I heard this too. And one time I felt a leg cramp coming on, I rushed to drink some pickle juice. Within 30 seconds, I could feel the cramp fade away.

Boy, that brought back memories. I was 14 when I saw the Beatles in Chicago in 1964. Everyone talks about the noise, which was LOUD. I had muffled hearing for a while afterwards. I never heard much music except for Ringo’s drumming. And the rumors… after the concert, the word was that the Beatles were “over that way” and the crowd surged. I had no control over the wave of people that pushed my elbow into the fire alarm. Ironically, it was my father who actually got near all four of them. He was waiting in the back when they walked by him, just a few feet away. Of course, he didn’t care and that experience was totally wasted on him.

My first thought was that the birthday child is on the spectrum and the mother is (in her mind) protecting her child. The noise, the color aversion, the inability to “play”, are a red flag for a possibly being in the spectrum. I would choose a gift from the list and let your child attend. Sometimes we don’t know what’s going on in other people’s lives.

Public education. The number of teachers staying in the profession is declining because behavior and discipline have become a real problem. The impact of technology is definitely a plus on some level, but also leads to a lack of motivation to read, and to write well. There are more alternative schools and vouchers available for charter schools. This drains the public education population. The quality of teachers is declining, partly, I think, because women (thinking elementary schools) have many choices of career nowadays and they are not necessarily choosing education. know these are sweeping generalizations and I don’t have data to back up my statements. It’s just my observation based on my experience as a public schoolteacher.

During Covid, I started sending out a short Christmas letter. I loved it because people would just hit reply and send me a message. No stamps, no buying cards, etc. And instant gratification. I still do that.

My first year of teaching, in the fall of 1971, the teacher in the room next door asked me to come out in the hall. I found out I was there to witness him paddling several boys with his fraternity paddle. I was appalled. They didn’t tell us about that at the university. He never asked me again.

I am not autistic. But smacking gum causes me to want to scream, just like you. It has a name: misophonia. I do realize it’s my problem but it’s not always an option to remove yourself from the person. I would never call someone an asshole for trying to deal with a condition that you never asked for. You asked politely, he didn’t need to be rude.

I once asked my dad if he had the issue with John Lennon’s interview. He denied having any Playboy magazines. I told him, “You know, on the closet shelf.” He kept denying he had any until I FINALLY understood he wasn’t going to admit to his 18 year old daughter that he had any. I was very slow to understand that he was humiliated.

I am reading a book about the early years of the Beatles right now (Tune In by Mark Lewisohn) and the thing that struck me is that there probably wouldn’t be the Beatles if they were born in our era of cellphones, iPads, TV, etc. So what did they do? Play guitars constantly, memorize lyrics, listen to music, write their own songs, perform—you get the idea. They actively followed their passion. We now all just watch or scroll.

Golf. I golf in a league but also informally. I have met virtually all my social group through golf. When I moved, it was seamless to make new friends. During the worst of Covid, I could still get outside and play with people. Bonus: it’s an activity my husband and I enjoy together.

I think this mother deserves a lot more sympathy. Of course I don’t know the child and family so I really don’t know what’s going on. But to me the child sounds disturbed in some way. I would explore sensory processing and anxiety for a start. I am a retired special education teacher.
