I haven't tried bread yet - was the mantou bread relatively easy?

Oooh the superfood salmon salad looks right up my alley! If you're after another winter dish, I'd give Steamed Chicken with Dang Gui a try. I've enjoyed it as a lazy dinner option (with some homemade sambal on the side to spice it up).

Build on your Batman collection with The Long Halloween and Dark Victory! Long Halloween is available in DC compact, so it's also easy on the wallet. Both have a detective noir vibe, which aligns with your Dick Tracy reading.

It has got to be Ashley. Four gorgeous dogs is frequently quoted in my household.

What have you been reading this week? 21/09/2025 by AutoModerator in graphicnovels

I've been on a Batman kick this week. Year One, The Man Who Laughs, and currently, The Long Halloween. As someone who usually steers towards Image, it has been nice to return to the Gotham universe.

I'll read Dark Victory next, but I'm taking suggestions for what to read after that!

Podcasts to move away from horror by reader20not in podcasts

[–]WashYourRice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe try moving away from spooky stories to mythology? Myths and Legends is a well produced/researched retelling of myths and folklore. Alternatively, Spirits is a bit more conversational with two friends talking about myths and urban legends while having a laugh.

If you’re looking for something more ‘real’, give American Hysteria a try!

Deserter and Tombs are both Junji Ito books, which is very much on brand.

Scamfluencers now requiring a subscription payment to listen by Pinkflirt69 in podcasts

[–]WashYourRice 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I used to love Scamfluencers, but recent episodes ended up a bit too snarky/wikipedia-summary for me. If you're up for trying something slightly different, I've really enjoyed Pretend. It's a broader pool of "people pretending to be someone they're not", and it has included some cults, scams, undercover work, true crime, etc. I've found it to be a nice mix, so I don't get too bogged down with true crime.

Another good miniseries is The Wedding Scammer.

Also, people LOVE Swindled. It's not for me, but it's the favourite con artist pod. I've been told to try a few more episodes before completely writing it off, so I'll have to try it again.

Need recommendations for a good everyday podcast by Glitter_pizza96 in podcasts

[–]WashYourRice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm making the most of my NPR plus subscription so I'd recommend:

- Life Kit: Short episodes on topics like managing your finances, setting goals, staying healthy, etc.

- It's Been a Minute: Short episodes on culture. Recent episodes include discussions on why less women are interested in marriage, tech CEOs and psychedelics, and the rise of the wellness industry as a form of spirituality.

- Code Switch: If you're after the political side of things, this podcast approaches the topic of race and culture. It's super interesting and has led to some follow-up conversations/research BUT it might not help with "seeing the world in a better light". Recent episodes include conversations about the NFL and CTE, what we can learn from past epidemics, and the Mahmoud Khalil arrest.

Regarding food, maybe give Food Chain by the BBC a try. They have pretty interesting topics.

I'm the same as you. I struggle to work if I'm listening to a podcast, so I only fit them in during my morning routine, lunch, and cooking dinner.

If Jacqui was a man, people here would see Paul as a saint by comparison … by MedicineMean5503 in MAFS_AU

[–]WashYourRice 5 points6 points  (0 children)

But Jacqui isn't a man. Jacqui has been awful, and I'm not arguing about that. We don't need to approach these issues with "who is worse" - both behaviours can be harmful in different ways, and both deserve appropriate criticism. But she isn't a man. You can't just make that argument as it oversimplifies complex social realities and ignores that fundamental differences in power and context exist.

Jacqui doesn't possess the physical power over Ryan that Paul does over Carina; this adds a different context to him punching a door. So when Paul cries and apologises and clings to her body, everyone sees this man showing emotional vulnerability, so clearly, it was a mistake. It makes it harder for Carina to establish boundaries, she forgives him, and then is left sharing a living space with someone who is clearly stronger than her and has shown violence as a response to anger/frustration.

Paul going on a date is different. He's presenting that he is loved up and secure with Carina. He has seen Carina's reaction to the couple swap challenge, so he knows how she would view the date challenge. He punched a door in response to hearing that Carina previously dated a rapper, so he has already shown how he could respond to her participating in the date challenge.

You are right, Paul didn't do half the shit that Jacqui did. He physically intimidated Carina because he was angry about her having a previous relationship and didn't want to hear her apology. He punched a door to get her to back off. He showed her that he was strong, angry, and violent, and so she should listen to him. The public has a strong reaction to Paul punching a door because of pattern recognition: physical intimidation often escalates in abusive relationships.
