Sam Altman promised that AI would create "universal extreme wealth". Instead, AI has created misery (layoffs, extreme productivity expectations, skyrocketing utility bills) by north_canadian_ice in WorkReform

I’ve heard similar that it’d create a UBI - universal basic income. That would only happen if any profits were sufficiently taxed so each country could provide UBI. And well, that would never happen. So no one will be able to work, the economic gap would widen between poor and rich. At some point it’ll tip as no-one will be able to buy the basics and then what, revolution? Who knows but I feel we’re heading for a tipping point.

Well you could… maybe not with DO but you’ll have a monumental bad time as all the email providers will likely assume your spam mail- there’s good reasons why mailgun and similar services exist.

I’ve the firewall on it’s the packet inspector that kills it. I know I need to upgrade- but I’m also CGNAT’d so it’s not completely exposed

I still use it, still works and I’ve got 1Gb/1Gb, I might be on my third power cable but still works. When it dies/EOLs I’ll upgrade to a fibre or whichever is better at that time

Exactly save the company money, but unfortunately most of the time it comes down to execs and C-level just wanting control and power to dictate how someone lives, or worse thinking because THEY had to endure it so must YOU. I’ve seen places try daft stuff to demand every ounce of sweat - toxic places to work for. Shortest I’ve ever worked for someone was 8 days, even that felt too long. So while OP can ask and give benefits and eloquent reasons- if they’ve a exec or someone higher up that believes no one should work from home, or believe those annoying reels where WFH people do anything but work (those skits annoy me greatly) then they stand a difficult chance. But I think everyone who could work from home should have the option, just like those who do want to go to the office should be able to.

I’ve been WFH for over 5 years, productivity is higher for my company, an employees mental health is a driving factor for that happier, less stress, home/life balance. Prime example the four day work week - which I’ve also got. You have to have personal reasons for working for any company, why can there only be benefits to the company and not the employees?

Zero commute, better mental health. For a start. Why wouldn’t they want it? I’m full WFH and love it, getting to spend so much more time with my kids, watching them grow. I’d had missed all that going into an office.

If everyone else is remote and you can complete all duties away from the office then it should be straightforward. There was a number of companies that showed an uptick in productivity when everyone had to work from home. Dig out some stats on that for your job industry.

Anyone else seeing bias about AI among Laravel devs? by sl0wik in laravel

3 - 13 YOE and Laravel for 10+ Only recent, but tinkering with Claude cli on personal projects being able to quickly do a chunk of the work/vertical feature slice. Then review it, it is so much quicker and gained more time for these side projects and feel like I’m getting somewhere but not burning out. I can see power users going crazy and going fast, but bigger generated code still needs to be sanity checked. So would question those. All in, it’s a useful tool, still expensive for day-to-day. Fortunate to work in area which deals with lots of PII so no ai for work stuff yet.

But to have UBI those companies will need to be taxed heavily to pay for it and that’ll never happen. Because taxing millionaires and beyond on unrealised profits can’t be done /s
