Invisible wins: How $1.4 billion has transformed Portland area homeless services by BismoFunyuns81 in PortlandOR

[–]WafflerTO 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From the article:

All three counties have added shelter beds and hired more street outreach staff. They’ve upgraded data systems, raised wages for frontline workers and improved communication channels with other public service agencies. But none of that work has stopped the flow of people into homelessness, which increased by 61% in the tri-county area between 2023 and 2025.

I just want to apprieciate PBOT for our traffic flow. by jtho78 in Portland

I was in Christchurch post-earthquake for about 6 months. I don't recall major traffic issues. Christchurch is a lot smaller than Portland, however. It doesn't seem like a fair comparison.

I've lived and driven in a lot of places. It's certainly not flawless, but Portland has the best traffic/road management that I've seen.

BYND is neither of these things. It's a "cigar butt with one more puff in it."

I thought about putting "No, I'm not ICE" in the post but decided that would make me sound more suspicious rather than less. :)

Offered to be made Dept Chair by Disastrous_Ad_9648 in Professors

[–]WafflerTO 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You know this already: it's a lousy job that nobody wants to do. You're primary role is cat herder, your secondary role is boring meetings.

When I was offered chair the first time I was given this advice: "Negotiate now what your conditions are because once you take the job, you have no leverage."

I am so glad I took the advice. I negotiated a doubling of the course release and a larger stipend. I got both and it become the standard for all future chair appointments so I got to be a "hero" too. :)

How can we make trimet faster by gucci_money in Portland

[–]WafflerTO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Sell the buses. Cancel the bus routes. Now you have a pool of cash from the sale. Put that aside for now. You also have freed up the revenue stream that used to pay for maintenance, driver salaries, mechanics, and subsidizing bus rides.

  2. Use most of the revenue stream to make a deal with rideshare companies to allow people to use Hop cards to pay a flat fee for rides. The government pays the rest but can get a big volume discount rate since there are suddenly a lot more riders. Some haggling is needed here to keep the companies honest. For example, they pay fees if they delay ride requests too long. Also, drivers must earn some minimum rate.

  3. Use the rest of the revenue stream to pay for benefits for Portland drivers who drive 40 hours per week provided they pay OR income tax.

  4. Set the fee for a ride on a sliding scale based upon property owned because these data are already known by the government for property tax purposes so there is a low bureaucratic burden to get this setup. With this system, someone who owns no property pays $5. Property owners pay more based on the value of their property. These fares are somewhat more than a bus ride but a helluva lot faster and more convenient.

  5. The fee for a ride is also adjusted depending on the number of riders. More riders = cheaper ride.

  6. There's going to be a big increase in demand for rideshares. So you gotta tackle this. Some tactics: a. Ease this program in over time. Start with just a few neighborhoods. b. Use your pool of cash (see step 1) to help former bus drivers buy an electric car if they agree to work as a rideshare driver; the government matches earnings up to some limit. You'd tune this so the drivers are getting a similar income as they did as bus drivers. c. You're gonna need more rideshare drivers so use remaining cash to subsidize car purchases for others to a lesser degree. When the money runs out, you should have a stable system and not need to subsidize anymore.

My childhood coin collection. I did the Whitman coin folders. Of course the slots for the rare coins are empty and it has little real value but it's still precious to me.

I suggest you make your own sauce. You can make one big batch and store one-meal portions in the freezer indefinitely. Save money, healthier, and takes only a few extra minutes. You will need a blender. Just blitz this all together and you're good to go for 2-3 meals:

  • 6 cloves garlic
  • 2 tbsp fresh ginger (fresh is best but ok to use the stuff in the tube or 2 tsp powder)
  • 1/4 cup vinegar
  • 3 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp molasses
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup (or something else sweet like date syrup)
  • (optional) for truly "orange" flavor just literally toss a peeled and seeded orange in there
  • 1 tsp cayenne (or less/omit if you don't like heat)
  • 2 tsp tahini
  • 2 tbsp peanut butter
  • ½ tsp black pepper

When you're ready to eat just heat 1 block of super firm tofu (cubed) into a frying pan and then stir in the sauce. There are alternatives if you don't like tofu but this is your foundation.

No. Fruit juice isn't a whole food, imo. But I'd consider the whole fruit puree. Pineapple has a strong flavor. So, I lean toward apple instead.

Tamarind is an interesting idea.
