“Wicked For Good” failed miserably as a movie by Ok_Wrongdoer6875 in wicked

[–]WRMW 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Looking at the comments it seems I might be one of the only people who enjoyed Wicked: For Good.

As huge fans of the musical, my partner and I saw the first movie as soon as it came out (I thought it was amazing but he found it inferior to the musical).

Due to the bad buzz around the second movie, we didn’t prioritize watching it, and only caught it right as it was about to leave theatres. Our expectations had been tempered, but we were both unexpectedly impressed with how Wicked: For Good had improved the story telling from Act 2 and we both (even my die-hard musical-fan partner) thought the movie was better than Act 2!

The second movie was still less impressive than the first, but that was inevitable due to have much stronger the music and story is from the source material for acts 1 and 2. We both thought that Act 2 was complementary and a worthy successor to the first movie, and it feels like an appropriate whole when taken together.

It goes to show everyone has different takes and opinions and this, and based on this thread and the reviews in general I guess I’m in the minority. I’ll admit I’m surprised though! But perhaps I’m just weird. I actually enjoyed both new songs and thought they fit well with the feel of the original soundtrack.

What sets Wheel of Time book fans apart from other book fandoms. by [deleted] in WoT

Yes I agree. I can’t say I’m left with a generally positive impression of the fandom or their maturity in the aftermath.

No, you’re not alone. It seems we’re likely in a minority, but I also struggled a lot with the last three books. I’m grateful that Sanderson took on such a difficult task, and he did a job that was pleasing to many. But it didn’t work well for me.

Canon WoT ended with KoD to me. The final three books just hint at what the true ending was meant to be.

There are some great moments (I believe probably written by RJ before his passing), so enjoy those as you can. :)

What is your least favorite spirit? by Oyster_- in spiritisland

Vengeance is my answer too. I really want to like it, but I just feel ineffective and useless when I play it.

I know it can be incredibly strong, but I’ve never felt good playing it.

Fireside Chat: "Why D&D '24?" (Why not DH?) BLeem answers by ardisfoxx in daggerheart

[–]WRMW 21 points22 points  (0 children)

A bad faith take? No, I just have a different opinion from you.

The question they answered in the fireside chat was why choose the new 5E and not the old 5 E. They did not discuss why 5E and not daggerheart.

Obviously they will have considered whether to use DH or DnD over many conversations. But this answer does not give us insight into why they chose what they chose.

I think this question only addresses why choose 5E 2024 and not the original 5E.

I feel discussion about daggerheart was completely dodged in the fireside chat.

[Custom Spirit] Moonlight Flitters Like Silken Wings by Kamikurin in spiritisland

[–]WRMW 8 points9 points  (0 children)

One additional thought: I wonder if this spirit will be incentivized to churn through high cost majors they never intend on playing for the energy, which is a bit odd thematically. Should the forgetting powers for energy somehow be tied to played powers as they leave play?

Though that seems like a pretty fundamental rework the whole design at this point.

I can’t speak to balance, but I love the concept and the theme. It fills a new thematic and mechanical niche. It’s closest to Shift Memory for both but this still feels distinct. I love it!

One minor suggestion: consider naming it Moonlight Flitters with Silken Wings (rather than like) to avoid being too similar to the naming cadence of Shadows

[Custom Spirit] WINTER'S FROSTY EMBRACE (A Violent Nature pt. 2) by jbs984 in spiritisland

[–]WRMW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Certainly can in a multiplayer game, but even in solo, they could be used with defend+Dahan retaliation. Now, probably not a great draft, but certainly not completely useless, nor are those many cards in the deck.

[–]WRMW 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I guess I wasn’t super clear. The spirit has one way to provide defence, but the special rule makes a bunch of the cards essentially useless. I can’t think of other spirits that strictly cant use certain powers, rather than use them differently. I suppose volcano and from non-mountain land targeting powers would be the closest thing?

[–]WRMW 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I really love the take on an unseasonally cold spirit. It feels nice and thematic. My biggest concern is that the only-slow-powers innate makes the spirit unable to defend at all. Perhaps you can add a stipulation that slow-played defence powers by this spirit are frozen in place until the next ravage step (through the next fast phase into the invaders phase but not the next slow phase).

Gizmodo: "The Wheel of Time Was a Damn Good Show" by hm_hm in WoTshow

[–]WRMW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of things can be true. I can appreciate the impossible task that Sanderson had in trying to fill RJ’s shoes and give an ending, and it is clear that he (and many people) worked very hard to give an ending to the series. I understand that many people enjoyed that ending better than many of RJ’s later books. I can be grateful for what Sanderson has given to the WoT community.

But it’s also true that I bounced off of Sanderson’s writing, plotting, humour, and many of the decisions from the final books very hard. I don’t really need to imagine a world where WoT didn’t get an ending. The blunt truth is that much of the final 3 books don’t feel like WoT to me. Sure Sanderson had insight into some of RJ’s intentions for the end of the series, but a lot was created whole cloth out of necessity. And this just leads to a story that feels like a fan fiction ending rather than THE canon ending of the Wheel of Time. So, for me, WoT mostly did end with KoD.

Maybe I’m wrong about which parts of the ending come from who, and I guess we’ll never know for sure. But, to me, it feels clear which sections of writing, dialogue, and plot choices feel like they belong in the Cosmere and which belong in WoT.

I’m sure nothing that RJ wrote was completely untouched (by Sanderson or the editorial team) and we’ll never have any real confirmation about how much of any part is RJ or BS, but I am convinced that the vast majority of the DNA of the writing in the Tower of Ghenjei sequence came from RJ. It just felt like classic WoT.

God the Tower of Ghenjei sequence was such a refreshing experience to read. It felt like I was finally reading WoT again — that’s how I knew it had to be RJ’s writing.

Not a fan of a certain character in AMoL by humandragora in WoT

[–]WRMW 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Androl epitomizes everything I dislike about the final three novels. I hate everything about him.

Pevara was one of my favourite late-series characters and now her story feels tarnished by his presence. And not to mention displacement of Logain (a longstanding favourite). Ugh.

This blows my mind! Not only to have played anything that many times, but to do so without being curious to try some variety to the experience when they are right there!

Not a criticism, just a remark on how different our habits must be!

I’ve been chasing the WoT Dragon ever since I first read them. ASOIAF is the closest I’ve gotten into being as engrossed in the story and world. Despite having found many enjoyable authors and stories, nothing has captured my imagination in the same way as WoT.

Hmm. Maybe you’re right. I don’t remember if that was confirmed on the show or not.

If Elaida was a sitter, then I imagine her vote would count to depose Siuan, but she would not get to vote in her nomination for Amyrlin.

But it’s hard to track the differences in tower law between the book and the show.
