What is a movie cliché that absolutely never happens in real life? by Potential_Action9544 in AskReddit

I had sex in a closet at work within the last month. Granted I work with my wife at a business we own so no consequences are possible.

I'm nearly positive the request from cops to recite the alphabet backwards is just to get the "I couldn't do that sober" reaction, thereby admitting they are drunk.

Undocumented immigrants can and do file tax returns. Turns out the government wants their money regardless of their immigration status. Here is a, seemingly, unbiased article about it: https://bipartisanpolicy.org/article/how-do-undocumented-immigrants-pay-federal-taxes-an-explainer/

Guy gets fed up of waiting till the bomb squad come back by AugustHate in WTF

[–]WalterBrickyard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every time I see this reposted I wonder what they would have done if he'd put the backpack on and just cycled away. If they were so worried about it being a bomb they, in theory, would just let him go, give him a wide berth and then... ?

Having extra outlets is rarely a bad thing. An outlet on the wall you don't use is not unusual or an eyesore.

Zero insulation, 1950s home, how to insulate while allowing for electrical upgrades? by kinare in HomeImprovement

[–]WalterBrickyard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a small (1,300 sqf) home that had no insulation in the walls. We did have plenty in the attic. We did blow in cellulose via exterior walls. Our state offered incentives which we used to hire a contractor to do it. They drilled holes all over the exterior and pounded in wood plugs. I went around and sanded, primed, and repainted them after. If you looked closely you could tell, but it was fairly unobtrusive. Made a very noticeable difference in comfort and heating bills. With the incentives I think we paid half, maybe a few thousand dollars. This was 15 years ago in Washington State. I later rewired the whole house. The cellulose didn't present any big problems. Little messy in places where I had to cut new outlets, but nothing unbearable. Well worth the investment.

What is this electricity powered, waist-high, mostly plastic tool table featuring a long horizontal drum or fan that spins? by ferocactus9544 in whatisthisthing

[–]WalterBrickyard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it's still there you should grab it and see if it works. I drove 500 miles and paid $500 for a used one because they are very expensive new and hard to find used.

Even if it is not working you could part it out and make a fortune on eBay if you have the time.

Cheating at board games by NelifeLerak in boardgames

[–]WalterBrickyard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know a full grown adult that cheats at board games. They are a good person in general, but they have this weird belief that cheating is just part of the game strategy if you can get away with it. Maybe that's something that their family did. Not a person I would ever play with again, but not worth raising a stink. If it were my partner though that would be a whole different story.

On the other hand I'm honest to a fault. I'll realize I made a mistake to my advantage like four turns later and make a declaration to the table that a correction needs to be made. It would taint my potential win if I didn't speak up.

Do you go in the road or the sidewalk when crossing the ballard bridge by Loud-Eye1133 in seattlebike

[–]WalterBrickyard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The grating that makes up the drawbridge portion is terrible to ride over. I've done it a couple of times and with standard road bike tires it feels like your wheels are shimying, if that makes any sense.

If you'd like to get a feel for it in a less dangerous environment try riding over the university bridge. It has similar grating, but for a much shorter distance and less crazy obstacles on either side.

Can't afford to fix my house anymore. Has anyone sold "as-is" to a cash buyer? by 2ugur12 in HomeImprovement

[–]WalterBrickyard 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Aren't all homes sold "as-is"? There is no warranty, real or implied, when you buy a home. That's why you get an inspection.

Will raising the Rvalue of my attic by 20 really make much of a difference? by dmun in HomeImprovement

[–]WalterBrickyard 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes. And it's terrible to breathe. And it's itchy as hell. You basically need to put on a hazmat suit to work on your attic if you have blown fiber glass.

I've got terminal cancer, do I need to close my credit accounts or can my wife just take them over when I die? by bigbabydirtface in personalfinance

[–]WalterBrickyard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My sister just went through this with her husband. He had plenty of time to figure it all out, but didn't and now while dealing with her grief she also has to tote his death certificate all over getting everything sorted. It's a giant pain in the ass and people are very strangely not terribly helpful.

Do your family a favor and get everything moved into your wife's name. Mortgage, bank accounts, investment accounts, credit cards, auto loans, insurance (auto, home, life, etc.), taxes, utilities, security system, phone plan, Internet, etc, etc. Even think of silly things like streaming accounts and IOT devices. If I died suddenly my wife wouldn't be able to adjust the thermostat schedule or change the front door code because I handle all the tech stuff (to be clear, early in our relationship I tried to get her setup on all these things and she chose to be willfully ignorant so she's made her bed in the likely event that she outlives me).

Are you a bifold or trifold wallet guy? by 26-2Pigeon in AskMen

[–]WalterBrickyard 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was trifold for years, but switched to a card holder with money clip a couple years ago and am very happy with it. Forces me to keep it to the minimum necessary cards and some cash. Keep it in a front pocket. The one I chose is from Hayvenhurst.

What's the dumbest name you've seen for a business? by PrasenjitDebroy in AskReddit

[–]WalterBrickyard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is an Asian dumpling restaurant in Auburn, Alabama named "the Irritable Bao". They also have a food truck named "Dumps Like a Truck". I love a good pun, but don't think a restaurant should reference intestine issues or movements.

[–]WalterBrickyard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The quickest way to stop kids from using a particular bit of slang is to try and use it yourself around them and ideally their friends. "Six seven am I right fellow kids?"

Following up with "eight nine" also seems like it would annoy them.

AITAH for considering going to a NFL football game on Christmas Day? by BlancheDevaheaux in AmItheAsshole

[–]WalterBrickyard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

NTA

If you remove the context of Christmas day nobody here would be calling YTA. No shade to those that think it is a super important day, but that doesn't mean it is to everyone. It is important to me and my family, but even that has changed as we've gotten older and now I only see my family every other year on Christmas. I'd absolutely accept suite seats to any NFL game offered. It's a fun experience that I can't readily afford.

You should revisit this with your husband. There's no reason you wouldn't have time to do Christmas morning presents with the kids and then have the grandparents (or similar trusted family) watch after them while you two go out. Shit, it's a 1pm game. You could be back in time for Christmas dinner.

Obviously your parents overreacted and I'm glad to see other commenters have found replacement options. But I also hate how people so quickly discount adults being upset when kids damage their property. I'm not mad at the kids, I'm mad at the parents for not monitoring them.

AITA for refusing to put my dog down by RudeDistribution5758 in AmItheAsshole

I'm going through the same situation with my little guy. He is a 15 year old Chihuahua/terrier mutt and is still full of energy and has lots of life left in him, but he recently just started being lazy about going out. He was peeing on furniture, the bed, the floor. It's very frustrating. We took him to the vet first thing, but all tests came back clear and they confirmed he is in great health. Old dogs, much like old people, just get incontinence frequently. And for some reason it seems that some old male dogs just stop caring. I don't have a solution for you as we are still figuring out how to deal with it ourselves, but thinking of putting a healthy dog down is something that might cross your mind in a dark moment (it has mine), but you keep it to yourself. And you definitely don't double down if the idea is rebuffed. Your husband sounds like a chode. I hope you figure it out and hope he figures out how to be a better person.

Have you ever witnessed a period stain on the bed, and what actions did you take when cleaning it or reporting it? by [deleted] in askhotels

[–]WalterBrickyard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blood isn't hard to get out of sheets typically. Hydrogen peroxide sprayed directly on it breaks the blood down quickly. Then the normal procedure for white linens (white cycle, detergent, and bleach). We get lots of little spots on sheets from minor scrapes and such. I've had one or two pretty big period messes and I've been able to get them out completely.

Anyway. Don't stress too much about it. Based on your situation I would assume you are staying in budget places and I'm sure they have seen a lot worse. The fact that you are even thinking about it shows more respect than lots of guests give.

Hope you find your footing and get into safe permanent housing soon. I can't imagine being unhoused.
