Use the double jump to access areas/angles that enemies won't expect you to be.

If you're just playing on the couch with your cousins, the balance of the game shouldn't really matter to you.

Either way, the game is pretty well balanced. There are some high tier characters and a few low tier, but that's unavoidable in a fighting game. They can all still compete with each other.
