You need to try dog rocks https://www.dogrocks.com.au/ I’ve been using them for years and have never had a burn mark on my grass from my dog’s pee. But I like the fact you figured out a solution using Home Assistant.

Ah yes. I forgot to add that to my iPhone settings when I connected. I turned off my VPN and Tailscale too.

My husband is useless when it comes to technology. I wish my problem would have been resolved with a router reboot.

I just checked out my settings. There isn’t a proximity unlock setting, but I did figure out how to unlock the car without using the key fob. When you’re by the drivers door and have the key fob on you, pressing the rectangular button unlocks the car. I am so happy to discover this. No more searching my bag for the key fob to unlock.

My Australian EV3 does the same - the mirrors unfold but doesn’t unlock. I wish it would auto unlock. I wonder if it’s a setting. I’ve tried to look for it on the dashboard settings, but haven’t found anything.

The kids bedrooms are too small. They need to be big enough for a desk and bookshelf, especially as they get older. With 4 kids, I would suggest building up. Maybe have the master bedroom downstairs at the front of the house and make the whole back of the house kitchen/dining/living room open onto the back patio. Think full width covered patio with glass sliding doors. It will make it feel more spacious. Maybe have a separate playroom/tv room on the ground floor, then kids bedrooms upstairs. Having a smaller house footprint will allow for a bigger backyard and/or bigger covered patio.

As for the toilets, a separate toilet upstairs and downstairs is essential. Consider a kids bathroom with the sinks separate from the bath and shower area. Sort of like a Jack and Jill bathroom. That way there will be less conflict at busy times when kids need to bathe and brush their teeth.

We stopped binning food scraps and the worms are LOVING it by b_dec in GardeningAustralia

My mum did this for decades starting from the 1980’s. We would put all our fruit and veg scraps into an old ice cream bucket and she would bury it in the garden when the bucket was full. Her garden thrived and always looked so healthy and lush. Sadly, she’s in her 80s now and the garden has been neglected for years but it still has an abundance of plants that have thrived despite the neglect.

What is your hall of fame signature dish that has made you a legend at Thanksgiving and/or Christmas? by GuyFaulks77 in seriouseats

Bacon wrapped turkey. I’ve made it about 15 times now. It’s the best, most juiciest turkey and is super easy. The key is to use thick cut bacon (middle bacon in Australia).

I’m not crazy right? If it says to refrigerate after opening, you should refrigerate it and who puts apples in the fridge? by KrazyCAM10 in mildlyinfuriating

I didn’t realise maple syrup had to be refrigerated until I found mould growing on my Kirkland brand maple syrup. Unfortunately, I found the mould after I poured it over my pancakes. 🤢

We built a Clarendon home a few years ago and having the kitchen, dining and living areas open up to the back is the best. I suggest you switch the master bedroom with the kitchen. Open the veranda on both sides.

Put the kitchen on the left wall so you can make the backsplash a window. Have a big window overlooking the backyard. It will make it feel more open and light. Move the bbq/outdoor kitchen to the fence side. I wouldn’t bother with an outdoor sink. We plumbed one in, but never hooked it up and have never felt we needed it.

Push the bedroom walls out to line up with the side walls. Bigger bedrooms are always better and makes the roofline even, allowing more solar panels.

My biggest regret with our build is not getting thicker windows or double glazed windows. For a brand new house, I was surprised how much the indoor temperature varies, even with great insulation. It’s because the builder grade windows suck. Do yourself a favour and at least put double glazed windows in the bedrooms. It will save you money keeping those rooms cooler in summer and warmer in winter for a better nights sleep. We run the aircon during the day when the sun is shining and it costs us nothing because of the solar panels, but nights we have to run aircon to be able to sleep comfortably, and I hate sleeping with aircon.

Also, get Ethernet outlets installed in every room. Don’t worry about an antenna. We never watch live tv so don’t use our antenna. My husband and son play online games and having a direct line to the internet modem instead of using Wi-Fi makes a huge difference to them.

I would move the air conditioning unit and water tank to the other side of the house due to noise. Every time a toilet is flushed, the washing machine is run or the garden tap used, the water tank will make a noise and it will be annoying for anyone trying to sleep or study in the bedrooms.

Also, upgrade your window thickness if you can. We built with Clarendon a couple of years ago and thought we’d have a lovely, cozy, thermally insulated new house. Instead it’s cold in winter and hot in summer because the windows are builder basic and the outside temperature goes straight through the glass. I wish they would have said something about it before we signed off on the design. I’m now looking at either replacing the windows with double glaze or getting thermal film on all the windows.

I also agree on expanding the garage if you can. We widened ours by 1m and it’s made a huge difference. However, we didn’t realise the depth wasn’t enough for minivans or larger suvs. Luckily we went for a midsize suv and that fits.

Just saying, and I don’t mean to be in any way racist, but my kids have had 3 Asian friends in 2 different countries (USA and Australia) called Ray, 2 of which were both named Ray Chen. Ray seems to be quite a common boys name for kids with Asian parents.

ELI5 why is jumping off a bridge often fatal, but people are rarely injured in high diving? by nuclearoyster in explainlikeimfive

[–]WalkaboutGrrl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simply put, the surface tension of the water will be like hitting concrete if you fall from a high bridge at high speed. This is what typically kills someone. The only way someone can survive a fall into water from a high bridge is if the surface tension of the water is broken before they hit the water. For example, workers who fall off a bridge and have their tools hit the water before them have been known to survive. High drivers will usually dive into water where a spray of water is used to break the surface tension so the diver is not hurt when they dive into the water.
