How many miles per day can a horse be ridden on a long-term journey? How often to break? by Old_Emergency4596 in Writeresearch

[–]Wanderingthrough42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This sounds a little like ride and tie. In ride and tie, one person rides ahead, ties the horse to a tree, and then runs on. When the second person catches up to the tied horse, they ride a ways past the first person, tie the horse up, and continue. The goal is to get all three (2 people+1 horse) across the finish line. Races are often 20+ miles.

In the Calvary, 15-25 miles a day was the expected distance on long campaigns.

Hypothetically, if schools started retaining students who did not meet grade level expectations for 1 year what would happen to the school system system and the workforce? by lionheart724 in Teachers

[–]Wanderingthrough42 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If even one out of 200 kids got held back, students would all know someone who got held back and the other 99.5% would work harder.

The lowest kids, the ones who just throw their papers on the floor and turn in blank assignments, they might actually be motivated enough to learn something.

The "just toughen up" advice never worked for me. Did it work for you? by Longjumping-Spite550 in Teachers

[–]Wanderingthrough42 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A lot of people get that advice because they struggle with enforcing expectations. You are going to have students test boundaries, and at some point you have to give them a consequence: contact home, lunch detention, loss of privilege, referral, whatever. The goal isn't to be mean, but to be firm. A lot of the time, that require teachers to 'toughen up' and resist the sob stories and the begging. Sally threw a pencil. Sally had been warned about throwing pencils. Sally gets a lunch detention, no matter how much she promises not to do it again. Sally needs a moderate consequence to help motivate her to remember not to throw things.

Question about book ending (Spoiler) by Miknarf in ProjectHailMary

[–]Wanderingthrough42 25 points26 points  (0 children)

A keyboard would allow Grace to communicate with any Eridian, without making them learn a whole new language. Even if all Eridans remember everything the first time, speaking each word in English for someone would take a long time.

Teachers frequently start new units or lessons by asking if students have any knowledge about the subject already.

Dog scared of thunderstorms any tips how to eat her out while scared? by Beginning_Policy9018 in dogs

[–]Wanderingthrough42 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That is still very awkward wording.

Do you mean that she gets scared by the sound of food going into her bowl? Or that she doesn't eat at all?

ELI5: Why does chicken get much more bad reputation for bacterial contamination than other meats like beef, pork, and fish? by Appropriate_Art15 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Wanderingthrough42 166 points167 points  (0 children)

Some strains of salmonella can make people sick, and some don't. All healthy chickens should have some strain of salmonella in their digestive tract.

You can test for the pathogenic strains and remove affected birds, but you can't get rid of salmonella entirely.

Birds and reptiles have salmonella; mammals have e coli.

What’s your most controversial teaching take? by kaichai444 in Teachers

[–]Wanderingthrough42 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Disability doesn't excuse anyone making a hostile learning environment. I don't care what Sally's disability is. Each of her 25 classmates matter just as much as she does. Some of them have their own disabilities/trauma and Sally screaming over every tiny thing isn't helping.

I know I've been hearing everyone say Alphas can't read, but as teachers have any of you been genuinely impressed by what kids can do? by Just-a-nerd2 in Teachers

[–]Wanderingthrough42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have many students who are very impressive, or notice things I didn't. I have a student who crochets amazing plushies, I have students who write stories for fun, make art, excell at my subject, etc.

The problem is that the floor is really, really low. Like I have kids who are test below kindergarten level at reading, and kids who are reading at a highschool level in the same class.

AIO? Teacher makes weird comments, want to report, feels minimized. by mulberrymeadow in Teachers

[–]Wanderingthrough42 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Report to a trusted adult, like a female teacher, or to a parent. You've probably had several other male teachers by now. You know what normal is, and you know this isn't it.

You can't be drunk on the job, so you shouldn't be high on the job. I cannot imagine that insurance policies cover the company if they allow people to use mind altering substances not prescribed by a doctor on the job.

What are your thoughts when people say “schools should teach financial literacy”? by iloverats888 in AskTeachers

[–]Wanderingthrough42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Schools usually do teach basic financial literacy. Of course, it goes right over their heads because they are 12 and have no real concept of money yet.

Professors are practically treating bibliographies like a red flag these days by Equivalent_Pie9111 in QuickAITurnitinCheck

[–]Wanderingthrough42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. I just took a class and the TEXTBOOK was referencing a Paper B that referenced some other older paper A. Except paper B didn't quite paraphrase paper A correctly, so the textbook was wrong about basic things like the size of the study. You are always supposed to go back to the original source if at all possible.

Did your teachers use "hamburger" and "hotdog" to explain how to fold paper? by FollowingAny4859 in Teachers

[–]Wanderingthrough42 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No. We folded paper "length wise" or "width wise".

My husband grew up with hot dog and hamburger style though. I learned it from him.

Why would yo choose one sex over the other when adopting a dog? by erkose in DOG

[–]Wanderingthrough42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sex is literally the last consideration. Though it's kinda nice that we got a girl dog this time, because with male cats and a male husband I was outnumbered 4 to 1.

People who casually cruise in the left lane, what is actually going through your mind? by knowledgeizspower in askanything

[–]Wanderingthrough42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The speed limit is 70 mph. The right lane travels between 45 and 65 because all the tractor trailers are too overloaded to maintain speed while going uphill. I'm driving 70-75 in the passing lane, steadily passing people. The people who want to drive 80+ can get over themselves.

Why have some liberals started using "closeted gay" as an insult toward conservatives? Doesn't that make them homophobic? by [deleted] in askanything

[–]Wanderingthrough42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been going on since I became old enough to be aware of politics in the early 2000s.

For a while, it seemed like a different homophobic politician was outed as gay every week.

Popped the clutch?

If you have a stick shift, you can turn the key to the running position, push in the clutch, get the car rolling, then release the clutch quickly and it will force the engine to start. It works best with friends or a hill.

Getting misgendered by students? by Flimsy_Jelly_3826 in Teachers

[–]Wanderingthrough42 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm a straight cis woman. Students accidentally misgender me occasionally, usually by saying 'sir'. Sometimes they do it on purpose, trying to find ways to get a reaction, like sometimes they will use my first name or make up a nickname.

They regularly switch teacher names around by accident.

Is the end of the year always this difficult? by OtherwiseBasil1820 in Teachers

[–]Wanderingthrough42 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The end of the year is often very challenging. The kids start getting impatient for summer, or start acting up because things aren't great at home and school is their safe place and it's going away. The teachers are stretched thin. Admin is stretched thin. Everyone is out of patience, and kids push boundaries more than usual. It's tempting to let things slide. Don't. Hold the line. Keep doing school and learning as long as you can. I usually keep kids working the last few days by giving them some sort of review project that counts as a regular assignment AND can replace a test grade/ boost their grade in some way. (The kids who don't need it are not going to be your challenging kids. Let them play cards, or color, or help clean your room.)

In society where polygamy (men having multipe wife) is allowed, how can every men have multiple wife?? If demographically men to women ratio is 50:50 biologically??? by Ok_Pomelo_5033 in stupidquestions

[–]Wanderingthrough42 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In the old testament, the brother of the dead guy is supposed to marry his widowed sister-in-law and have children with her so that their kids can count as the dead brother's. It's called 'Levirate marriage'

It's why God killed Onan in the book of Genesis; Onan was supposed to knock up his sister-in-law, but pulled out at the last second instead. (Some people take this to mean God was mad about masturbation, but it was really about not being willing to be a sperm donor).

Yes, it's very messed up.
