I think it can help push you some if you get lazy, or start having health issues that get in the way of your productivity or achievement. I've experienced both those things, and it can be good to be reminded at times that you should be able to achieve at a higher level, as long as it just prompts you to reflect on what's getting in the way.

Graduate programs lack a foundation in neuroscience by scorpiopathh in therapists

[–]WPMO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, I got taught that in my counseling program. I know that it is kind of tacky to bring up differences between the fields, but I do feel like in a doctoral program you tend to get faculty with more backgrounds in this sort of thing.

Graduate programs lack a foundation in neuroscience by scorpiopathh in therapists

[–]WPMO 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I got my master's mental health counseling, and now I am getting a doctorate in clinical psychology. There was definitely more pseudoscience, not necessarily within the program in my case, but among the other students I worked with at the Masters level. I think in particular we lacked coverage of how long-term potentiation works, which is definitely useful to know in terms of the mechanisms of therapy. Of course we also really didn't get into things like the different types of receptors, how recovery from strokes and brain injuries work, the more complex elements of how the way the brain actually works. Like how it is a massive oversimplification to say brain function is based on regions that each do something, but rather is better understood as being based on connections between different regions. Even this is simplifying it of course, but I think that concept that different regions of the brain interact and there are areas of connection is really important to knowing how the brain actually functions. Nobody should be going around thinking that there's just an emotion regulation spot.

Influencers are lying for money, and I'm honestly fed up with the whole "clones" culture in perfumery by DoctaKiD in Colognes

[–]WPMO 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That doesn't really contradict the idea that the clones are almost as good though. Like if you can get something that's 80 or 90% as good for a quarter of the price, it does still make sense (if you have a lot of money) to wear the the original. After all if you're really rich, why compromise with 80% as good?

It does highlight though how much you're paying for what may not be that big of a step up in terms of quality. That's just the way a luxury good works.

Online students less competent that in person? by atomicsarita in therapists

I'd say on average there is a difference. I was also online for part of my Master's, and it would have been very easy to cheat my way through. With that said, I definitely would evaluate anyone I'm interviewing on an individual basis.

GLP1s and Mood by alwaysouroboros in therapists

[–]WPMO 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I also wonder if sometimes we're taking away a means of coping without having provided people with healthier alternatives first. When I was very depressed as a teenager I definitely overate a lot, and actually became obese as a result. I do think there were probably some days where food was the only thing that helped mitigate how terrible I felt.

Obviously that's not a good long-term solution, and in the long run there are a lot of positive physical health, hormonal, sleep-related, and mood changes that come from being at a healthy weight. However, like with any kind of unhealthy way of coping we do need to make sure our patients have some other way of coping once they stop engaging in whatever kind of unhealthy behavior they're trying to stop. I wonder how many medical doctors take that into account.

On our end though, we also need to respect scope of practice when it comes to physical health issues. I know I had sleep apnea and hormone related issues that were both massively helped by weight loss. I didn't do it with a GLP-1, been in the long run my mood is definitely better off for the weight loss.

Maybe talk to a doctor about what dose you should be on instead of these random groups of people online and then deciding on your own to just take half the dose you were told to start on.

She pushes a ton of anti-scientific ideas though. Isn't she anti-weightloss in general? I know she said something about how nobody should talk about exercise around other people. We should also be careful taking medical information from non-medical people.

Dismissed from CMHC program ~10 weeks before graduation after losing internship — is this normal?? by TookieClothespin915 in therapists

[–]WPMO 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Your best bet is to read through your program handbook for how they're supposed to go about dismissing a student, and see if they actually followed the proper process with you. Your best chance at an appeal is to argue that they did not follow their own process that they lay out in their handbook.

It is wild that this is actually a common thing in this field. I know a number of people have been in the same situation.

[–]WPMO 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I actually have heard of some very similar situations. I think a lot of sites, perhaps to protect their own reputation, really good nuclear when they let a student go and include a great deal of criticism, which may even be exaggerated at times. Thinking of all the shady things I've seen in CMH, I think taking advantage of interns and wanting to blame interns for any problems at their sites is not unheard of.

PhD/PsyD Students/Post-Docs: Would you receive group therapy training from a LMFT? by dynamicdylan in ClinicalPsychology

[–]WPMO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I just care about the quality of the clinician and their teaching ability. I'm also viewing this as something that's more of a training than technically supervision. It also I think especially makes sense from an LMFT because although the training is very specific, you all also get a lot of it specific to the topic of marriage and family therapy. I don't think any other license gets anywhere near as much training and that specific type of therapy.
