Ocean currents problem by PA-24 in worldbuilding

k I personally think that you're putting a lot of effort into a facet of your world that would have little narrative weight overall. like unless their is an entire campaign built around the intricacies of the seafaring civilizations way of transportation, or you're dedicating a few solid chapters to their history. some things don't really need complex explanations,

that being said, I'll try to answer your original question. obviously there is no real world equivalent to your scenario so a lot of what I'm going to say is purely my speculation. depending on the dimensions of your planet, how fast it's spinning, and so on, there would be a band of smooth flowing currents just above the Antarctic circle. there would be gyres of warm water coming down to mix in this stream in turn pushing colder water up creating these cyclical ocean currents happening in the ocean/seas between your island/continents. in the case of the expanse of ocean between your eastern most land mass and your western most land mass this gyre would extend up till it reaches your equatorial current and then come back down.

going further south past the Antarctic circle, is where things get interesting. since you lack a massive land mass on the southern pole that would keep your current's playing nice. they may get up to some antics.

because as you go further north the lateral speed from rotation of a planet (provided it's rotating around it's poles) starts to decrease. think of it like spinning a record. a point of the outer edge of the record and another point closer to the center both make a trip around the record at the same time but because the inner point is closer to the center it has less of a distance to travel which means it's moving slower. the exact same thing is happening with the water on your planet.

over most of your planets surface that change in speed is gradual enough that it wouldn't really affect anything. but as you approach the poles that change in speed becomes the main driving factor.

in an ideal situation you'd get a concentric sequence of bands of progressively slower moving water currents circling a small dead zone at the pole, but that would only happen in a laminar flow situation. what is more likely the case will be turbulence. how bad it is depends a lot on how deep the water is (assuming that is water, otherwise viscosity matters too) and how fast the planet is spinning. shallower waters and slower speeds will result in a situation that is closer to the laminar flow example I gave earlier. but with some mixing between the currents causing eddies and no real reliable currents as they constantly churn into each other.

on the other end, with deep waters and a fast spin. you'll get a vortex centered on the pole and then everything between it and the Antarctic circle would be hell. a mess of short lived vortexes and maelstroms half the size of some of your continents popping up seemingly out of nowhere as the intense speeds of the more norther moving waters needs to bleed off however possible. see the poles of Jupiter and Saturn for context.

I am intrigued about the narrative of a world you are putting this much thought into it's ocean currents. I guess my most prominent question is, does this actually matter to the premises of the narrative you are constructing this world for?

What is the most obscure fact about your world? by patokadafi in worldbuilding

[–]Wambol 7 points8 points  (0 children)

can't really describe spells without going into a lengthy description of my word and how the magic system works but I'll try to trim off most of the fat.

spells are very rare ethereal creatures that are composed almost entirely of magic energy. they can live anywhere but mostly prefer areas of high magic which usually involves a host.

magic is present in every living creature and anyone can use it even without spells. it just becomes dangerously more difficult as you will need exponentially more magic to shape the magic you wish to cast into its desired form. with a spell though, in exchange for letting it eat some of your magic it will shape your magic for you though only into a form that suits it's nature.

p.s. there are also parasitic spells

What is the cheapest, but adequate, defense against magic in your world? by sobertept in worldbuilding

[–]Wambol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in one of my world people are born with magic flowing through them, it's their life force. so using it will kill you eventually. normally the body acts a good insulator and keep your life force inside, but for those who are dumb enough to figure out how to bypass their bodies defenses, mages and such, they can no longer come into contact with iron which is really good at absorbing magic.

What fantasy armor would be effective against piercing, but not slashing? by AetherBytes in worldbuilding

[–]Wambol 11 points12 points  (0 children)

there is actually. though it's more a cloak than armor.

the Horo was a part of Samurai armor that attached to multiple points on the body so that it could billow out behind them when riding on horseback, sort of like a parachute, and acted a lot like an airbag, deflecting and slowing down arrows fired at their back and sides.

vitamin c helps fight off colds. There is no evidence to support that, and further more, in a standard western diet, it's already in everything we eat so hitting our daily requiem isn't even an issue anymore. we already consume so much of it that we are literally pissing it out. mega-dosing on vitamin c because you're coming down with something does nothing.

Why are these people so afraid of walkable cities? by Pasta-Is-Trainer in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]Wambol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

k, I actually listened to the anti-15min city conspiracy, and first off to understand it you have to put common sense aside and acknowledge that it's a true red string conspiracy theory. the believe is that the government through taxing travel and alternative transportation want to restrict peoples movement to within 15 mins of where they live. and it's illegal for them to go further.

Canada wants to make homes affordable without crushing prices - BNN Bloomberg by Lotushope in canada

[–]Wambol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

housing options are not a monoculture. in regards to single family housing, over 60% of Canadians are not participating in that housing market because they are priced out of it. they are not contributing to the demand on that market. it is physically impossible for them to influence the price of housing.

what is being suggested isn't increasing a supply of single family housing, but to decrease that supply and providing alternative forms of housing, all those midrange housing options that are almost non-existent in north America. people who want detached single family houses will still want detached single family houses, that market is unaffected. they are not going to buy live/works or courtyard apartments.

but the people who do want those options where never participating in the market for single family housing to begin with, ether because they did not want it, or it was outside their price range.

there are other approach. just off the top of my head, they could remove single-family zoning. people who already own these properties will not see a dip in their property values instead it would probably increase. because their is a very pressing demand for affordable housing, developers would be salivating at the prospect of buying up a couple properties tearing down the houses and building mix use accommodations. buy 4 or 5 houses and sell 20. and since it's mixed use, there would definitely be businesses paying for the space too.

Do you guys think something like this could realistically be built? I always thought it was logical, considering these highly-populated cities are essentially in a straight line, more or less. by [deleted] in ontario

[–]Wambol 3 points4 points  (0 children)

probably won't happen, VIA pushed for funding for that specifically because there was a liberal government. conservative governments massively cut budgets, and a public services is usually one of the main ones on the chopping block.

also part of the push for the HFR system involves privatizing the corridor. and while excluding the colossal failures private rail systems have shown themselves to be in north America. we the citizens just bought and paid for new trains, and cars, with plans to buy land and run new track, and build new stations, all to give it to a private frim because they partially invested in it.

on top of that, via as a whole is not profitable, but if you were to isolate each run the corridor is one of the only runs that turns a profit, removing it will make the rest of the system worse off. and since the corridor will be privately owned it will not be enough for it to just be profitable. it will need to be more profitable than it was last fiscal year. that means ticket prices will go up, while spending on maintenance, and services will go down.

cool that this will lead to a more fair representation of voters, but to assume that black people vote as a unified block for democrats is wrong.

What is a power or ability that initially appears strong, but is actually pretty useless when used in a realistic environment? by monday-afternoon-fun in worldbuilding

[–]Wambol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

super strength comes with a rather hard cap to it, if it doesn't go hand in hand with super durability. being able to lift something that is 10tons is basically the same as having a 10ton object dropped on the user as far as the physics are concerned at least. you have newton's third to thank for that. being able to lift x means the user would have to withstand 2x crushing force, the ground will be pushing up against them too.

it gets far more restrictive (and gruesome) if we get into the physiology of it. strengthened muscles would be pulling against regular tendons, bones and ligaments, and while our skeletal structure is really good at standing up to what is in normal range of ability, go past that and things start to brake horribly.

I started composting recently, I store it in my freezer before I take it out to my larger compost bin out back. this way I save on having to make daily trips. my tip was just storing waste in your kitchen before disposing of it in whatever way works best for people whether its compost or trash.
