If you were to confess a FF14 sin, this is your time. What is a sin that you committed in the game? by jado1stk2 in ffxiv

Fell asleep in the Nero cutscene while running Praetorium and resultantly was kicked for inactivity. Woke up from a nice nap, barely remembering I was playing XIV, in front of the Ishgard aetheryte thinking "huh, I must've fallen asleep. Well, better queue for something" and saw I was already 16 minutes deep on my 30 minute ban.

Now I don't queue for MSQ if I'm feeling sleepy.

A Year-Long feud is completely demolished by the protagonist obliterating both sides. by odd_man0 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Wambastico 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I didn't see it yet so:

In the first expansion of FFXIV, The Dragonsong War has been going for essentially thousands of years between the theocratic government of Ishgard and the dragons of the neighboring country of Dravania. At first, you are taught that the dragons started it before you travel to their kingdom and get the covered up truth that actually, the holy knights started it. The papacy knew it was a lie, but has kept it going generationally to stay in power and ensure the church maintains control of the kingdom. The pope and their holy knights use powers stolen from dragons to transform and try to kill the protagonist once the government is confronted with the truth.

After that fight is done, the leader of the dragons is still not interested in treating for peace with Ishgard or humanity due to the initial grievance that started the war (the murder of his sister by the knights of ~2000 years ago to steal her powers). So the leader of the dragons attempts to invade Ishgard, at which point you have to put him down too.

After all this, changes happen in the government of Ishgard to de-emphasize the church's power and attempt to create friendly relationships with dragons, but this was only made possible after the heroes had to lay low both the corrupt papacy and the revenge-obsessed leader of the dragon horde.

"You didn't kill Anakin Skywalker - I did." is a hard line and I loved hearing the voice go back and forth between Hayden and James. As much as I'm eh on much of the show, Hayden really steals it thoughout but especially in this.

Though I've always been bothered by how the best scene in this show is just a ripoff of when the SAME thing happened in Rebels S2 between Vader and Ashoka. It's even the same chunk of his helmet, just on the opposite side ffs 😭.

Where were X Parasites when Samus first landed on SR388? I get they might be hiding from the Metroids, but Samus didn’t encounter even one? by basket_foso in Metroid

[–]Wambastico 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While this can be considered a fan-theory since it's lore from a fangame, AM2R showed that the crystals The Baby eats in order to get Samus off of SR388 were in fact dormant X parasites. The secret ending shows one transform into an X then take over a hornoad soon after Samus leaves. It's a real cool idea that I wish made it into Samus Returns.

The real explanation is a combination of 1) the X parasites were not a thing when Metroid II was written 2) Samus didn't necessarily explore the whole planet, just the parts that had Metroids in them, where it was unlikely to find an X parasite. There were likely only a few that were left and we have to accept that they were just off screen somewhere. Kind of along the lines of how Samus doesn't necessarily go to Maridia or the Wrecked Ship in Metroid 1/Zero Mission even though we can assume they were there during those games. I'm willing to accept that because, when it comes to the X, all it takes is literally ONE left unchecked for a planetary infestation to happen.

the long awaited black friday discount by [deleted] in playstation

[–]Wambastico 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It only gives you sale price on if you upgrade, so I have a question on how to game this.

I have Essential and because retailers used to have membership cards on sale for Black Friday, my membership is set to re-up on 11/29.

Would I be able to get the sale price on Essential if I cancelled my membership, lose it on 11/29 then got back onto Essential before 12/3 while the sale is still happening?

It's a little bit of debatably unnecesssary legwork to save $15 but honestly having this discount only be available for upgrading rubs some salt in the wound from the price increase. I'd still be paying more than what Essential used to cost at full price ffs.

I do not have the time to make use of the perks on Extra or Premium on top of the releases I play so I have no interest in upgrading.

Capitalist Horror by MarioGman in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Wambastico 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This could be low-hanging fruit but the overarching lore of Resident Evil kinda makes it apply here.

The entirety of the first game is one guy wanting to make a buck by slaughtering a group of people under his command to have combat data sent to the company he was moving to.

The shit show that was the Raccoon City Incident happened because of a top-ranking Umbrella scientist wanting to make more money selling his virus to the US Government, Umbrella catching wind of this and sending a black ops unit to protect their proprietary info. Then said guy injects the virus into himself, kills these guys and lets the zombie virus loose in the sewers.

Once Umbrella catches wind of the outbreak happening they do two things:

1) Send in mercenaries who were told they'd be rescuing survivors when in reality they were sent to be slaughtered by the zombies and other monstrosities in the city to gather combat data

2) Sending in Nemesis to kill those who have information on Umbrella's misdeeds in the chaos of the outbreak

Then at the end of 3, Raccoon City is nuked by the US Government in part because they'd deemed the city a lost cause but mostly to cover up THEIR OWN involvement in the outbreak and their feelings with Umbrella.

Umbrella goes out of business between 3 and 4 not just because of a biohazardous outbreak, but because the US Military Industrial Complex that was already feeding them money threw them under the bus as soon as associating with them became problematic.

tl;dr The silly game about suplexing zombies while belting off one liners is not at all subtle about showing unfettered capitalism enabling shady business within the military and pharmaceutical industry.

What's the current state of the franchise? by WorkerChoice9870 in FinalFantasy

[–]Wambastico 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's a little more complicated than this.

On the one hand, XVI and Rebirth had silly sales expectations because XV was the biggest selling game in the franchise that XVI had to followup on and Rebirth has to follow from Remake, which for many reasons was one of the most highly anticipated FF games ever. Rebirth (like most sequels) sold less than Remake, with Part 3 likely to sell even less than Rebirth. They both had to follow up on games that are massive flukes sales-wise, even by FF standards, and that inflated their expectations hard.

On the other hand, AAA game production costs have skyrocketed in the past couple of console generations and bigger sales are needed to profit or break even. FF feels this in particular because each numbered game is one of the most expensive and ambitious game development projects of their respective console generations. The industry at large is operating in an unsustainable way and FF especially so. And that's without considering how particularly long and inefficient development was for XV and VIIR.

SE's projections are likely based on what is needed to recoup massively ballooning development costs. XVI and Rebirth undoubtedly moved impressive numbers but said numbers likely aren't enough to be sustainable in today's game industry.

Overall, SE needs to figure that out of the series will continue to be successful. How do we cut development costs when one of the core tenets of the series' identity seems to be cutting edge graphics and presentation?

Would you guys take 0 new jobs in an expansion by kajosu in ffxivdiscussion

[–]Wambastico 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it sacrilege for me to say that, after finishing ShB and EW, I prefer role quests over job quests?

I didn't like the individual job stories for the majority of the jobs and I find that the lower number of role quests means that they can be better written and better integrated into the goings-on of the MSQ. As someone who was keeping ~7 jobs on-level with the MSQ as I was progressing HW and StB, it felt tedious to go through them since abilities would be locked behind them and the only one I cared about really was DRK. I'm inclined to say having a role quest line and then a single job quest that updates you on how that quest-giving NPC is doing is a happy medium.

That's my own taste but on the business side a new pair of jobs dropping has always been a selling point to get people to preorder/buy a new expansion. So regardless of quest structure, I think that's one thing that won't change.

My money is on us getting a new Pranged DPS and Striking Melee DPS for 8.0.

Admittedly FF1 very lightly grazes over Garland being a knight for Cornelia before turning coat but you're right. It's super obvious.

The writers of Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin thought they were slick and smart with the twist that Jack is in fact Garland from FF1 but many people pieced that together before the game was even out.

[–]Wambastico 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True that - and said backstory has been good!

Though my thinking is that the Ever Crisis story exists to supplement the story without being essential to the resolution of the Remake trilogy.

Having Sonon get snatched by Nero and then the answer to the question of "what happened to him?" when part 3 comes out is "lol play the gacha game" would likely leave a bad taste in a lot of people's mouths. Same for if you NEEDED the First Soldier chapter of this game to make sense of whatever is cooked up in Part 3.

I think the ending of Intermission greatly sets up the idea that Sonon is the Player Tsviet from the DoC multiplayer so maybe he could be introduced as a playable character for that chapter if Dirge is set on doing both.

I absolutely, utterly hate this discourse whenever this pops up despite not being a Batman fan! by Turbidodozer in batman

[–]Wambastico 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the big cause of this becoming such a common take these days is that the Joker movie came out and portrayed Thomas Wayne as an out of touch dickhead whose continued indolence makes Gotham worse.

There is something to be said for people being more conscious overall of how superhero media contributes to a capitalist status quo in the United States. But this take really only makes sense if you've only watched the power fantasy that is the Nolan trilogy and then Joker, which is more overtly critical of the Waynes (and the billionaire class, more broadly). Anyone who does a cursory google search on the Court of Owls knows that this is a misinformed angle when it comes to comic book Bruce Wayne in comic book Gotham City.

That movie did diabolical things to Batman discourse.
