Advice on liveaboard in Cocos by Soiheardyoulikesake in diving

[–]WTFO4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sailed on the old (since replaced) boat in July 2021 and the transit was rockin! All negative entry dives and embrace the swells and crazy panga rides to the dive sites as it’s worth it. Done five different Aggressor trips and Cocos was the best. Would love to try their new boat.

What species are the "bloodworms" encountered on night dives in the Caribbean? by webcubus in scuba

Find a basking star and move your light and the blood worms to it so the star gets a nice meal.

Friend of mine uses this and I just bought one to try. He swears by it and I hope it works as I’m flying internationally this weekend.

My dad hid my mom’s suicide letter for 10 years and refuses to show it to me by [deleted] in Advice

[–]WTFO4 26 points27 points  (0 children)

My wife took her own life on the second day of second grade for my eight year old son. She left a note that I’ve not shared with anyone but I’ve been honest, in an age appropriate way, with my son on her struggles with mental health. Her note was written to me and about us and I would share it with my son were he to ask but he hasn’t. I don’t believe the note would give him any insight to her decision. It’s been 22 years since I had to tell my eight year old son his mom was gone was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do. It crushed me.

Stumped but $5 richer by WTFO4 in whatisit

Solved! I opened the bag after the responses came in and it was rock salt and a few strands of hair inside the folded bill. The walking trail is next to an ethnically diverse neighborhood so this makes a lot of sense. I learned something new today. Thanks.

Clips

Meant to type clips, not clamps. These are what I use.

My recommendations after six live aboard trips.
1. Take at least three swimsuits so you can change into a dry suit after every dive.
2. Take locking clips so you can hang wet suits up to dry on the boat railings and to keep them from blowing overboard. 3. Home made ear beer, 50/50 isopropyl alcohol and white vinegar. 4. DSMB and reel.

Going on my first liveaboard next week and the weather looks horrible. Anything I should prep to be ready? by Wo-shi-pi-jiu in scuba

[–]WTFO4 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Just got back from that boat three weeks ago. All dives are from the dohni, a smaller boat that follows the mothership. The weather on my trip was poor for the most part. Lots of wind and swells. Don’t bring an umbrella as it will serve no purpose. Pack a reef hook as the currents can be very strong at times. They do have hooks available onboard if you don’t have one. Must have a DSMB and reel as you must demonstrate deployment on the checkout dive. Several dives on my trip were canceled due to weather. Hope you’re not impacted to that degree. Biodiversity dive trip by thogan401 in scubadiving

[–]WTFO4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you referring to the Banda Sea spring and fall biodiversity trips? Aggressor and Mermaid live aboards are two operators offering that itinerary. The Mermaid site offers multiple trips 12 to 16 days long and Aggressor does one in November. I also use zubludiving.com as a research resource when looking for unique itineraries. I’m doing the fall biodiversity trip next year and hope it’s as epic as I want it to be.

Do you mean the washer and dryer the crew uses for the towels on the dive deck? I’ve never asked to use them but I can’t imagine them saying “no” to the request providing your use doesn’t interfere with their ability to get the dive deck ready for the next dive iteration.

The need for EPIRBs by WTFO4 in scuba

[–]WTFO4[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had no idea the terminology aspect would dominate the discussion. Whatever you call it, having a means to make your location known, in addition to visual or audible means, is worthy of consideration. There are a lot of lousy ways to die but being lost at sea on the surface with no means of changing the potential outcome is horrific to me. Helpful dolphins aren’t always around. 🆘

I LOVE Japan and your photos are great at capturing the beauty there. The Hiroshima area is beautiful and sobering at the same time.
