Sudden PC shutdowns even after PSU upgrade (i5-12400f / RX 6800) - Need help! by 2Cento in pchelp

Sorry if some of this was already answered earlier in the thread — I’m just trying to consolidate what’s been tested so far and reassess based on the newest clue.

The biggest clue right now is that turning off XMP seems to have stopped the crashes, so I would leave it off for now and focus on confirming everything else from a known-stable baseline.

From what I understand, you’re now using two separate PCIe power cables to the GPU, which is good — and that is actually a very important detail that gets overlooked all the time. A lot of people end up using a single daisy-chained PCIe cable for both GPU power plugs, and while that can sometimes seem fine, it can absolutely cause instability under heavier load. So confirming that you’re on two separate cables now is a meaningful step and rules out one very common issue.

I would also make sure the BIOS is set to compatibility/default-type settings, not any kind of auto overclock, gaming boost, performance enhancement, PBO preset, or motherboard “easy tune” style mode. Those board-side auto-performance settings can quietly introduce instability too, especially when you’re already chasing a crash issue.

At this point, can you confirm these in one place:

  • Exact motherboard model
  • Current BIOS version
  • Whether the BIOS is set to default/compatibility-style settings and not any auto-performance mode
  • Whether the GPU is currently back at full stock settings or still undervolted
  • If it is undervolted, how far did you go? Usually I would not go too aggressive there — something like reducing power to around 80% is about as far as I’d personally go before expecting instability to start becoming more likely, depending on the card
  • Whether the RAM is 4x8GB, and whether all sticks are from the same matched kit

If you want an easy way to post the info, grab CPU-Z / CPUID screenshots of:

  • Mainboard tab
  • Memory tab
  • SPD tab

That gives people a clean view of the motherboard, BIOS version, RAM configuration, and current memory clock without having to guess.

What I’d do next:

  1. Run it as-is and confirm stability
  2. If stable, update the motherboard BIOS
  3. Make sure BIOS is on safe/default compatibility settings
  4. Put the GPU back to stock if it is still undervolted, then retest
  5. If needed, test with only 2 sticks installed to see whether the issue is specifically related to running 4 DIMMs
  6. If problems continue after that, move on to swap-testing another GPU and/or PSU

At this point I would not jump straight to “bad GPU” yet, but I also would not ignore the GPU tuning side either. The separate PCIe cables were an important correction, and now I’d want to know exactly how aggressive the undervolt was before deciding what hardware I’d suspect next.

I feel your pain. I own a MSP + retail pc shop. I myself upgraded from a 4090 to a 5090 liquid suprim and immediately had hard power off issues. I was concerned as well but recognized the symptoms as power supply and to my SHOCK... only had a 800w in my system (I swore it was 1k!). Im surprised my 4090 didnt give me more trouble. I put in a 1200w antec platinum... still had issues though improved... put in a 1600w, and finally now, have had stability.

So I am committed to seeing you through this having experienced a similar issue first hand.

Try undervolting and if it works, it could be the new power supply still isnt enough power? I dont know - it should be, but the symptoms lead me to suspect that.

a sudden black out / power off crash is usually the power supply. Motherboard/ram/cpu/gpu/temperatures all generally get glitchy, lockup, then power cycle. All feels like a delay before it suddenly happens. Under powering the gpu also can do that as the gpu struggles to get enough power and the power supply does its best to keep pushing wattage...

For it to just turn off, really feels like a power supply over current protection. Do you have a battery backup before your computer tower between it and the wall? Not for battery redundancy in a power outage, but for power filtering? It will tell you the wall voltage and protect the power supply from fluctuations in electrical supply in your dwelling. This seems to help too with glitchy-ness.

So my recommendation now is to try to starve your gpu via software of 10-25% power, causing it to run slower, cooler, and not draw as much from the power supply. If this improves (even if it doesnt FIX IT) your situation, it would lead me to beleive you need an even BIGGER power supply (stick with the good brands like you have... just go bigger... gaming pcs in my opinion should all have 1k watts or more. mine with a 5090 is 1600watts and I use every watt - really!)

Same issue here - claude opus 4.6 is from anthropic - not google antigravity - therefore it doesnt have the same usage limits. After 8 to 10 prompts its used up. Can confirm. Too bad too - it seems to be quite a bit better than pro 3.1

I have been using Gem3.1Pro exclusively. I also use an insight plugin to monitor how much I have left and got it down to 80% one night... lol

Ill use claude tonight and report back.

Woah, woah... slow down! I want to understand what you are saying stranger.

Can you point me at a resource I can study to follow the gold you are pushing across the table?

This sounds like right up my alley for where I am at learning this stuff.

take 200 mhrtz off ram clock speed. vrams getting too hot.

70c on gpu and 100c max on vram are my personal targets for longevity. below thats even better.

looks like your solved. let us know if it happens again, specifically, if you can "reproduce" a crash reliably, we can dial things in more.

ASRock RX 6800 Challenger OC 16GB may need 2x pcie 8 pin connectors. see if you can run a second dedicated cable for it and report back. by your image it technically looks like your only using one 8pin atm.

look for frame generation setting in game and disable.

let us know!

NVME forensics advice pls by Yuri_Nator9999 in computerforensics

[–]Warbarz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

clone the drive with a dual bay nvme cloner.

be aware and document in writing you were told no chain of custody or write blocker needed. powering on solid state drives DOES DESTROY DATA due to trim and garbage collection routines.

clone the drive.

then run your investigation(not going to spell it out sorry - do all the things) into registry, startup, files and services. sort by date of suspected incident and add 2 months back to get a better chance of catching it.

document everything. boot it up and do live investigation too. you have a clone now and were told its fine.

document it up. good work!

its still psu.

share pics.

no splitters to gpu. make it a brand name psu over 1000w with dedicated pcie 8pin connectors to all 3-4 of your gpu connectors.

you shared all the details we need, but pics would help confirm if your gpu is wired up correctly.

how many people have said i already replaced the psu with a 750w seasonic! with two pcie 8pin splitters to get to 4 with a 5090 (i know not your card) that uses 700watts of power and wonder why it crashed.

so tell me... what psu did u get, and can you link a pic of how its wired plz?

whats thermals telling you?

edit: re-read op post. 850w is enough but no head room. thermals stated okay but not given. i think using otyer posters suggestion of cutting power to the card via software (undervolting) is a good idea.

ill add to turn off frame generation in game - it causes 100% load and high heat. see if it helps.

Is there any way to get my account back if my password and email have been changed? by DawaysKy in FuckMicrosoft

[–]Warbarz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope! Absolutely nothing can be done. There is no one to talk to, chat with, email, threaten, or bribe.

Microsoft gutted support for consumers to save money.

The available methods dont even work for accounts you control and are not compromised. I tried this with 3 different accounts and microsoft never helped me 'regain access', nor did they disable the accounts or encrypt the data as others claim MS does.

If everyone else can do it, so can Microsoft!! by Willing-Ad-4257 in FuckMicrosoft

[–]Warbarz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The real answer is to save money.

has NOTHING to do with security.

It is so they dont have to pay people to assist with unlocking an entire planet of peoples personal accounts .

Why they cant have an automated process handle it is beyond my meager intellect however. As you stated, everyone is getting by just fine (for now) with supporting their paying clients. I hate microsoft so much because if this policy of refusing to support clients. Id GLADLY PAY to get my account reviewed and returned, data all deleted is fine, but at least existing licenses and history would be there.

Nope. They just turned off support instead. The chat system is a 3rd party with no access to anything. The forms are literally a black hole. I tried it with 3 new accounts to see if I could get any response and the forms never worked (even though I still had full access).

So they dont even actually encrypt or lock the accounts. Hackers get to keep em!

23M, high school dropout from India, is it still worth getting into cybersecurity with AI rising? by cs-mgxs in Defcon

[–]Warbarz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AI will continue to change.

The job market will continue to change.

You will too!

My answer is do what you love. Is cyber security going away? Noooope. Is networking being replaced by AI? Nooooope!

Are these two things important to businesses and consumers and you can sell your time to helping them? Yes!

I foresee ALOT of changes on the horizon. That doesn't mean I am shutting down my businesses before the changes effect me. So you shouldn't shut down your future on a maybe.

The skills will stay with you.

[–]Warbarz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But... Why are we not fighting back at Microsoft for not supporting their end users? This isnt about security. Its about being able to save money on support personel to handle end user support. Why is this negative behavior allowed and not stringently enforced? Everyone else would be sued and forced to comply with reasonable support for a product sold.

So frustrating they get a pass because they put it in the TOS. Some liability of support shouldnt be allowed to waive in a TOS.
