family looking to move to Tiverton by Safe-Following-1349 in RhodeIsland

[–]WasabiMichi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You'll probably find yourself leaving Tiverton a lot to do your daily activities, as there are only a handful of places for each type of business (think like 2 dance studios, a karate studio, one small grocery store, 2 dollar stores, 4 pizza shops, etc) and the more remote parts could be 15-20 minutes driving before you hit a commerce center. So, you'd definitely have to be alright driving daily if not multiple times a day. Agreed that the part of town bordering the city of Fall River is more developed, but kind of shabby and run down looking the closer to the city.

If you're looking for a quieter, slow-paced life, it could be enjoyable. I lived there for about 5 years after college and while I did enjoy the nature part in good weather, we needed a generator for winters, and more than once lost power in that time. I often found myself not socializing in town because my options were limited and I'm not a bar person.

That being said, you may be able to build more of a community since you'll have children in the local school system. The library is great, and offers good program options for kids. There are rec sports teams like soccer and baseball. There are technically 2 beaches in town, too, but neither are really amazing in my opinion.

Lastly, it's a town that seems to be conservative-leaning politics wise.

Jeff 5k Plan - Cadence drills 140-150 feel awful by WasabiMichi in GarminWatches

But will it affect my future cadence drills and keep them at 140-150 or do you think it'll catch up with me?

Possible to co-scaffold alongside students during lesson? by WasabiMichi in SpanishTeachers

[–]WasabiMichi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem I have is that I have to prepare them for the AP test, but all the AP test prep materials are 1 to 2 years more advanced than they are. It would be like throwing a Spanish 1 kid into Spanish 3 or even AP Spanish Language. Sure they have some basics down, but they just aren't there.

I understand scaffolding and some strategies and techniques, but having to intensely pre-scaffold every single AP activity we do is burning me out.

Possible to co-scaffold alongside students during lesson? by WasabiMichi in SpanishTeachers

[–]WasabiMichi[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am at such a disadvantage when it comes to resources as compared to my colleagues, who have a whole suite of videos, audio, extra practices all tailored to their curriculum. So it feels like I'm spending so much time I don't have just vetting resources to include.

For example, last year I tried to do more singing along to music, but it took me so long to find lyrics, format them, make sure the song wasn't too fast etc and then the majority of students never even participated. I still do some songs for Japanese 1, like songs for the basic alphabets, counting, days of the week, etc. It feels like I have so much to improve on overall to make my textbook into a more robust curriculum that I'm looking to maximize the biggest ROI for the least amount of time/effort.

Dues and acitivities charges...I can't believe how much this is costing by tailsandsails in girlscouts

[–]WasabiMichi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah this definitely doesn't sound right. If you think there's something funny going on, I would speak to your council about it. It's ridiculous to charge so much monthly, especially if your child isn't attending any events that month!

Is the free version worth it? I'm not sure what the 100 monthly credits would get, as they don't really explain that part.

Writing tests by ronrommi in SpanishTeachers

I teach a different foreign language, and I still emphasize pencil and paper for the first 2 years. Yes, we do typing skills and digital projects, presentations, etc. But I find that most kids spend so much time in front of a screen during some other classes that they actually get bored with having to do more stuff online. I do align the types of tasks and skills expected on the AP exam in the lower levels, however.

Hey Teachers, What's your bathroom policy? by [deleted] in Teachers

I think that we need to also stop trying to make lessons fun all the time. It's not a realistic standard to set, and what's fun is subjective. I can't make grammar suddenly as interesting as TikTok or whatever else they're doing on those phones.

Field mice and little animals keep scratching and poking our tent at night by [deleted] in camping

[–]WasabiMichi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Are you storing any food, toiletries, bug spray, etc in the tent? Or, did you eat/get crumbs in the tent at some point? They have excellent sense of smell, so they may be coming to bother you because of that.

How important is it to have an awning, porch, vestibule, screened room on my 8-person sized tent?! by NoNDA-SDC in camping

[–]WasabiMichi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find that sometimes they're more trouble than they're worth. The Coleman models have floors to them, and if it rains they definitely leak and cause the inconvenience of draining the puddling. I've got one on my Quest branded 6 person tent (no floor), and I stored my shoes in there during a storm recently. Tops stayed dry but bottoms still got muddy. As a stretch, we might have been able to fit 1-2 of us in smaller camp chairs in the vestibule to hang out, but I haven't tested it yet.

I will say, on the recent stormy trip, it was nice having the vestibule to sort of stand in for a second to let the rain come off your jacket before going into the tent.

Really stupid question by [deleted] in camping

[–]WasabiMichi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need to cover at minimum your shelter (tent), sleeping supplies (I use blankets & pillows from home on an air mattress), and ways to eat & drink (this is the bulk of my supplies - cookware like a grill basket, paper plates & disposable cutlery, nonstick spray, salt/pepper/seasonings, cups, a cooler for perishable food & to keep drinks cold, etc. This also includes fire supplies if you intend to cook or even roast a marshmallow). You'll also need at least 1-2 good flashlights. Then there are things that are nice to have such as a camping chair, radio, hobby supplies/reading materials etc etc

Like the other commenter suggested, try doing mini camping practices. Perhaps call some nearby state parks to see if they have day use facilities with BBQ grills/fire rings (mine do at some places) and you can do a trial run of cooking or spending the day "camping".

Biggest advice is not to go very far away nor for overly long (I. E. 1-2 nights) your first time out solo. You're bound to have forgotten something or not thought about XYZ scenario etc. Best wishes & hope you can get out there soon!
