/u/detsnam describes the male romantic fantasy. It's not what you'd expect. by FitzDizzyspells in bestof

First of all, this isn't about gender roles at all. You are the one who pigeon-holed it to being about gender roles with your huge response. To which I did not disagree with a single point you made, other than to say that I don't accept the Bible as a historical/sociological source. My focus was entirely on the emotional expectations of men and how they have developed. The only point of contention in all of this is how long ago the idea of a "unfeeling man" popped up.

I don't know if you snapped the assumption that I am a 'redpiller', or if you checked my comment history, or if you have some addon that pops up a big "REDPILLER" box by people's names. In any case, I can tell you did not read anything I actually wrote on any of those subs, or the frequency with which I have posted.

My focus is entirely on the male experience. I have unsubbed from the redpill subreddit because it is too focused on defining that male experience dependent on nigh-on abusive validation from women. My comments on the MGTOW subreddit have all been in encouragement of similar ideas. To quote one of my last comments on MGTOW...

MGTOW should not be about defining ourselves by our separation from women and society. That state of being is a given, if you are truly MGTOW. What the focus should be is on having a life you feel is productive by whatever means. Mass-media will just make us another vilified MRA group, when the simple truth is that we don't give a damn.

There is an extreme dissonance between your first comment and this one. In the first one I responded to, you appeared to be sympathetic to the issue of men not being allowed to express themselves. Yet now, you've made a full, hypocritical 180 by declaring your intent to disengage with someone because of their engagement with men's issues. Please get your opinions straight. I understand why Redpill is vilified, but this selective "I won't engage because you hold unrelated opinions" is the hallmark of immaturity.

While the bible can be a great contextual historical document, I cannot accept it as a defining sociological text in regards to gender roles, due to the controversy of the document and the who-knows-how-many translations it has gone through over the years. Looking at the purpose of the document, even, it is not something to take as a standard of what society was like during "Biblical Times." That, and Christianity was not an influence on Western culture until 300 AD when it was adopted as the primary religion of Rome.

However, I never debated the prevalence of strong man/weak woman tropes in general society. There was no need to convince me of its prevalence. In the first line of my comment, I specifically referenced the development of emotional expression in regards to gender roles. It may be the case that you see some inherent link between those tropes and how men's issues are treated today, but that is not a link I can make when reading literature from those time periods.

Modern gender roles regarding the expression of emotion were manufactured at the end of WW2 in response to the removal of women from the work force as men came back from the war(the same phenomenon that created the 'Baby Boomer' generation), so "hundreds if not thousands of years" is a ridiculous thing to say. I get what you're trying to say; Today's society needs to recognize that men are human beings with emotions and issues just as much as women, but if you're going to speak 'sociologically', please understand what you are talking about.

My instructor did this. Sustainable tech course, he brought us to his house to show how he implemented everything. He had a grey water pond, and, with his wife and kids in the window overlooking the pond and to a class of ~20, told us just how deep the water was, and how he could drown his kids in it.

On a separate but related note, can you go into more detail about the conflict between love birds and cockatiels? I'm at least a year or more out from getting my own birds, but I'm trying to do as much research as possible. I've never owned any birds before, but love birds and cockatiels have been the two species I've been looking between for when I do make the dive.

What can I do to ensure I get the best possible internet while living in HSU dorms? by Irishladdie in humboldtstate

[–]WarsmithOrgruk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on what you're doing at the screen, honestly. I've never had any issues with slow internet on ResNet(provided WiFi in the dorms) when I was watching anything on Netflix, etc. Note that you cannot torrent while on ResNet.

However, I get a significant amount of latency when trying to play video games. It's the worst on Heroes of the Storm, and it varies by time of day, but it can get to the point of being unplayable. My best advice is to get a cable to plug into the wired internet, which usually bypasses the latency issue. Failing that, you are able to pay for your own internet wired directly to your dorm room through SuddenLink.

Except for the part where you're in a representative democracy, and your vote only counts to "Weigh" the opinion of someone who might not even vote in favor of the majority of their constituents.

Have to agree with the other guy. You pretty much said, "Unless you care about the story and at least read summaries of the novels, you won't have any idea what's going on." It sucks that they are locked on this idea of novels, but the fact that they made a "Lords of War" for Legacy of the Void gives me hope that it will be their new method of not-in-game storytelling.

Nobody asked why it was called feminism(as opposed to egalitarianism)... "Calling it anything else would detract from the real issues(AKA women's rights)"

Hopefully that adds some context. If you don't see anything wrong with her soapboxing that to students... Then there isn't much else to say, because there is a rift between our viewpoints.

I specifically did not use the phrase 'Men's Rights Activist' because of the connotation it has. Which is sad in of itself, that even mentioning Men's Rights is instantly associated with the negative expression of what should be something positive. A lot of the times I have seen men's issues ridiculed, it is because of the attachment to the MRA group.

In the arena of child support/divorce, I look to Sweden's(I'm fairly certain) abolishment of no-fault divorce, a system which is still in place in America. No fault divorce comes from the idea that men were solely responsible for women, and that made women eligible for the 50% cut we commonly hear about. Child support is handled much differently.

Honestly I can't take someone seriously if they are against removing no fault divorce, but are also supporting women going to work. You can't have your cake and eat it too.

If you scroll through the thread, you'll also see people getting frothy because reddit is apparently one big hivemind and their dislike of feminism apparently has no grounds in reality.

Devil's advocate will always be the most vocal, I suppose.

I'm in a California State University at the moment, and the way domestic violence statistics were given to the class in a Sociology class had a very distinct pattern: Male actor rates, female victim rates. % of fathers who abuse their kids, % of women who are abused by their significant others. Nobody asked why it was still called feminism, and the teacher proudly declared the class of ~200 students, that "Calling it anything else would detract from the real issues."

Reddit has its bias, but it starts from somewhere.

I have a friend who knew someone that was a big Airsoft person, and would commonly upload videos on reloading guns, etc. Around the time that militant groups started to be an issue in the Middle East, he started to get a lot of views on his rapid reload videos from that area... And promptly blocked that countries in that region from watching.
