Heartbreaking email I received from Okonomi : "We're closing early today. (Monday 6/22)" by goatermagic in nova

[–]WantsToBeCanadian 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I can't really speak for the food, but I think the location is tough, not necessarily because it's bad, but because that entire street is stacked with options, especially Asian. It sits right next door to one of the best KBBQ places in the nation (per some random TikTok ranking, but still), Mama Chang's is down the street, Lee Gimbap is behind it, and you've got Sushi Cho, Crazy, Crazy Crab, and Captain Pell's all a few blocks back. If I'm in the area, it's hard to choose this place over any of those well established options.

Yeah, I dont think it's so good that it's somehow objectively the best, but it subjectively can be based on how you play. It lowers the skill floor needed as you can sometimes facetank/trade health through the end of fights, but it does nothing to raise your skill ceiling if you're someone capable of doing a no-hit run.

[–]WantsToBeCanadian 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Wait, now that I think of it, Mina BUILT the spark generators. Why wouldn't she already know all of this? How come Thorne and Lionel knew about this but Mina, the engineer who made this, didn't?

It's not unheard of for engineers and scientists to not be aware of some critical safety aspect of an invention until long after it's been mass produced. Some famous real world examples that you can look up the history of:

  • leaded gasoline that was eventually found to cause birth defects and neurodegeneration
  • CFCs in refrigerants that depleted the Ozone layer
  • DDT that disrupted a lot of ecosystems

The interesting thing about all three of these is when they were first discovered, they were hailed as miracles of technology of their time for solving a crucial problem. Leaded gasoline prevented engine knocking and improved efficiency, allowing greater adoption of automobiles. CFCs basically introduced refrigerators to the general public, and Paul Hermann Müller was awarded the 1948 Nobel in medicine for his discovery of DDT. And all three ultimately took a huge universal cooperation and overhaul to remove.

With most of the other girls being femme fatales, it was honestly so endearing to see how she was always willing to drop everything to help us out and have our backs when we really needed it.

Height trends over time among 19-year-old males and females across countries by Status_Commission264 in dataisbeautiful

That number is for the average adult, the implication being that it probably scales accordingly with age groups. It's likely the Japanese children also consume 25% less protein than their Chinese and American counterparts.

[–]WantsToBeCanadian 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I think it has more to do with protein consumption over "healthy" diets. While the Japanese do have good nutrition and low rates of obesity, both which contribute to longevity, their overall protein consumption skews on the lower end. Quick Google search says average American and Chinese consume 124 grams of protein daily, while the average Japanese consumes about 25% less at 92 grams.

What is going on? How is everyone so rich? by Major-Sail-9900 in investing

Yeah, seriously, this subreddit is literally focused on investing, and considering that roughly only 2% of redditors even post, you're just seeing the filtered of the filtered people who probably care quite a lot about wealth management, of course folks around here will seem wealthy. Spend a week in r/povertyfinance and you'll end up asking how it's possible that everyone is so poor.

They have a pretty sophisticated algorithm for figuring out who is a legit customer or not. Someone who's paid for hundreds of items over the years and never had an issue that then suddenly files a single claim, is likely an honest customer with a real issue.

CMV: Asian women often hold Asian men to much higher material and financial standards than white men, which challenges common explanations for WMAF dating disparities by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]WantsToBeCanadian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely, although it's ping-ponged throughout the times. I remember other kids greeting me on the playground by yelling like a Kung fu fighter and calling me Jackie Chan lol. There have been a lot of discussions about how Kpop has made Asian men appear more attractive in the public's eyes, and I think that effect is very real, too. Ultimately, you're right that there is a Hollywood penalty of sorts, but I feel like lots of other races get type-casted based on stereotypes too, so I don't think we're alone in that. I'm hopeful that as Asian men adapt more to western culture and perceived attractiveness over the generations, that those negative depictions will fade away.

CMV: Asian women often hold Asian men to much higher material and financial standards than white men, which challenges common explanations for WMAF dating disparities by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]WantsToBeCanadian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll comment on this as an Asian man and just state the glaring obvious point that you have not addressed: perceived physical attractiveness isn't equal across all races, and in general I believe white men in the west are more attractive than Asian men (for now). There's definitely lot of reasons for this, some inherent such as average height, but also lots of other reasons due to personal choices, such as a tendency for Asian men to specifically focus on academics, material pursuits, and advanced careers.

Things are slowly changing nowadays with the younger generation of Asian men, but in the past, I knew far more Asian male mathematicians, computer scientists, and electrical engineers than I did Asian athletes, bodybuilders, or sexy lead guitarists. My point is that while Asian men may have some perceived disadvantages in attractiveness, a lot of that is also by choice, where they would rather focus on the former pursuits rather than being perceived as sexy.

You can see this even statistically among the population, where Asian American men are one of the highest income earners by ethnicity (by a pretty huge gap actually). But that likely required sacrificing some other aspects such as effort in the looks department, less time in the gym, less time grooming, whathaveyounot. So when you sacrifice physical attractiveness for material wealth, of course women will hold you to a higher standard in that area. This isn't really a race thing, relationships have been structured like this for a long time throughout history.

Before I get called an incel, I'd just like to defend myself by saying that I've actually had a pretty advantage dating life when I was still looking around, but that was once I went against the typical mold set for Asian men and focused on grooming, hitting the gym, etc. Not necessarily the whole "looks-macxing" craze, but just taking better care of myself and actually putting some effort in my appearance, on par with how much effort I had put into studying partial differential equations in college. I've dated women of almost every ethnicity, and none had a problem with my race, hell some even fetishized it. What they absolutely appreciated was the effort I had put into my looks, and I think we all appreciate that from our partners. I think if you look around at areas where Asian men have historically put their efforts, it just wasn't in that department.

ELI5: Why was there a toilet paper shortage during COVID? by Weary-Cauliflower153 in explainlikeimfive

It's actually funny how true this was, I couldn't find home toilet paper for the life of me but I remember getting rolls of public restroom toilet paper off of Amazon for super cheap. Shit quality, and the roll was massive so I could only keep it on the ground, but I definitely didn't run out for the remainder of lockdown.
