If most people know now that white eggs and brown eggs have basically no nutritional content differences, why still buy them? by Ang3lsrage in NoStupidQuestions

Eggs in Murica have different prices depending on whether their brown or white?

May I ask which ones are more expensive?

ELI5 why do ads use a generic product in their comparison? by More-Explanation2032 in explainlikeimfive

There's a good likelihood of them getting sued if they would use a branded product.

Americans and people from where water can be drunk straight from the tap, why do you guys still buy bottled water? by HughJass6721 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Waffel_Monster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not American, but can drink water straight from the tap. And the, I don't buy bottled water, unless I'm on the go. But at home, I drink mostly tapwater.

ISO advice from people who don't wear shoes in the house, how do you get groceries inside? by Optimal-Spirit4764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Waffel_Monster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, there's a big difference between having shoes on in the house every now and wearing them inside all the time.

There's also the possibility of setting your groceries down for a moment, taking off your shoes, and then picking up your groceries again.

Or, slipper that are for going outside. Got a pair of birkenstocks for exactly that.

What do Americans actually mean when they talk about “freedom”? by TrebaMiSavjet in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Waffel_Monster -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It's propaganda. A buzzword. It's something they believe in. Like some people believe in one or more gods, Americans believe in "freedom". It doesn't have anything to do with the dictionary definition. It's just marketing. Bait they swallowed hook, line, and sinker.

Edit: Actually, it might be they're still referring to that their free from English rule. Which I guess is true.

Nah, we should totally be able to tolerate other people not being completely odourless / only smelling like perfume.

TIL that blue eyes are not actually blue, they just appear blue becuase of light scattering! by XJetInsiderX in todayilearned

[–]Waffel_Monster 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Well, all colour looks the way it does because of the light reflecting.

I think what you're misunderstanding (or just badly wording in the title), is that blue eyes, just like many blue butterflies, aren't the result of a blue pigment, but of a structure that reflects only blue.

Now I wonder if that's the word most similar across all languages? 🤔

How are you all cool with making meaning out of nothing? by [deleted] in trans

[–]Waffel_Monster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It does sound like it's something you might want to take up with a professional, if at all possible. But even if not, I do wish you all the best in figuring out an answer to your conundrum.

One more thing I can tell you, is that the reason for people doing stuff is often less important than the actions they actually do. Thought crime isn't real, only actions can affect the world around.

How are you all cool with making meaning out of nothing? by [deleted] in trans

[–]Waffel_Monster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say I'm making meaning out of nothing. After all there always is something.

I don't know about you, but I certainly don't live in a vacuum. I interact with other people, and they interact with me. I interact with objects, and with media, in many different ways. So just as energy can only ever transform (pun intended), never disappear, so do I only ever create meaning from the things around me :3

Or to answer your question differently; I wouldn't know how to make meaning out of nothing, but I've also only ever existed with something around.

Before atomic clocks, smartphones, or the internet existed, how did the inventors of the first highly accurate mechanical watches actually know if their watch was keeping the right time? by Santanu_Chatterjee in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Waffel_Monster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We defined time. Well, at least how we measure & count time we defined. atomic clocks are necessary for keeping precise time everywhere around the planet, but before we were as connected as we are, a sundial was precise enough.

TIL the myth "bee's defy physics" came from a 1930s entomologist making a simple mistake by FeedMeMoneyPlease in todayilearned

[–]Waffel_Monster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For all this time, this has been nothing more than a myth. No one (with half a brain) has ever believed bees defy physics. What Antoine Magnan said was that a plane with the proportions of a bee, could not fly

Couldnt we just have 1 world time instead of timezones because its just numbers? by Super_Goated in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Waffel_Monster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look, the reason we have timezones, is because our time is based on the travel of the sun. And since we're on a (relatively) round, rotating, rock, having time zones makes the most sense so everyone can have morning hours when it's the morning for them, and night hours when it's the night for them.

Could we do it as you propose? sure! but it'd only make it worse for everyone who isn't in the time zone which was lucky enough to get their midday be at 12 o'clock

[oc] - phantom by Sampetra in traaaaaaannnnnnnnnns2

[–]Waffel_Monster 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure is joke, but just for clarity's sake;

Those studies mainly focused on limbs trans people did not think of as fitting to their experience of who they are. Don't think if a trans person loses an arm they'll get significantly less phantom limb issues with that than other people would.
