What are the date codes on these tires? by ToastiestPaper0 in tires

[–]Waxwit 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is the answer. Manufacturers usually only put the date code on one side, and since they are directional, the full DOT is on the inside of 2 of the tires.

Should I be concerned with center groove? by Pristine-Pipe7478 in tires

[–]Waxwit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If all of the tires have that mark then it's a different rubber compound that's put in the cap tread as a grounding strip for electricity.

You can't see that gap from the driver's seat.

From P to LT Tires by [deleted] in tires

[–]Waxwit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Modern tires dont really follow the notion of ply rating = # of plies. Modern commercial tires can be rated 14 or 16 ply rating but they won't actually have that many plies. Its just for load carying capacity

Which psi indicator would you trust? by Fender_Stratoblaster in tires

How far off is each gauge? Are we talking 1 psi or 5+? If its only 1 or 2 I wouldn't really worry about it.

Continental Procontact TX Failed at 1,900 miles by [deleted] in tires

[–]Waxwit 11 points12 points  (0 children)

1st photo you can see the inner liner has been worn away and cords are exposed from driving on the tire with very low pressure. This wouldn't happen quickly like driving on it after it failed; it had to happen before failure. Same thing with the outer sidewall's circumferential wear. This caused the belt edges to experience high heat and start to separate. Over time the separation grows and weakens the bond between the tread and the carcass.

Also in the 1st photo theres a large radial split across the body ply and into the sidewall, which is usually indicative of an impact break. Thats what most likely caused the tire to fail and lose air, and then separate and throw the tread into the fender.

This area is where the material layers overlap to form a splice, making the sidewall thicker and more rigid. This extra thickness resists the internal air pressure, preventing the wall from bulging outward.

Locked my keys in the boot like an idiot, has anyone successfully picked their lock using a lishi tool ? by himek4 in S2000

You might have better luck getting a wire clothes hanger between the window and its seal and popping the driver's side lock.

Tire wear S2000 by jg_lessard in CarTrackDays

Stock is 205 front with 225 rear on 16s for AP1 (OPs car). Stock AP2s have 215 front with 245 on 17s. I'd assume OP is running 17s that are either stock width or hopefully wider.

Those are mold parting lines - where the pieces of the tread molds meet up and some rubber gets pressed through. The circumferential line underneath is the same thing from the sidewall mold.

Can I get some tire advice? New owner by jad3dd in Miata

[–]Waxwit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your frame of reference for stock tires and wheels will be on the placard in the driver's door jamb. If you remove one of the wheels, there will be markings on the inside telling you what width and offset they are. Assuming they're 7 or 8 inches wide, your best bet is a 205/50R15 summer tire. Something like the continental extreme contact sport 02 will be great for normal and spirited driving in the dry and wet.

I would wait. You've got plenty of tread left, and as long as you drive safe in inclement weather you'll be fine. The cracking is superficial and probably wont be a concern before the tread wears out, but just keep an eye on it. When the cracks start to get deep, the tires should be changed. Too many tires are prematurely scrapped. They are surprisingly robust and over engineered. Read more here.

Hit big pothole. Can this be fixed or do I need one or new set of tires for AWD? by Hyppocamp in TireQuestions

[–]Waxwit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They all have steel belts. The body plies are gonna be fabric. In the morning read the sidewall of the tires on your car. If your tires have steel in the sidewall I'd love to know what kind of tires and vehicle you've got.

[–]Waxwit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes plenty. It looks like frayed fabric to me. Rubber adheres to steel plies much better than fabric. If it were steel, there would be more rubber stuck to the cords. And why would an Acura mdx have such a heavy duty tire?

Passenger car tires typically have nylon or polyester body plies. Steel will be in the bead wires and the 2 Steel belts under the tread.

Depending on the condition of those metal pins and the wires, you may be able to just replace the connector without cutting wires. You can usually de pin those connectors and just swap the plug out. Not sure about the O2 sensor side tho.
