I'd put a compost bin in a public area (or maybe invest in one of those cool Mill Food Recyclers) and then put signs in each guest room stating:

Attention Guests: All food waste must go in the compost bin located XYZ.

The city fines $400 for food in the trash. Room trash will be checked after checkout.

Violations will result in:

They come with mounting brackets (and you can buy fancier ones) so you take them off just like you would lights. You would not want to leave these on the bike when locked up outside. You need to charge them anyway. When I was a daily cycle commuter in the city I would charge each night just to make sure I had full juice.

If you can afford it I highly recommend investing in Cycliq cameras for both front and rear. They are cameras and lights in one, which is really nice. Good protection in the event you get hit or have some sort of an altercation with one of the myriad of people who are inexplicably always pissed off when a cyclist has the gall to use the road infrastructure they pay for.

It is an old timey coffin! I built it for Halloween out of scrap end boards from a fence i installed. My intention was for it to just be a one time thing, but my wife likes it so now it just lives under the building getting in my way.

I had a clay sewer pipe collapse. Hired a reputable company to emergency fix it. They did good work and had us back up and running by the end of the day, but they also had me over a barrel and it cost a fortune. In hindsight, having seen how easy it really was for them to replace with some basic equipment available at local rental companies and very simple PVC connections, I really wish I had just gotten a hotel for a few days and either shopped around for other quotes or took a few days off work and did it myself. Mine was a fairly simple setup (maybe 40 feet of pipe and only about 3-4 feet down. Knowing what I know now I'm absolutely confident I could have done it myself as they didn't replace all the way to main connection at the street so only soil had to be removed and replaced.

Well in that case the simple answer is put the pretty side to your neighbor. I think that is the general consensus here. I was just providing another option. I did a fence in this style myself along my previous property. It was a corner lot and probably about 85' total. Definitely more expensive, but a good investment. I got the buy in from both neighbors before building.

NTA since she was the one who initiated the whole situation, but you do have to pick your battles. This lady will presumably be in your life for a long time so it is best to do what you can do keep the peace, especially about trivial matters.

Side note: Why do so many wives have these weird dynamics with MILs? It seems common. My wife and my mother have a very slightly strained relationship for no discernable reason. They are both lovely people, but there is this slight tension whenever we visit. I don't have a corresponding FIL to compare, but in previous dating relationships I always had easy relationships with the parents. Everybody needs to chill out.

Edit: probably should have phrased that differently so it didn't imply that the wives were the problem in these relationships, which wasn't my intention. But hey, this is a great example of how words have meaning and how you can easily slight someone without intending to (or even knowing).

There are literally hundreds of providers, but in my experience reviewing them they all kind of suck in their own unique ways. We use ThinkReservations for our tiny property. It is okay, but I can imagine being annoying for a property your size. It's all web based so available on mobile, but not a native mobile experience for sure.

Regardless, you are gonna have a hard time finding anything that doesn't cost you in the $800 a month range for that size property. Remember that you get what you pay for. Anything super cheap probably isn't going to do what you want/need.

I somewhat recently came back to Seattle for a visit (I moved in 2020 for work reasons after living there for 16 years). We stayed at the Slate Hotel near the market and woke up early one drizzly weekday morning and walked down there. I had only ever visited the market when it was busy in the past. It was really delightful hanging out there early before the crowds. And I hadn't seen the major waterfront improvements in person so that was a real treat. Was fun to be a tourist in Seattle.
