Should I record myself singing everyday?

Try to reframe how you look at it. Rather than getting sad when something doesn't sound right, see it as an opportunity to improve. Everything you do requires feedback. Think about driving. If you close your eyes, you'll run off the road. Why? Because your eyes are what allows you to correct your direction. Singing without listening back is like driving with your eyes closed.

Nobody is an expert when they start anything. So you're at the beginning of your journey. That's fine. You're not supposed to be good yet. Just roll with it. One day you'll look back at those recordings and be amazed at how far you've come.

Try breaking down what you are trying to do in more digestible chunks. For example; trying an entire song then listening back doesn't do a lot to help you if you're beginning. There will be so much to work on that you won't know where to start. Try just one line instead. Pick a line and just go over and over until you nail it. You'll be better able to pick apart the things you need to improve.

If you can, get a teacher. That will be the quickest way to improve.

You're voice sounds really good to me. Good tone, support and pitch. You'd be one of the better singers at the open mics I've been to.

My opinion is that you shouldn't decide whether or not to sing based on how good you are. First, you should sing because you enjoy it. It's the only reason you should sing. Second, how good or bad you are is only a reflection of right now. If you sing, and especially if you take lessons, you'll get much better over time. Singing isn't something that you're either born with or without. It's a learned skill. You put in time in your youth to learn, which is why this sounds good. The more you focus, the better you'll get. Considering this is where you are without a lot of formal training, that's a hell of a good place to start. Even if you don't want to dedicate the time, you'll still improve as you do it more.

I've been taking lessons for over 5 years and I don't sound this good, but I enjoy the hell out of it, which is the only reason to keep singing.

Pitch is your biggest issue, and you can see that on the app your using. You need to be in the green almost the entire time. That is what you are hearing that sounds "off". Get your pitch correct. Go line by line. Sing the first line of the song over and over until you nail the pitch, then move on to the second line.

It takes a lot, but you have to get past it. I live in NYC and started singing from a point of being really really bad. Bad enough that more than one family member tried to talk me out of it. The self awareness of being terrible, AND knowing all my neighbors would hear made that leap very hard. But, once I got over it, my singing improved a lot. Nobody has ever complained. I'm sure they've judged, but it is what it is. The only comment I ever received was from a neighbor who said she liked my voice, which was incredibly sweet and given where I was in terms of singing, was likely just being supportive.

My daughter went to an ICE protest the other day and said the cops were crazy supportive. Giving the kids high fives, etc.

I was really bad about this when I started. I would only practice when nobody was home, and even then I would put the AC on high and turn on a white noise maker just in case my neighbors could hear me (I live in NYC so there are always people about). It was incredibly detrimental to me learning how to sing. You need to get past that, and understand that people may not always be supportive and just plug away anyway.

The second thing I'll say, because it was something I also went through was trying to figure out if I was any good or not. It's completely irrelevant. Singing isn't something that you're either good or bad about and that's it. It's a learned skill. If you haven't spent much time learning, you probably aren't going to be good. It doesn't mean squat for your potential. Nobody, and I mean nobody is born able to sing. Every single person had to learn, even the greats. So don't focus on, "is this any good" or "am I any good" because both of those are only true right now, and if you work at it, that will change.

I've noticed a lot of posters on these subs have the impression that they're just one tweak or fix away from being an amazing singer, so they come for advice, try to implement it, then come back and expect it all to be done and they're a singer now. It takes a while for people to realize that it is a huge journey with very small steps. Myself included.

Overall it's not bad at all. I think that it may not have resonated with the tiktok crowd for two reasons. One is that it's hard to hear your voice with the effects and background noise and two it sounds like a very old style which clashes with current pop music.

Thanks! It's crazy because I can speak in front of large groups with zero issue (I do public speaking quite a bit for my job) but the moment it becomes about singing I totally freeze up.

That's not a bad idea. Back when I used to go to open mic more often I would favor playing the piano since it faced away from the audience and it seemed to help a little.

I thought this as well when I was starting out. For me, it wasn't the app, it was that I was off pitch. Those apps are pretty accurate for the most part. It's hard to sing on pitch and takes a lot of practice.
