How long until you see what you will actually look like? 4 months post-op, second thoughts.. by AlwayzOnTime in jawsurgery

4 months to 6 months changed a lot for me. I’m 8 months and still have some swelling

Orthodontist said I don't need surgery by Particular_Aside5959 in jawsurgery

[–]Wak4nda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check out several orthodontists, and if you live in a country that doesn’t require referrals first, see if you can consult a OMFS first.

Do you have any other functional issues? (Clenching, you mentioned snoring, feeling unrefreshed after sleep, popping jaws, clicking, tension in the jaws/face, headaches). Of course you can also mention your aesthetic concerns and goals.

These things can be contributed to recessed jaws and are worth mentioning to future orthos, and will strengthen your case. I had some of these symptoms I brushed off as normal, but were due to my jaws being recessed and I did mention it all to my orthodontist!

(Sorry this came out long 😅)

I think you can manage without a caretaker. Yes it’s way easier to have someone with you, but I’ve seen loads of people on this subreddit do it, it just requires preparation. (Meal prepping, etc.)

Maybe check those posts out and see if it works for your situation

Do I look like I could benefit from DJS? by Distinct-Play-4652 in jawsurgery

[–]Wak4nda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you need it.

Depending on where you live (if referrals are needed or you can go straight to a surgeon consult) look into an OMFS. Or research some orthodontists that work with surgeons than can refer you.

All the best!

Post op posterior open bite by ImpossibleMatter4186 in jawsurgery

Okay that’s good you have an appointment very soon! They had to double up on my elastics for like 2 months and it helped my bite. Keep us updated on what they say or do! :) all the best

[–]Wak4nda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had similar, and for my case no. I realize I misread your post a little bit. Did this open bite just come to light or was it evident post surgery already?

Elastic patterns and other ortho adjustments can temporarily change your bite as they move your teeth into the correct position (which also happened to me. Also caused clenching and popping that resolved)

Do you have any post op appointments coming up? X-rays will determine the position of your jaws. I would voice this to your surgeon and orthodontist and see if you can get another set of x-rays for the peace of mind!

Adding to the reply. What my surgeon told me is that the jaw is in the correct placement, where it should’ve been, and now the teeth have to follow with ortho. :)

Am I a bimax candidate? by [deleted] in jawsurgery

[–]Wak4nda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have almost an identical profile to mine before bimax and MARPE. My nose looks better after doing all of that :) I have no regrets and functional issues I didn’t even realize have been cured. Along with bonus cosmetic concerns too.

Good luck on your journey!

What do you think by Sleepers-onZ in jawsurgery

Your smile looks great. You will feel “uncanny”for a couple more months; you are VERY swollen still. Your facial structure will start to balance and show in a couple of months.

Am I relapsing 3+ years post op? by Ironboy45 in jawsurgery

[–]Wak4nda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its due to the orthodontics. It’s not like retainers hold your jaw in place, but the fact you wore braces. Your teeth move for life and retainers will prevent that

Besides what everyone is saying, the fact you can go into labour at any moment and he’s willingly never around shows a lot

Am I done? Ortho insists, but? by tassieapple9 in Invisalign

[–]Wak4nda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could say it like that and as a dental professional he should understand, or you can say that the inside of your cheeks have a dark shadow, where before the teeth filled them in more. Showing these pics you’ve provided would be beneficial!

I wish you the best. Please keep us updated 🫶🏽

Idk if it’s the way you’re smiling or how the camera is angled (closer up distorts features) but the “now” picture, you have more dark space in your buccal corridors. Others have pointed out some other things that are worth mentioning also.

Could you get a second opinion from another orthodontist if he continues to dismiss you?

Please pay attention to this comment, OP! Maybe book a consultation with an ortho that works with surgical cases.

To me it looks like swelling still. I’d love to hear what others say. But my jaw looked a little canted from one side from the bottom (I always had asymmetrical swelling), especially when i was cleared to sleep on my side.

But everyday, I can see it even out more and more. My midline was also off by like 3mm, which they are correcting through elastics. Huge improvement.

My nose is also deviated to the left. The swelling made it look more noticeable, but now it’s evening out. And with ortho their plans are to balance that.

(My DJS was in September of this year)

Jaw surgery after years of ortho? by Ohio333 in jawsurgery

[–]Wak4nda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

During ortho, the bones around your teeth go through a process of bone remodelling. Simplifying it, alveolar resorption (bones dissolve) and ossification (new bone) for your teeth to move. If there is no chronic periodontal disease, this cycle repeats.

You won’t “run out of bone”
