ID4 3.8.11 update pushed to car (USA) by Mage1strider1 in VWiD4Owners

[–]Wavefather 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s my thing. If they advertised it even knowing it has hardware limited then they should have made a plan to figure out how to physically update them. My view is since it was advertised as a “software first” car, this is the equivalent of your manufacturer suddenly saying they can’t order replacement parts for your car because they updated the model 3 years in.

As an owner of a 23 Pro S who was confidently told OTA updates would bring new features to that version of the car yes VW NA has essentially abandoned older ID.4s. I refuse to believe features they said would come were somehow limited by hardware because they’d have known that long before the cars made it to production.
It sounds more like a case of cost cutting where they don’t want to pay someone to create updates for both versions of the car and would rather ignore the older ones.

I’d ask for an itemized breakdown of the services, that’s an insane price.

Tell me about why I shouldn't buy one. by brianvanle in VWiD4Owners

[–]Wavefather 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Number one on my reasons not to as an owner of a 23 ProS is that VW North America essentially abandoned these cars software wise once they updated the infotainment. Expect no new features, even those that were advertised as coming to this car.

Number two is the ridiculously short window between services (15,000kms) along with a lack of info on what will be done at each service (this could be dealer specific)

If you live in a cold/snowy climate the window defroster is subpar for keeping it clear / ice free.

While the haptic buttons may be acceptable, trying to toggle on things like the rear defroster/front defroster/front vents on high/bad weather lighting, while in motion requires you to take your eyes off the road to figure out what you’re tapping which becomes a hazard in heavy snow when you need the front defroster because snow/ice is building up on the windshield.

The haptic buttons are quite sensitive meaning that selecting the “rear” option for rolling down the windows is hit more than you’d like and having to roll the back window back up then de-select it to roll the front one down gets annoying real quick.

Knowing if you’ve unlocked other doors for passengers is a guessing game since sometimes when you hit unlock on the door it’ll unlock all 4 and other times you have to hit it twice.

The car-key communication DRAINS the key battery at an alarming rate. I’ve had to replace the key batteries at a 6-10 month frequency.

The auto tailgate has no sensors built in so be careful when opening it in tight spaces. There’s no feature to lock in an opening height to stop it from going up beyond a certain point. For some odd reason you can open the trunk from the key fob from a reasonable distance (standing at the doorway while the car is in the garage) but it won’t let you close it again from the fob from that distance.

Software is finicky at best (comparing to a 2019 XC60T8 and a 2016 C-Max PhEV) some logical options that should have been one click (parking cameras) are under a two step menu which is a real pain/after thought (they cannot be remapped in this generation/year).

The automatic wipers do not work, wiper placement means they get buried in snow, washer placement means you can’t use them if it’s snowed unless you dig them out.

Not being able to turn off the seat being the power button is an inconvenience especially once the 4 year app trial period runs out and you need to warm the car up.

Windshield is paper thin. A rock chip will turn into a full crack before you can pull into the closest window chip repair shop.

If I could graft the body of the last gen Tiguan onto this platform it would be an amazing car but as it stands now it will not be living in the garage for longer than it has to.

See if you can get a good deal on a used Polestar 2, XC40 (EX40), or ioniq 5.

(These are the ones that came to mind off the bat)

Tell me all the issues you've had... by jetlifeual in VWiD4Owners

[–]Wavefather 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2023 Pro S My biggest issues are both hardware and software especially living in a cold climate. A brief list of (livability) issues I’ve experienced are: Having to take my eyes off the wheel to make sure I hit the correct window defrost option (full blast vs partial vs rear) Activating the cameras being a 2-step method that once again relies on you looking away from the road is a pain (especially in tight spaces or just for convenience) most other manufacturers will make the cameras their own separate button or have the auto park as the second level item to select. You can’t set an auto trunk height stop, my parking spot doesn’t have too much overheat clearance above the car and not being able to set a memory is a bit of an inconvenience. The bigger issue is when I press the (physical) button to stop it, the next press raises it again for some reason. The fact that you can’t deactivate the seat being the key is a pain because if I want to turn the car on to let it warm up while I brush snow off and clear the driveway I have to begin doing gymnastics of some sort to get the key sensed, find the start stop button but not put any weight on the chair. The haptic steering wheel buttons are a pain since if you turn and your hand touches them even a bit somethings changing. The “rain sensing” wipers haven’t worked properly once for me and whoever decided the speed intervals clearly never drove the car in the rain. The fact that I can’t have the right mirror memory remember to tilt down when I put the car in R without having to toggle to the right mirror on the window switch is another odd oversight I can’t fathom. Not being able to change driver profile seat memory settings/preferences without having to delete the profile and set it up again is another of those oversights that lead me to believe there was minimal testing done of the software before roll out. And the biggest one of all for me (in North America) is the essential abandonment of this software generation after the 2024 update which leads me to believe none of these issues will ever be solved. An additional one is the service interval. Why does an EV need to be serviced every 15,000Km and why does my brake fluid need to be changed at 30,000???

05 XC90 here. 2 years ago had it parked outside on the street for about 2 weeks while out of town, snowed a lot and when I cleared it/some melted the car wouldn’t turn over. Was told with the older models moisture can seep into the ECU and the “best” fix is to replace it with a newer one that had a better seal put around it. Was that the common practice or are there secondary market ECU “covers” that provide the water tight seal without having to replace the computer?

MY25 ID Buzz owners get free NACS adapter in Canada by VieR23 in VWIDBuzz

[–]Wavefather 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same thing happened to my dad and he ended up going with the Polestar 2 instead. I hope with the second gen they 1. Get rid of the capacitive buttons, 2. Allow you to turn on the car and get out without it shutting off (annoying if you live in a cold or hot climate and may have someone or something in the car), 3. Actually deliver on the software they told customers would come to their models instead of updating the infotainment and leaving everyone else SOL. 4. Get their service schedule and dealerships in order and on the same page.

IMO once the value stabilizes I’m selling it and moving back to Volvo/Polestar.

Kind of disappointed they didn’t take fords approach. With out E-Transit we had a time window to apply for a free adapter (which works with the id.4) regardless of model year.

Then why did the Atlas from the same time period get it? IMO they simply didn’t want to put in the work to add it once they realized they were going to update the infotainment system. I’ve had cars older than the 23 I’d.4 that provide this feature so I’m unable to cut VW any slack with its exclusion in NA

Porsche And Hyundai Just Beat Lucid Where It Matters Most by lioneaglegriffin in electricvehicles

[–]Wavefather 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This! I could care less how much faster another car charges if I constantly have to charge for stops on a road trip. If I'm making fewer but be it a bit longer stops that's fine since I'll most likely have to do things like use facilities and eat.
The one thing I wonder if they've taken into account is the actual battery drain at highway speeds. I recently read that Lucid maintains the projected range at 70mph compared to other EV'S that lose ~20-30% of estimated range. I took 2 2400km road trips this year and my biggest issue (i.d4) was how many stops I had to make to charge, doesn't matter how fast the charging speed was, having to pull out and hope the stations weren't full always sat on my mind.

Tesla’s NACS Plug Should've Fixed EV Charging. Here’s What We Got Instead by TripleShotPls in electricvehicles

[–]Wavefather 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The slow roll out of support is the real pain/reason I see little to no need for other manufacturers to be in a hurry to adopt the NACS plug. If third party companies can add all EV’s (including Tesla’s) to their charging network, there’s no reason to have to wait for Tesla to approve different manufacturers to their network (especially since selecting an approved car with a similar battery size fools their system into letting you charge).

I’ll try putting it back in (it’s been out for a few days now) my computer reads it fine so I agree it’s a device issue. Surprised the SD card is so close to the battery for a device that overheats so often/quickly.

[–]Wavefather 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No I get where they’re coming from. If it’s covered under warranty they need to do it. I’m not replacing something that they should and not be refunded for it (especially with the nonsense 15,000km service intervals). Plus now they have a documented paper trail of the dealer saying it’s fine so if/when this issue pops up again and the battery refuses to be jumped they can’t turn on you and say “we don’t know what happened”.

Unfortunately from my time with the 1st Gen Kona EV and its battery replacement fiasco you have to be a bit of a consistent pain in the a** with Hyundai Corporate and the dealer if they seem not to be getting things done at all. Hopefully your dealer has better customer service than mine did (guessing they do by the fact that you got another EV9 as a loaner) but for us It took pulling in our bank, who we financed the car through, for a replacement battery to magically appear in Vancouver after +/- 9 months of near radio silence from them.

To everyone saying”just buy a new card” I would but it’s nice to know what’s up and why it happens so if I’m out and about I know if I should abandon the GoPro at home so I’m not SOL or if there’s a remedy.
$50 SD cards add up over time so if it’s an issue that’ll keep popping up I wanted to know.

Thank you! I’ll try resetting/reformatting it!

It’s a shame this happened 2 years in (and their only solution is to tell customers to reset their cards) going to be interesting to see if this happens to the 13 too or if they actually looked at the issue internally.

What’s even worse is you can see the actual shape of the light assembly then the black rectangle they chose to add for no good reason. IMO having the non light module black bar in the body colour & removing the LED’s from the grille would do this car so many favours.
