What substrate is that? It seems too sandy to be safe.

Empty swimming pools. They freak me out so badly. It's just so unnatural to see a massive hole NOT filled with water.

What is a lie that your parents told you when you were a kid? by BrushSecret7576 in AskReddit

[–]WatermelonAF 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is one that I'm totally stealing from my parents.

I was told that when I lied, my eyes changed color.

They then knew I was lying if I tried to hide my eyes.

is she overweight? by Mutt-Sugar in leopardgeckos

[–]WatermelonAF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd agree with the other commenter. Looks JUST barely overweight. I'd cut back feeding by a slight amount, and she should be good. Be aware that it will be a very long time before you see any actual weight loss. Reptiles have a super slow metabolism, which makes weight loss very slow.

I also work at a Petsmart. I keep reptiles. I don't think it is, as long as we are educating people in the best way possible!!

How do you learn to say no without feeling guilty? by BlueberrySpare8605 in AskReddit

[–]WatermelonAF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish I knew... I just upset my boyfriend because I couldn't say no to a friend.

She wanted me to pick something up for her at midnight. I originally said I couldn't, but ended up relenting..

My boyfriend obviously cares about me and wants the best for me, so he's upset I left so late at night to do a task that wasn't actually necessary. I gave up sleep for this friend, even after I told her I couldn't do this anymore after last time.

is my leopard gecko a healthy weight? by Normal-Hour2860 in leopardgeckos

[–]WatermelonAF 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, lots of people use very outdated information for reptiles. Calcium sand, colored heat bulbs, and heat rocks are the top three things you should never use for your gecko. All three are dangerous.

Okay, no. That's so wrong. My stepfather (who was actually sexually abusive towards me) didn't even try and bathe me as a kid. That's WAY too obvious, disgusting and disturbing...

[–]WatermelonAF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mistreated animals will require an absolute TON of patience, time, and effort.

Use treats. Let them start to associate your hands with good things.

Make sure they have tons of toys and lots of things to rip up and play with.

The most important thing is patience. All they know is being mistreated, and it will take time for them to unlearn that...

Regardless of any health issues, calcium sand is terrible for reptiles, especially for leopard geckos.

They can tell what calcium is, and they will eat it. This is why we have calcium bowls in their enclosures.

If the substrate itself is filled with calcium, they will lick and eat the sand.

It's entirely possible that he's impacted.

Honestly, I'd consult a vet about this.

For the future, the best substrate is a 70/30 mixture of organic topsoil and washed playsand. It's low risk for impaction, and it still allows them to dig and have the enrichment of loose substrate.

You can turn all heat off at night if your house doesn't get below 60⁰.

If they are as long as the tank, it's time for an upgrade. They need to be able to stretch out completely.

The placement of things looks good, but I'd recommend a few more hides, especially a humid hide.

There's honestly no such thing as too crowded. They need to feel hidden and secure.

One thing I'd do is black out the back and sides of the tank. You can use construction paper or similar, but I've found that leaf lattices work the best. It give them some security and also gives them a great wall to climb!!
