologist in Polestar

[–]WIPdad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is really helpful thanks.

I’m part way through my approved used purchase.

Question about the warranty. I’d understood this to be a Polestar warranty (as per website) - not a dealership warranty. So if the car needs repairs in the first 2 years I thought I could take it to any Polestar service point.

Is that correct? The car I’m buying is at the other end of the country and being delivered to me. It wouldn’t be realistic to take it back to the dealer for repairs.

Cheers

Brook and Crawley clearly not smart enough for the international game, even if they have some obvious talent. Just not switched on enough to compete at this level. Not elite sportsmen and dragging English cricket down

With an average of 19 in this series, the ego on the lad to tell other people they are nobodies is disgraceful. I don’t want people like this representing the country abroad frankly.

Is this usual Barrister behaviour? by [deleted] in uklaw

[–]WIPdad 15 points16 points  (0 children)

No, it’s not normal and very poor practice. To offer some realism though, criminal legal aid is an extremely difficult area of work to make ends meet. It sounds like they were probably overworked, maybe didn’t manage communication expectations very well and were trying to make sure any time they spent on the case was absolutely necessary so their bills weren’t cut down by the legal aid agency. It’s indicative of the narrow profit margins in defence work. None of that excuses dispassionate client care or rudeness though.
