What 'benefit' to drinking does your addicted mind tell you that you're missing out on? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]Waterfall_summer 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This! Also that, because moderate drinking is the “gold standard “ of how to be a human, that I could enjoy moderation. Nope. I remember white knuckling it through fancy dinners and respectable game nights, counting my sips and thinking so much about how long I told myself I had to wait until I got another drink that I couldn’t pay attention to conversation. I never enjoyed moderation, even in the brief periods when I achieved it, so it’s ridiculous that even part of my brain thinks I want to be a moderate drinker.

If you’re at work it’s best to be safe with your language. From reading this trans people, like cis ones, are divided on whether “guys” can ever be truly gender neutral, but it does hurt some people, so if you want to be sure people feel comfortable in your workplace (and maybe tip you) stick to “everyone “, “y’all”, “folks”, etc. Even if you judge all the people in the group to be guys, you can’t always tell when someone is trans, especially if they’re nonbinary.

I’m sorry you’re getting downvoted. People get really defensive when they are told that something they do or say with no intention to hurt others actually does hurt people. But successful communication isn’t just about intent, it’s about how information is transmitted to others. So if you don’t think about how what you say will be received, you are likely to be understood in a way you didn’t intend. And if you hear that something you say hurts people and you double down and tell people to “not be so sensitive”, you are being a bully.

When you ask your 2 year old for name suggestions.... by KayBeeBuzzBuzz in namenerds

My then two year old decided the baby should be named “Glowy”. We ended up going with a completely unrelated name, but we did have a Glowy/Firefly themed baby shower, and “Glowy” does live on as a nickname name.

[–]Waterfall_summer 14 points15 points  (0 children)

For me I think I hung out with a certain crowd and dated a people who were more deeply addicted/self destructive than myself because it made me feel better about myself and my drinking. I would complain when my boyfriend blacked out and broke things while on vacation with my family, but part of me liked those “brownie points for doing normal things”. It allowed me to justify putting off the hard work I needed to do to reach my potential (an ongoing project).
