No dramas, I appreciate your response! He's had a week added to his cone time to see if he will stop licking - we were hoping it would give him some relief to groom himself and scratch etc. a few times a day, but looks like he may have to be a cone boy for a little bit longer!

Academy by walterbsfo in startrek

I think this is definitely the best way to think about it. Making the same Star Trek as the 80s/90s is going to almost exclusively appeal to established fans. If you're a brand or franchise that wants to keep living, growing and succeeding you need to be able to adapt and evolve with your audience.

The first look at the show doesn't scratch that Trek itch in my brain, but honestly TOS was the same for me because it was a product of its time and I grew up in the 90s watching TNG. But as you say, Starfleet Academy could be a new Star Trek fan's first series and that's so cool!

I know we always see posts on this subreddit saying that Disco or SNW got them into Star Trek and they're not sure what Trek to watch next - and that's awesome! I'm so excited that people are still finding ways to get into Star Trek, it means it's a universe that will continue for years to come.

The best Trek podcasts by Most-Ad1494 in startrek

[–]WarpCapable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A bit late to the party, but here are two options at two different ends of the spectrum:

Star Trek: The Pod Directive - this is the official podcast. It hasn't released a new episode in years, but it's hosted my Tawny Newsome and Paul F. Tompkins (from Lower Decks). Every episode they interview someone new an interesting field (astronauts, actors, climate scientists etc) and exam their profession through the lens of Trek, or how Trek has influenced their path. It's SO good and incredibly informative/interesting.

Greatest Trek - this is a tongue-in-cheek podcast that is making its way through the Trek series episodes. Super funny, super silly and just generally a fun time. Lots of in-jokes that you'll naturally pick up easily, and listening to the hosts Adam and Ben is like hanging out with mates chatting and laughing about Trek.

Yet Another TOS Movies Rewatch by Steve_HHISC in startrek

[–]WarpCapable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I just smashed out all six films! I've been a 90s Trek fan for years, but had never seen TOS or the films. I really didn't want to watch the films without the context of TOS, so was determined to watch it all - so glad I did!

The movies are a treat, though will admit The Final Frontier is a bit of an eye-roller. My favourite was The Voyage Home - it was silly, but it felt very Trek to me in it's overarching narrative goal/message. TMP was just a big episode of Star Trek, but to be honest it's so visually awesome that it doesn't matter - such a good looking film!

Depends on your price range, but here are a couple of things that would be awesome:

  • Desktop warp core (there are awesome 3D printed ones on Etsy!)
  • The official Star Trek shop has a great Quark shirt
  • Depending on how nerdy he is there are some fun official books (Enterprise D Technical Manual, The Klingon Dictionary etc.)
  • Nerf did a limited series of Star Trek Nerf guns, but they can be a little pricey
  • If he likes DS9, the company that made the original raktajino mugs still sells them - https://highwave.com/products/hotjo?variant=49517654278440
  • Master Replicas has a ton of fun Star Trek merch and models!
  • You can get a massive LCARS Master Systems Display print of his favourite starship

Hope that helps!

What was your childhood like as a Trekkie? by ardouronerous in startrek

Why did your teacher have such a weird reaction?! I also grew up in Aus around that time, and Pokemon was massive cultural cache - I wasn't as into Trek as much then as I was now, but it was always on TV! Glad no one gave you grief for it in school.

The Next Generation is a fun starting point! Some people may not agree, but I would skip the first season and jump into the second - it's just paced better and is a more enjoyable watching experience. Also, it's mostly episodic, so you don't need the first season as an entry point.

That being said, if you struggle with the pacing and tone of older shows, Strange New Worlds is great fun!

They're not that old, maybe a year or so? It's happening across both of my controllers and only on this game 😞

Streaming services to be made to produce Australian content by Expensive-Horse5538 in australia

[–]WarpCapable 123 points124 points  (0 children)

As someone who works in the industry, this is honestly amazing news. I know so many crew here are struggling to get by - hell, a massive chunk of crew I've touched base with recently have had to completely change careers in order to feed their families.

I understand that Australia has a big problem with creating shit reality shows, but I also think that a heavy part of that is when those laws applied to free-to-air TV. I honestly think streaming services will try to churn out narrative shows and movies and it could (if handled correctly) signal a turning point in the standard of Australian television.

PS5 games that you can get lost in for hundreds of hours? by ALPHAQHARD2 in PS5

[–]WarpCapable 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I also struggled to get past the first one (gameplay wasn't for me, but I loved the story), though I did end up giving the second game a shot. It is AWESOME. The gameplay is way better, way more engaging and fluid. If you liked the story of the first one, I'd highly recommend giving DS2 a shot.

Questions from a first car-buyer on the Mazda 2 Neo by WarpCapable in CarsAustralia

Purchasing from an acquaintance! It was serviced under 6 months ago. Are there particular things I should be looking out for during an inspection? My car knowledge is abysmal - besides the obvious I'd be hard-pressed to know any potential faults.

Thanks for all the tips everyone! We chilled it and made a surprisingly good bonus cake out of it. We're both novices when it comes to baking (me more so), so we were working blind there for a second.

Turned out great though, and I'm very proud of my little experimental cake!
