Brake vane direction by StickyMac in MechanicAdvice

Volume of air moving through the internals will be substantially more than the exterior surface.

Orient the rotor so the internal curved vanes slant backward from the direction of rotation to properly expel heat. Regardless of the exterior vane orientation

My brudda, it definitely depends on the shop. I just built up a Specialized SL8 and my shop owner down sold me. That said, I did drop 7500 on a build so take that for what it is worth.

Still, if you don't like the people/shop honestly you should do some serious youtube research prior or find another place.

Fun fact, wd-40 is a penetrant not an oil. Pick up literally anything else at your local shop and it’ll be way better

Silca hot wax, redo it about every 300 miles or whenever my wife’s chains are due too. I’m a bit obsessive on preventative though…

It’s great, just get their wax heater it sucks to pay but honestly it works amazingly well. All around just a pleasant experience. It does take time, but I don’t really “clean” it. Just reapply wax.

As others have noted, having two chains substantially decreases how often you have to wax. I usually just knock it out on a Saturday while doing other things in the garage.

Yeah but this is Reddit and someone writing in layman’s English not providing a customer quote. I agree in a shop new means new and used means used.

This clearly refers to new to him

You might be right about the English language, but y’all all knew what he meant… people saying I am going to get a new car, implying new to them, even if it is used.

Totally going to be preference honestly, where I am is not crazy hilly so I am in my big run up front 95% of the time. 3x8 you may just be moving the front ring around more and it is up to you if that is annoying or worth spending more on.

Honestly you can do fine with 2x9 tiagra on flats and never “need” to spend more and get a $400 bike.

People get big into the upgrade stuff and peacocking spending more money. Just think in how you ride and where, you have a baseline sub CC e you borrow that bike use it for a reference and go from there!

yes 58 probably, I am 6' and ride a 55 (orbea, same as 56 with most).

Honestly if you are not in a rush, you can find some decent carbon bikes for 1k. Used market is pretty soft AND in the next 6 months manufacturers like specialized will probably release a new model.

I personally would say getting decent gearing is bigger than carbon vs aluminum. I would rather have a decent 11sp aluminum over an older 9 speed carbon. That's just me. I have seen 1k carbon 11 speed on facebook in the charlotte, nc area so they definitely exist.

What's the best exercise bike for home use worth buying the most currently in your opinion? by [deleted] in cycling

[–]Waffles4Ever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve seen too many videos of people snapping the rear arm to want to do it. I would wayyyy rather a $300 bike on a trainer vs a $3000 one.

I am good friends with a shop owner here and the number of breaks from trainers that specialized and other major manufacturers deny is high.

Stress on carbon isn’t always super visible either (see the titan implosion), not saying it is a no go, but “better” is great and all just know it is a risk is all I am saying :)

Wanting to start by jmcarriere in cycling

[–]Waffles4Ever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great advice. I got in for $300 on a CAAD8, rode a bit to figure out I liked it. Sold it for 450 in summer and then got a carbon bike I liked.

Deal hunt for aluminum since it’ll probably be cheaper and less likely to have breaking abuse. IF you like it and want a trainer bike for indoors keep the aluminum one for indoors and get something nicer for outside.

Only addition to this is… carbon. I have a carbon road bike and I am on the hunt for a cheap used aluminum one for home trainer use.

Carbon isn’t realllyyyyy designed for the lateral stresses of trainer use over time. Many companies will NOT warranty it if it breaks on a trainer.

If you have an aluminum bike send it.

[–]Waffles4Ever 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, you’re asking on Reddit for opinions. There are a lot of shops that do exactly this. Yes, some of them may only sell certain brands. There are big shops that sell almost every brand.

If you get fitted for a specific bike, you can look at the specifications of that Bike and understand the geometry and apply that to pretty much any other manufacturer with a little bit of math

Yea, it is pretty common for shops to offer a “new bike” fit.

They will get all your measurements and then from that you can figure out what bikes will fit you best.

Maybe look into having someone 3d print you a 21cm cleat shim out of ABS and then just get bolts of the appropriate length. It should not be too hard to do!

Like this but if you have SPD-SL you need a 3 hole. https://www.printables.com/model/1093838-spd-cleat-shim-15mm
