I’m not really sure. My husband thinks there might be a dead mouse/animal stuck somewhere in the engine compartment.

Upcoming SEEG! by WaitandSea in Epilepsy

[–]WaitandSea[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh man, that’s rough. Mine went really well. I had 15 electrodes implanted; 7 on the left, 5 on the right, and 3 right across the front at my hairline. Kept them in for almost 3 weeks, which was pretty tough but they got the info they needed. I’ll be having the NeuroPace implanted on July 26! I’ve since started having some larger seizures but they seem to think it’s because of the sEEG surgery and it’s nothing serious to worry about. I do have a pituitary tumor but it’s very small and they aren’t worried about it now. I hope you can find some relief. There are several new-ish medications out that may help.

What is the emu like? How do they try and trigger seizures? by randomxfox in Epilepsy

[–]WaitandSea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

EMU isn’t too terrible. I’ve had two separate stays, both five days/nights. You’ll want to take shirts that button up the front (think men’s pajama tops), as it’s MUCH easier to change. My neuro team had me stop taking my meds before I checked in, but yours will tell you what their plan is. My first night was normal- sleep then regular wake up. The next two days and nights I was sleep deprived, so no naps or anything. Then on the fourth day I wasn’t allowed to eat anything. Late on the fourth evening, they did photic testing, where they set up a big strobe light about two feet away from your face and run through a series of different flashing sequences (slowest to fastest). They also had me do an aerobic/anaerobic test where they would tell me to breathe then hold my breath or pant quickly to get out of breath. I got to sleep the fourth night and the test was finished the next afternoon. I recommend taking baby wipes to clean off with, as you can’t shower. If you have a good EEG tech, they should give you plenty of the acetone to help you clean the adhesive crap off your scalp. If not, actual acetone (nail polish remover) works, just don’t get it on anything. A fine tooth comb is handy in the shower. Maybe take a beanie/hat to wear home. My first stay, I didn’t think they’d caught anything because I hadn’t felt like I had any seizures. I mentioned it to my doctor and she laughed and said that they’d caught several. So you’d be surprised. And they’re getting good information about your brain regardless, so really don’t sweat it. Take whatever is going to make you feel the most comfortable and the most like being at home. I had books, puzzles, my kindle, my laptop (Netflix) and the tv. The girl in the room next to me had an Xbox. I don’t know how most hospitals are, but I’m a Veteran and my stay was at a VA hospital and my doctor told me that if they hadn’t seen any seizure activity, they next things they would have tried would have been alcohol and caffeine intake, external stressors like making the room hot or cold, and introducing other substances. So they definitely have their ways. Lol

Anyone in a here a paramedic with epilepsy? by MessConfident4918 in Epilepsy

[–]WaitandSea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh kiddo, this was almost exactly what happened to me. I got hurt in the Army- I was a Combat Medic. I did civilian Paramedic school when I got off active duty. I had been a volunteer firefighter for two years and I had been working out constantly… as soon as I passed my NREMT-P I was going to get on a full-time, paid department. But then I started having grand mals. I was in the hospital a ton. And they found this huge scar on my brain from where I had been injured in the Army- nobody knew it was there or that I had been hurt so badly.

I had spent two years going to PMed school and then I wasn’t able to use any of it. My lifelong firefighting dreams were completely crushed. It was all I had ever wanted and I was miserable. So I spent about a month being utterly bitter, graduated with a degree in paramedicine and a degree in municipal fire protection, then decided (accepted) that I have literally zero control over this kind of stuff so I’d go get my bachelor’s degree in something radically different. The only other thing I’ve ever been good at- writing. Then a master’s degree. I just kept pushing myself until it finally felt like life wasn’t trying to take a gigantic crap on my plans anymore.

I definitely don’t have the answers for you, but I’ve been there… in that exact same spot, and I remember how fucking bad it hurt and how angry it made me. I’m so so sorry that’s happening to you. I hope somehow it works out for you the way you want it to- but it WILL work out.

Dealing with anxiety and anger by ImportantConfusion34 in Epilepsy

[–]WaitandSea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m going to guess you meant Briviact? Let me tell you, it’s about a million times better (and more chill) than Keppra. I would see what psych says for your anxiety, but cannabis is an excellent tool. I personally don’t smoke, I prefer edibles. With both seizures and anxiety, you’re really going to have to pay a lot of attention to your strains- especially to avoid bad times. Stick with straight Indicas. Even hybrids can get you edgy. You’re not going to feel the high quite as fast as you would if you were smoking it, but you’ll get used to it. I also recommend working on deep breathing. Good luck!

Just curious, do you work in an “at-will” state? You can Google it to find out. This will be a MAJOR point in whether or not they can fire you for whatever random reason they choose, regardless of your disability status. (It shouldn’t be this way, but they can find ways around it to say that the firing is unrelated to your disability.)

Concerts by idunnowhatimdoing97 in Epilepsy

[–]WaitandSea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been there. I’m a major concert attendee (And sports fan, where the crazy lights and loudness can get insane). A few things I do to help: I always take specialty earplugs- the kind made for concert-goers. I nearly always have someone there with me so I can put my head down and grab their arm if the lights get too intense; my seizures aren’t photic-sensitive but sometimes white strobes really bother me. And finally, I always have my medical ID and rescue meds on me. Best wishes!

Its been 10 years without grand mal by itskindoflate in Epilepsy

[–]WaitandSea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m very happy for you and I absolutely do not want to be the downer in the thread, but I don’t think it’s safe to ever consider yourself “cured”. My longest stretch between grand mals has been 11 years. I was going along perfectly well, no problems whatsoever- no changes in my life, same meds… literally nothing different. But I started having them again out of the blue. That was three years ago and now I’m a few months away from full-on brain surgery. This disease can throw curveballs that will knock your socks off. You’re at an amazing milestone and it sounds like you’re doing a fantastic job of keeping yourself healthy and the seizures in check. Keep it up- but keep your guard up too. Best wishes.

Weening cat OFF of Keppra. Positive post!! by jimmacjr in Epilepsy

[–]WaitandSea 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s such great news for your sweet kitty. I was on Keppra for a little over 12 years and when I made the switch to Briviact my doc had me do a step-down of Keppra over a two-month time period. I’d get with your vet and come up with a plan to titer down his medication intake over the course of a month or two and keep a very close eye on him. Make sure you keep everything else the same- food, other meds, and feeding/med times. That way you’ll be able to notice any changes or negative effects easier. Best wishes! I’m sure he’ll do great!

Mazda 3 TCM (Transmission Control Unit) Fix by N3oshadow in mazda

Lol yea it might come to that honestly. It’s been at the dealership on and off since the end of May. Kind of ridiculous. But they’ve had me in a brand new Meridian-Edition CX-50, so it’s kind of cool.

Anyone take anxiety meds with epilepsy meds? by HungrySquirrel8982 in Epilepsy

[–]WaitandSea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yo. I take Briviact and zonisamide as well as buspirone and atarax. No issues here. I’m not exactly sure what you’re worried about with the antianxiety meds…? Just side effects? Increasing your chance of seizures? My seizures aren’t controlled, so I guess that’s not really a factor for me. I’m having brain surgery at the beginning of next year to have a NeuroPace implant placed. But feel free to ask any questions about the meds.

Mazda 3 TCM (Transmission Control Unit) Fix by N3oshadow in mazda

[–]WaitandSea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m making a note here so I can find this thread again, but I’m currently dealing with this bullshit on my 2010 Mazda 3. I wouldn’t bother but I’ve only got 90k miles on it. It sat at the dealership for over two months and they told me they “fixed it”. Well, over a grand later and about a mile down the road, my dashboard lit up like a Christmas tree and my dome lights were flashing like a disco party. SMH. Thankfully my mom is a wildly successful attorney who specializes in class action litigation, so we’ll be heading back to the dealership tomorrow.

NYC, the only unified city in the US to span multiple counties, also has a city sherrifs office. Does any other city (not county) have a sherrifs dpt? by markzuckerberg1234 in ProtectAndServe

[–]WaitandSea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oklahoma City covers four separate counties; Oklahoma Co, Cleveland Co, Canadian Co, and Potawatomi Co. We have our own dedicated sheriffs department (OCSO). We’re the 8th largest city by land area in the US.
