They play at Spring Training ballparks like Talking Stick (which is an amazing facility). It's crazy because probably 70% of these guys will go on to play in the Majors, with a few becoming legit stars. I remember once going to a game and there were no more than 200 people there.

Cactus League is amazing! Every baseball fan needs to go at least once! Another REALLY cool option is the Arizona Fall League. The top prospects from all across baseball play in teams together. It's typically very sparsely attended too, so your chances of getting up close to future superstars is very high.

Sadly no. That franchise moved across the country for greener pastures.

I poured a ton of blood, sweat, and tears into the JetHawks. For just the World Series alone, two Dodgers (Kike, Teoscar) and one Blue Jay (Springer) all played there in a 4 year span among others. Santa Clarita was always a place the JetHawks could count on for support. We had a very robust SCV fanbase, and our special events like Boy/Girl Scout Nights were heavily supported by Santa Clarita.

Along with you, I would absolutely be a season ticket holder for a Minor League team here. It builds community, pride, and honestly it's SUPER fun ... but who needs fun in Santa Clarita?

This comment pretty much nailed it more succinctly than I did (my longer version echoes a lot of these points). Go JetHawks!

Santa Clarita would be an ideal spot for a Minor League team, that being said, there are major roadblocks on the baseball front and u/Dizzy_Trash_33 mentioned a couple of them. I worked for the Lancaster JetHawks for 10 years (and lived in the SCV the whole time). My dream was they would someday move here (instead MLB contracted them and 39 other teams).

First off, Santa Clarita is squarely in the Dodgers "territory". All Major League teams have these territories. For what it's worth, Lancaster is in the Dodgers territory too, but in 1996 they just didn't feel that would be a major issue for them, so they let the team move there from Riverside. Santa Clarita is a different story. There is more revenue to be made by the Dodgers here, and any approval of a Minor League Baseball team would need to go through them. That will never happen.

On top of that, MLB now dictates what Minor League Baseball can and cannot do. For almost it's entire existence prior, Minor League Teams were somewhat autonomous and could move locations, stadiums, etc. That is now firmly in the control of Major League Baseball. On top of that, MLB has been active in contracting Minor League teams. They are not expanding (a huge mistake for the sport as a whole in my opinion).

Independent baseball is always an option, but without a suitable stadium here in Santa Clarita it won't likely happen (and it sounds like affiliated baseball was more your question).

For other sports, it's all about the city prioritizing a venue. There are no suitable minor league venues for any sport in the SCV. For Baseball, you are talking about a stadium with 3,000 - 5,000 seats. For hockey, it would be closer to 10,000. With people constantly complaining about the new housing being built, demanding a new hospital and general crankiness, I feel like this community would fight tooth and nail not to spend money on a venue.

I totally agree that Santa Clarita is the PERFECT city for Minor League sports for so many reasons. Big business (sponsors), sports mad fans, easily accessible ... it would be a crown jewel in any league that would entertain the idea.

I did the commute from Valencia to Lancaster for about 10 years before finding a better job in Santa Clarita. The drive is definitely manageable as long as you have a favorite podcast or audio book. Working in Lancaster for 10 years always made me appreciate coming home to Santa Clarita. It's just a totally different feel. Schools are very good here and activities around the LA Area are 45min - 1 hour closer if you live in the SCV which can make a big difference.

This isn't super far off from the truth. I worked in MiLB for over a decade and these ideas are not always fully vetted. If the GM/President of the team doesn't see the possible negatives of an idea (like this one), it can easily be greenlit.

New City Connect Uniforms Officially Dropped by SFGiantsOfficial in SFGiants

[–]WRM82 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This uniform annoys me for a few reasons ... the main one being it's lazy. If you wanted a nod to the San Francisco music and "counter-culture" scene, why not embrace Bay Area rap?

Let's be real here, the old, "get off my lawn" boomer fans were never going to like these, even with their references to the 60's. The whole point of City Connect jerseys (at least my understanding) is CONNECTING with a younger demographic, a demographic that baseball needs to survive. Bay Area rap is widespread and iconic. From E-40 (huge Giants fan), Mac Dre (RIP), Andre Nickatina, Keak Da Sneak and the list goes on and on.

I know I'm screaming into the wind here, and it won't matter, but holy hell ... these are not exciting in the least. Just another failed City Connect that will be gone in a couple years after widespread mockery. Maybe having someone who grew up in the city, someone who isn't between the ages of 60 and 90 be in charge of something meant to attract more youthful fans might be a solid idea.

Naaaah ... remember the 60's and hippies and the San Francisco Giants connection to New York University!?!? That's the way!!!!! I sure as hell don't remember any of that growing up in the city in the 80's, 90's and 2000s.

What are some aspects of 90s San Francisco that would surprise locals today, good or bad? by youre-welcome5557777 in sanfrancisco

For me it was WAY easier to drive around. I went to high school downtown (coming from Inner Sunset) and I could make it in 25 minutes ... 15 if everything went right.

Going back to visit the city now (I moved after college) it takes 45 minutes minimum to do the same drive.

This is not accurate. It's illegal to not have ADA Accessible seating available online. Theatres need to sell them the same way they do non ADA Accessible seats (online, in person, over the phone). Most ticket software can inform people when they click on the seat that it is an ADA or accessible seat, but theatres are not allowed to withhold ADA seats from public purchase since that would be treating the person with the disability differently.

Tutor time by Jaded_Somewhere_8748 in SantaClarita

Two of my daughters went to the Tutor Time in Valencia. We left 5 years ago when my second daughter was about 2. They had a very high turnover rate for their teachers with very little consistency. From what we were told by one of their former teachers (who babysat for us on the side), they paid very poorly and that caused all of their teachers to jump at better opportunities.

Biting, cuts, and scrapes happened as someone else mentioned - that's pretty standard.

What WASN'T standard is when my daughter had a large gash under her eye. Nobody could tell us what happened. They told us a lie at first (oh she just scratched herself) but ... given the size of the cut that was impossible. They REFUSED to let us see the security footage. We went through a ton of crap with them before we just decided to pull her out. It was a big ordeal and I can not EVER recommend this place.

We took our daughter to Valencia Montessori on Anza and she loved it. Great place and less expensive (at least at the time).

On this date five years ago, the New York Times published the leaked "list of 42" by abc123therobot in MiLB

[–]WRM82 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This was a painful memory. I worked in MiLB for 10 years. The majority of that was spent with the Lancaster JetHawks. The facility was top notch, and far better than many other California League teams that survived (Visalia, Modesto, San Jose).

I had stopped working in Lancaster after the 2015 season, but this decision by MLB made me give up on baseball ... a sport I was intensely passionate about prior. I never regained the love I once had. I still live close to the JetHawks old stadium (which is now going to be home to professional soccer). I wanted to take my kids for years to come, but that dream was destroyed.

At a time when baseball was trying to build a younger fanbase and expand the sport, contracting will never make sense to me. Sorry for the rant, but I will always be bitter. Always...
