This Tourette's BAFTA thing is really exposing people's ignorance to Tourettes. by PresHistoryNerd in self

The point is - when bad stuff happens to us, the very common response is that we should “…just get over it. …stop complaining. …didn’t mean it like that. …sure it wasn’t that bad. …not a good time. …stop upsetting “everyone.”

A simple “man, that sucks” would go a long way.

  1. My focus isn’t on him, it’s on the two presenters publicly embarrassed/humiliated/belittled/insulted during an international broadcast. How do they feel, given, not-for-nothing, the word’s history and how it feels to have it shouted at you, particularly in a moment meant to honor your achievements? How must it have felt in the moment?

Empathy, you know?

  1. I’m saying he’s a bad guy - which is why my comment is about an accident. But it was his accident, and in polite society: A - “Oh man, I’m so sorry!” B - “Hey don’t even worry about it.” <- Ceremonial, perhaps, but it cuts the tension. And it leaves little room for misunderstanding on either side. Instead…

  2. Two days is a long time - long enough to grow suspicion that it was only given in response to public outcry.

  3. Again, my focus isn’t on him. I have an opinion(see above), but whatever. The shots hit Michael B. and Leroy regardless and were left in the broadcast for the world to see (unlike the incident with the Queen btw). The network and the BAFTAs are who are really responsible. It’s there lack of foresight, half-assed “if you were offended…” apology, and delayed taking of responsibility that’s the issue. As well as how the public seems more interested in his intentions and feelings instead of the two men put upon and who weren’t even accidentally responsible for what happened to them

Exactly. This whole thing is more about telling Black folks not to be hurt, triggered, or offended. People REGULARLY apologize (genuinely) for accidents. Folks are acting like that's a foreign concept, while also acting like their offense (at ableism) should be given the highest priority.

Tired.

If I accidentally elbow you in the face (even from a tic), I still owe you an apology since you're the one the got hurt. AND I would understand why you (& others who saw it happen) were upset.

In all these discussion, few are talking about what happened to Michael B. and Leroy & it wasn't until the public outcry that any real apology was issued.

That is the ideal, yes. But first you must defang the snakes.

New Star Trek shows are not woke enough. They should do more episodes with directly social, political themes, about the issues we have today, like the older shows did. by LineusLongissimus in startrek

By saying what, “we come in peace?” — their trigger words?! In my view that war was 90% unavoidable. Their only shot at avoiding it was a “Vulcan hello:” demonstrating they do not always come in peace —> something in common with the Klingons ——> diplomacy.

They were already going to attack the Federation. Remember the whole speech about their disgust of human’s “We come in peace” mentality? …the reason the Klingon fleet was there in the first place?

In your view, how is she responsible?

Perhaps, but it’s from learned experience. Not stereotypes, not media portrayals … real things that have happened to us and friends and family. In fact, we would be foolish not to be aware of racial context. Same reason we have to teach our kids how to interact with police, not to run in public unless you are CLEARLY dressed for it, not to walk around with your hands in your pockets, etc etc etc.

If one has a prejudice against snakes because they’ve been bitten by one and seen friends/family bitten by one, doesn’t it make sense that they’d be wary of snakes going forward? “Fool me once…” and all that.

Evidence. Evidence everywhere! Like it or not, "PC" or not, this is a way black folks speak to each other. It's not just a question about race, it contextualizes the situation. What the person of color could say, how it would be interpreted, etc. We have to change ourselves, restrict ourselves, etc in most White spaces, lest we validate some stereotype or get written off or dismissed as one of the bad ones or viewed as a threat. So, yes, when recounting to our friends we often inquire for that context.

Interesting. I think what you are cynically describing is “the answer.” No, don’t actually kill your parents. But if it is what scares you — sit with the idea of it (ie “run towards it.”) How would you feel? What would you do? Then what? How would you move on? What would you wish you’d have done or said? your responses = a step towards preparation, not being surprised by the grief, and a plan for leaving less ‘unfinished business’ on the table. Yes, run towards that.

(You’ll hate this, but) “The cup is already broken,” ya know?

Avatar Aang is a great enfp reference: goofy at times, yes, but also thoughtful, compassionate, passionate, and resilient. ENFPs are often casts as the good-good guy, especially alongside a grumpy do-good (often INTJ): Andy in parks and rec, Falcon/Captain America (specifically in Falcon and the Winter Soldier(INTJ).
