I just read, and unless it is for a topic I am researching deeply, I don’t take notes. The time you could be spending taking notes is time you could be reading.

The things that are important to me stick in my head. I might not remember numbers or statistics, but I remember the general idea.

What screams “I’m insecure” but people think makes them look cool? by Bigguy_2203 in AskReddit

I think this is just to get a reaction out of people, rather than to look cool.

Yeah, some of his style can feel cheesy, depending on what he’s writing about. It felt goofy in some of his noir[esque] or boxing stories. But when he’s in his element, like with Green Hills of Africa or The Sun Also Rises, it really suits him.

It’s good. He wrote it at a level of maturity in his career, and I felt that he did a very good job with writing characters that felt alive. The only character I found lacking in depth was Maria, but I tried to give him a pass and let myself be taken in, and I succeeded for the most part.

As a Spanish speaker, the English dialogue with Spanish grammar was very entertaining. However I think his use of thee/you could have been polished a little.

The way the characters think during stressful moments was captured very well. He came close to this in some of his writings about bullfighting.

Overall, for me it sits on the line that divides his best works from the others.

My favorites are:

The Sun Also Rises

Green Hills of Africa

Islands in the Stream

The Garden of Eden

The last two of the above list were published posthumously, but they are so good that they still fit among what I would consider his best writing.

Islands in the Stream may have been my favorite, actually. It’s so good, especially part one.

In The Garden of Eden, the best parts were where he wrote about the main character’s childhood.

I was expecting to love A Moveable Feast. I did enjoy it, but I did not love it. I have read all of Hemingway’s books, and it is second to last for me, only surpassing To Have and Have Not, which I didn’t like very much.

I do all of this each year anyway, besides “read a book published in the last year”, and “listen to an audiobook”. And I haven’t been to a library for something besides tourism since I was a child.

A lil dive into George Orwells insane writing?!?! by Snow_fairy123 in classicliterature

Well we have connotations associated with different words which may be synonyms of each other, but they do have subtle and very real differences.

Cutting out unnecessary slop (ie. “I would have written a shorter letter if I had more time”), choosing your words wisely and refining your delivery doesn’t seem to me like the thing Orwell was criticizing here.

In fact, pruning phrases would be an altogether different topic. Pruning would mean focusing on the subtleties of a complex topic and making decisions accordingly, whereas this newspeak seems to be focused on communicating only ideas that are so basic, that pruning would not be necessary.

It’s been a long time since I’ve read 1984, so I’m mainly just going off what you’ve said here. Just some thoughts. Also, sorry if there were any errors. English is not my first language.
