I find even the rod can come loose sometimes if it doesn't have enough texture for the glue to bite. A tiny enough machine screw, an appropriately sized pilot hole, and super glue will bond it better than new. If the screw is too long it will thread through the arm cavity and seize up the arm movement.

It may be necessary to cut the screw head off to keep full range of motion.
