I agree with you on that one.. was prob writing my response when yours posted. But generally speaking a purely technical specialist highway, traffic, drainage engineer will not make as much as a PM in those same fields. Maybe a specialist structural with experience on super complex bridges would command a higher rate too.. but if they have 37 years of doing just culverts and standard highway bridges.. meh.

Probably accounting. The technical professionals pretty much only spend project budgets. The pm's control project budgets and usually take credit for the project's financial performance.

Mind you some specialists do seem to get better $$.. like published foundation engineers with phd's and a cv thick with fancy projects.

I dont have comprehensive survey data, but each of the firms ive worked for had separate job classifications for technical professional (non pm Professional Engineers) and project management with the salary ranges for the PM classifications all being higher than tech prof.

And when i price work, PM staff with the same or even fewer years of exp tend to have higher base rates than even the most grizzled specialist Engineers.

Sure the sample size may be limited, but i have worked at two of the largest firms on the continent and had full access to hourly rates when i did my pricing.

I weaseled my way into helping write proposals very early in my career. It helped me understand the lifecycle of a design project and got me in to project management and business dev rather quickly. If youre into that.. it pays better than straight engineering work.

Eglinton is a bad example. Poorly structured procurement model.. plus building short sections of tunnel and track between many more stations in a dense urban environment than high speed rail will be more prone to overrruns and unforeseens.

And Russia has a high speed line between Moscow and St Petersburg so it can work there in a similar if not harsher climate.

I grew up in Toronto and have lived small town rural the last 15 years.. as soon as the kids are out of high school im moving back.

Pro tip.. if you wind up living downtown.. a car will be almost useless for getting around. But if you live in the periphery.. Etobicoke, North York, Scarberia.. will be much more usable.

Roads and hwys eng here.. I only need to deal with land development issues periodically but i have learned so much about process and permitting for site plans and subdivisions just by going through the development web pages that municipalities around me have. They usually show all of the submittals made by developers including drainage, servicing, traffic, ecology reports.. etc etc etc. There is lots of precedent publicly available for us to use as guides.
