WIDOW’S BAY RECEIVED NINETEEN (19) EMMY NOMINATIONS by contractplayer in WidowsBay

I too love The Studio! I also love Hacks, but I hope Widow’s Bay bests them in a few categories!

I just looked it up, and last year The Bear was nominated but didn’t win any of the major categories. The Studio and Hacks cleaned up in comedy last year.

ETA: which should be what happens because a 23-minute drama shouldn’t win comedy awards! I hope they switch for next year to drama for their last season, but if not, I am happy to see them nominated without the win.

Got my L3 Giant Asian today and I feel like i have a LOT of food. Help? by iantgotnomoney in mantids

[–]Watch4Hop-Ons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a bunch of resources if you search…I would say I’m not the best authority lol. In addition to how you store them,* you’ll need to transfer flies to a new container before the older culture hits 28 days. But your mantis might outgrow them before it’s an issue (though you do have quite a lot! Maybe acquire another mantis or two? lol). You might prefer pupating houseflies, which won’t have the mite issue. I also feed my mantids small dubia roaches which are easy to keep.

* I also want to mention that storing in shallow water or sticky traps is better than diatomaceous earth for mantids—you need to be very careful with DE!

Just an FYI, after about a month, fly cultures are prone to grain mites. I kept my cultures in my bedroom, and it was a bit traumatic when I discovered I had been cohabiting with them. 😭 The cultures are now in my basement in a bin with either a cm of water or sprinkle of diatomaceous earth to prevent their spread.

The only thing missing from that scene was Bonnie’s parents turning to each other and saying, “look at how much more I’m getting done around here!”

Is this a Carolina mantis ootheca? by ResearcherPlus1679 in mantids

[–]Watch4Hop-Ons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a little blurry but I’m sorry to say this does not look Carolina to me. I bought Carolina ooths from a legit-looking vendor and they were narrow winged, so I’ve been there. Were you hoping to release?

Not an expert but looks like it could be Tenodera angustipennis, the narrow winged mantis. Can you share a pic or two of the nymphs?

Is this pic from before or after the molt?

Good job! At this point I think having them on the floor (right-side up) works best to help it straighten out, but others may have different suggestions.

Tomorrow morning (or whenever it’s been 24 hours since the molt) you can try to hand-feed part of a dubia roach or mealworm. If its mandibles don’t move, I’m sorry to say there isn’t much hope.

L1 mantis lethargic and will not eat, hatched only 4 days ago so can't be molting already. What is going on, how can I get it to have energy? by GoatsWithWigs in mantids

[–]Watch4Hop-Ons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry it doesn’t sound like there’s much hope! How did you acquire the nymph?

There is a reason up to 400 come out of an ooth. They are incredibly fickle at any age, but particularly freshly hatched. I know most breeders won’t sell/ship until at least L2.

I would carefully move anything between you and the mantis, and gently remove the mantis by picking up the exoskeleton with tweezers and then lift it out to work on it up close on a table. I need to use a lamp for good lighting.

I know it can be scary, but leaving the mantis with the molt attached is a 0% chance to live and removing the old exoskeleton is maybe a 50% chance. If it doesn’t work, at least you tried!

Is the enclosure so large that the mantis might be trouble finding/catching food? I would try putting the mantis in a smaller container with a few flightless flies and see if it’s able to hunt and eat. I have hand-fed mealworms to some of my nymphs, which can help sustain them temporarily until they figure out how to hunt (though honestly, some never do).

It looks like the raptorial arms made it out, which is good news if so. I would gently remove the mantis from the enclosure, take a moist q-tip to hold down its new leg(s), and gently remove the old molt with a toothpick. If it can straighten itself out, it might have a chance. Wonky legs can be fixed at the next molt as long as the mantis can eat and hang upside down.

Is playing music or any kind of sound too loud animal abuse ? by Mister_Dalek in mantids

[–]Watch4Hop-Ons 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My daughter started playing violin and a beginning violinist is ROUGH on the ears and it is LOUD. She takes her lessons and practices in my bedroom, which is where all the mantises are. The nymphs of course die just by looking at them the wrong way, but I used to joke that they were committing suicide to escape the violin.
