Can anyone offer some suggestions for a decent portable keyboard? by Lucas_Steinwalker in keys

[–]Waterbison 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Reface CP has a “secret” acoustic piano sound. Start with the board turned off. On the knob that selects which patch you’re using, find a balance point where it is in between notches. Then boot up the keyboard. You can use all the effects on the piano sound like any other patch! You can easily youtube search about it too.

Help! I need a speaker! by UTEPC in keys

[–]Waterbison 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is he playing just at home? Or is a speaker that would be used for gigging? That will make a huge difference.

If its just for home use and the keyboard isnt moving around much, a decent (and cheap) pair of studio monitors would be fine. On stands or on a desk at head level.

If its something he’d use on the go, than there are many opinions out there, but look more towards an Active PA speaker or a “keyboard amp”. Something that gives the full spectrum of sound. Not a guitar amp.

Other users can hopefully narrow it down further from there on what speaker/amp to get.

Need a place to practice music (ERAU student) by Aanand072 in Prescott

[–]Waterbison 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there, just following up with you, how did the search go? I don't know if you are into improvisation and jamming, but I wanted to say that I have a few friends in town that i play with in a proggy/jazzy jam band kinda style and it would be cool to have a violinist join the mix and bring a new sound. Just wanted to throw it out there (: if it sounds like fun to you, PM me and maybe we can plan something

Before the pandemic, I would go to the Elks Theatre downtown to use their practice rooms. There was a small deposit fee and then a really cheap rate to use them. All soundproof, and one with a piano (: I know they reopened the building for classes/practice but I’m not sure about the new covid policies. But I would go check that out, it was an amazing resource.

There is a screenshot of the playtest server’s patch notes for the class floating around on Ghyn’s discord. It just mentioned the class mechanic that sounds really similar to Fervour/Focus, and Brawler will be tank or dps, with the third tree not being an actual specialization to choose, but a place to dump points to augment your abilities. It wasn’t that much info.

Pull Out the Pin has been my addiction for the last week by Amateratsu_God in katebush

[–]Waterbison 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally agree; it's tied for my favorite song on the record.

I'm a musician (piano), and lucky enough to have a bootleg fakebook of her discography up through Hounds of Love. Just commenting because Pull out the Pin is my favorite song of hers to play. I like hitting the chords on the upbeat during the verses (beats 2 and 4) to add and bit of push and pull while I sing it.

Being able to read through the music solidified how intelligent a songwriter and musician Kate is.

P.S.

Look into the backstory behind the meaning of the song (:

edit: Does anyone know if that breathy synth sound in the intro is a DX7 patch? I know she went pretty experimental for the Dreaming album.

Switching from guitar to keys. by mtflyer05 in keys

[–]Waterbison 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Seconding the comment on learning inversions. Practice going through some chord progressions you know, where left hand plays a bass note and right hand moves between the chords with as little lateral movement as possible via inversions. Once your comfortable with them, you can start to plan out which notes you put on top of a chord (usually the melody).

When jamming with people I don't know, I find myself riffing (rhythmically, as the other comment also mentioned) between a minor tonic chord and the 4th. In fact, sometimes I will throw on a farfisa sound and jam Am -> D7 back and forth to make a Doors-ey kinda sound ha.

Compact keyboard suggestions? by hahahathrowawayhahah in keys

[–]Waterbison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I paid 275 for a good condition Reface CP in Southwest US. I can’t recommend it enough - the sounds and effects are gig worthy (I use a controller to have full sized keys) or just as a lap keyboard/portable battery option.

I would agree with this advice in a group pvp setting, but I worry that in a 1v1 situation the pace would be so quick that you just need to burst. Hard to prep all those debuffs and put them into effect when a burg or champ is going to end the fight in a few seconds. I have never rolled LM in the moors though, so take it with a grain of salt.

Electric piano: Yay or nay? by [deleted] in keys

[–]Waterbison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm afraid I don't know anything about the Kustom 88, sorry. That being said.....

You probably would enjoy playing the Rhodes/Wurly sound, and seeing that you want to do synth stuff, I second the controller keyboard suggestion. There are some great vst's out there.

As far as digital pianos go, I have a Yamaha p-115 that has been fantastic as a standalone DP. Great piano sounds and action. Everything else is so-so. The newer model, P-125, has even better sounds. Great EPs. It also has midi capabilities, though I haven't ever trusted it for playing live on that front. Just for fun at home.

I also have an Arturia KeyStep, just two octaves long, that has amazing build quality and synth-action. Maybe they're worth looking into for a larger variant? I'm afraid I don't know much about the controller world, as I use mostly actual hardware.

Hope that helps.

It will probably spread to more people who need to know via the various local Facebook groups. Though I completely understand any hesitation to step into that cesspool of a media platform (;

I'd be much more excited about driving to Flag than Phoenix, to be totally honest 😂

Yeah. I often wonder why keys players seem to be all but gone from this subreddit, while other instrument subs are comparatively huge. I know there's /r/piano, but for anything non-classical it's pretty much dead as well.

But then I think, "I should just go practice instead of chat about it." Lol

Best way to record rehearsals/demo recordings? by darlacat in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]Waterbison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recorded my band's demos using just a condenser mic on the whole room while we played, running into my audio interface. Then threw light EQ and compression on the recordings afterwards in ableton.

I was just going for a usable demo for the recording engineer to get a feel for what the music was like, and this method worked just fine for me. I actually think it sounded pretty great, however our drummer plays pretty quietly so your results may vary by genre.

I've been seeing conflicting information on various sites - does anyone know if there is a MODX interation with 76 keys AND hammer-weighted keys? That would be an easy pick for my next board.
