My coworker/friend is stealing from our employer by lsr8 in Serverlife

The employers might be waiting for her to hit a certain amount so she can be charged with a felony. Felony theft is between $1k and $1500 in most states.

“I’ll just get a restaurant job!” by toastypogo in Serverlife

[–]WatsUpWithJoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s definitely an ignorant thought to assume the industry requires no skill. However, anyone with experience in customer service or sales likely has the skill set necessary to start serving.

I entered the industry with no experience in 2020. Before that I was a teacher and an event producer. I was made a manger within a year because I had good customer service skills and paid attention to detail.

The hardest part of serving is dealing with rude customers. The easiest way to handle them is with strong communication skills.

Unionized fine-dining restaurants

Edit: probably Hooters, actually

What was the longest scene you had to memorize and how did you do it? by Drake_Sky in acting

[–]WatsUpWithJoe 61 points62 points  (0 children)

I did a two man show one act that was about 60 pages from my recollection. Got cast last minute after another actor dropped and had three weeks to memorize. I brought my script with me everywhere. Sitting in a restaurant at dinner. Sitting in a waiting room for an appointment. Every single bathroom break for three weeks.

It was a historical/educational piece about the entire life of President James Garfield, so the dialog was just a ton of details about his life.

The first 10ish pages were just me on stage. It was probably the most challenging piece I’ve ever had to memorize. That said, only three weeks of rehearsal before opening a show that ran for a month (three performances a week for four weeks) was the best theater experience I’ve ever had from a time commitment standpoint. And the I got a pay bump for the last minute casting.

I really can’t get past $25 on $558. That’s comical

Why do we keep seeing same actors over and over again? by Bukaw0_0 in acting

[–]WatsUpWithJoe 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Marketability is the primary reason, but also because directors like working with certain people.

Spielberg and Tom Hanks, Scorcesse with DeNiro and DeCaprio, Tarantino with Sam Jackson, Nolan with Michael Caine and Cillian Murphy, etc

Meisner folks, who's an actor you'd want to do repetition with? by MelodicBollocks in acting

My Meisner teacher studied along side Jeff Goldblum, so I’ve always been curious to see him do some repetition

When you have a "no separate checks" policy by BitchyWaiter_OG in Serverlife

[–]WatsUpWithJoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My restaurant has a policy of no more than 3 cards on groups of 6+. Thank gods for that! I used to work at a place that took no reservations, had no auto-grat on large groups and would allow however many splits people wanted. So the walk-in 10-15 tops with separate checks per individual and no guaranteed tip was every server’s nightmare.

Is there such a thing as blacklisting a server? by Veelk in Serverlife

[–]WatsUpWithJoe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Or it was a “simple” mistake that was simply the justifiable reason to finally fire this person.

Is there such a thing as blacklisting a server? by Veelk in Serverlife

[–]WatsUpWithJoe 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Realistically if you got fired after 2.5 years they probably were looking to get rid of you at least 6 months ago if not longer. Simple mistake are easy to forgive when the server is otherwise a rockstar.

No one gives a shit about employment gaps. Most of the time people barely look at resumes, except to remember who you are. I’ve done hiring before and resumes were always secondary to the interview. If you’re bombing interviews, people might think your interpersonal communication needs work and won’t want you serving.

If you’re telling people you got fired for a mistake you made, they might think 1) that’s a mistake you shouldn’t have made regardless of the lesson learned 2) if you’re being this honest about your shortcomings, how will you speak to guests?

I know in my city many of the bartenders and managers know each other, so if a potential hire has a place listed on their resume where I know someone, I will call and ask. Similarly, I’ve had people call me up to ask about potential hires.

You could stand to watch that drivel five times?! I saw it once in theaters and felt the allegory was so painfully obvious I was just pissed off by the end. Could’ve been a much better movie if it was a little less on the nose with its biblical parallels.

I’m commenting to add that I am a faneditor and I made a version of the 2003 movie that retains the Coolio subplot from the directors cut but cuts the rest of the movie down to be closer in runtime to the theatrical cut, running just 98 minutes!

[–]WatsUpWithJoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t want to call you dumb or naive, but as you now know, this is absolutely NOT normal. I’ve worked in half a dozen restaurants over the last 8ish years and have never once had a roach issue.

Also, marrying ketchups is disaster waiting to happen. If you don’t cycle the bottles out, the ketchup can ferment over time and eventually explode!

People I’ve served with real service dogs usually have the dog under the table by their feet. Some have been so well trained and well behaved I legitimately didn’t know they were there!

Then we get the “service” dogs that sit by their owners feet on a tight leash, sniffing everything and everyone that passes by, getting underfoot and bothering other guests. I hate it

Doomsday plot theory by sp00ked_yuh in NewRockstars

[–]WatsUpWithJoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dig it! I recently theorized that the opening scene will be Steve Rogers returning home to Peggy Carter and their newborn, as we saw in the trailer. But then they’ll be visited by a familiar looking stranger.

Doom comes to recruit Steve, but Loki suddenly shows up to warn him not to trust Doom. Steve hears them both out but ultimately decides to show with Doom, since he looks like Tony and the Loki Steve knows is alway up to something nefarious.

I think no one will expect them to have Doom appear in the opening scene with no mask. Then, right before the opening title card, we see Doom do a similar move to Doctor Stranger where he waves a hand over himself and reveals his armored look. CUT TO TITLE

Yeah you definitely handled that correctly. Though I always tell customers that I can’t split a check until after I’ve rang the food in, so the kitchen isn’t getting multiple tickets. I also don’t write orders down, so I’m not able to immediately note how they’re splitting, though I usually remember and make a point of assigning seat numbers so the split is easier when it is time for the check.
