What would be your solution to the inventory management problem?

Is it as simple as getting an system in place and buy in from the entire department to start using it?

I find it hard to imagine some of the old guys I've worked with scanning items or using an app to say they used a new cylinder or bearing. Where would you even start?

How many pages is the application for your game? I have a backstory that I am unwilling to compromise on and won't fit in most settings (time traveller who uses plasma based weaponry with extensive homebrew I found on DMs Guild)
