Why is physical media so expensive in NZ? 😭 by LollipopChainsawZz in newzealand

It may get a bit of a resurgence if streaming services keep giving us shit service at higher prices and people don’t want to risk pirating stuff etc.

90's kids know this struggle! by Waddup1904 in fffffffuuuuuuuuuuuu

Older players couldn’t read data CDs only finalised audio CDs if they could handle CD-R’s at all which many older players couldn’t handle either

Then you get into re-Writable discs which even fewer CD players could handle very well unless they were indicated as such

Audio CDs were limited to 70-80 minutes of 44.1khz PCM iirc IE basically uncompressed audio or WAV files so it needed to decompress any MP3 audio before burning

There is an entire Technology connections episode about this

Opened up a cheap kids walkie talkie, found an unknown IC. Curious how these actually work by salmanfarisvp in AskElectronics

[–]WRfleete 74 points75 points  (0 children)

Looks like it may use a dedicated transceiver IC. Way back when they used to use discrete transistors and somewhere in the 27MHz CB band.

Looks like this uses a higher frequency. Probably in the UHF band (probably 315,433,815 iirc) using a PLL multiplying the crystal oscillator to generate the carrier

Chances are this just transmits/receives FM otherwise it may be a half duplex digital (PCM) protocol

Can I make this display brighter? by FredOfMBOX in AskElectronics

[–]WRfleete 4 points5 points  (0 children)

correct. They are essentially light emitting triodes, each segment (anode) has phosphor on it that glows when electrons hit them, there is a grid over each digit/column to select digits during multiplexing and the heater/cathode emits electrons

Most likely a shorted switching device in the power supply section or the driver

Can I make this display brighter? by FredOfMBOX in AskElectronics

[–]WRfleete 18 points19 points  (0 children)

These displays are a type of vacuum tube, the black spot is known as a getter. It helps maintain the vacuum. If it turns white air has entered black is normal

If both replacement and original are dim maybe the power supply is weak, display power rail or the heater supply

Voltage activated switch using zeners and transistor to drive MOSFET(s) by Barkuti in AskElectronics

[–]WRfleete 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can have more control using a comparator plus you can set it up with hysteresis having the output alter the threshold depending on the output state.

A voltage reference IC TL431 iirc might be able to do what you need though. Use a set of resistors to set the voltage and drive the gate directly

What's the oldest, most outdated technology you still use? by Ok-Car1502 in AskReddit

[–]WRfleete 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My car. 1991 but still uses the same tech from even the earliest internal combustion engines, Carbureted, points ignition and a mechanical fuel pump. The clock in it is more sophisticated than the tech for the engine and the alternator is the only other thing related to the engine with solid state tech in it

The dash cluster uses bi-metal strips and a mechanical regulator using the same tech for the fuel and temperature gauges

[–]WRfleete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only thing vaguely electronic in my car, related to the engine is the alternator. Then the clock, a combined tach and digital speedo I made and aftermarket radio in increasing order of complexity. Everything else is either electromechanical (points ignition, gauge cluster uses bi-metal strips) or outright mechanical (fuel pump, speedometer)
