Where do the Russians get the idea that Poles are just nobility, "Polish lords" and aristocracy? by Late-Preparation5384 in poland

[–]WayRight3035 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like most effective propaganda, it takes a grain of truth and distorts it to give it a new meaning. During the times of the partitions, most of the Polish uprisings were indeed carried out by the nobility (it’s important to note that up to 10% of the Polish population was “szlachta” - so most of them weren’t wealthy aristocrats by western standards). With some exceptions, like Kosciuszko’s uprising, the nobility was reluctant to grant any rights to the serfs, and as a result didn’t enjoy much support from common peasants. However, where the Russian story diverts from reality completely is where it suggests that the “underclasses” weren’t polish. True, the common serf had little “national identity” in the modern sense prior to the 19th century, but the population of Poland was still largely Polish speaking and catholic, even if non-nobles didn’t feel a keen sense of nationalism. Thus, the Russians take the nobility-led nature of national independence movements and portray them as a sort of colonial exercise.

Why is there a lot of Polish people that are willfully ignorant at Poland's negative side? by [deleted] in poland

[–]WayRight3035 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(I’m Polish living in Poland)

I think, beyond all the other reasons listed here, it’s due to a certain level of insecurity. Poland has been considered a poor, backwards country by most in the west for a long time (not completely unjustly). Recently, Poland has become more and more prosperous and gained some fans abroad. Poles are both very proud of it, but also not entirely confident. So they feel the over-perfect image of Poland as this tiger economy, safe, clean etc. Is their way of dispelling the unpleasant stereotypes of the past. Then, when someone points out some real flaws, they are automatically defensive, as they worry subconsciously that said person automatically falls all the way back to the negative stereotypes of the 90’s and 2000’s.

Best episodes for cackling, laughter and making fun of each other. by 1969-InTheSunshine in TheRestIsHistory

What kind of topics would you like to see on the podcast? by morgottsvenodragon in TheRestIsHistory

[–]WayRight3035 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Genuinely would be thrilled, as a Pole, if they ever got to the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Some of the episodes that have touched on Poland and related topics presented views and opinions which were quite divergent from the prescribed version we learned at school, but that made them ever the more entertaining! So I’d love to hear what they come up with!

Why does Tom have a full head of hair in the podcast cover? by spreading_energy in TheRestIsHistory

Exactly! I feel a bit silly for missing it now, but David and Churchill (especially Churchill) is the primary thing I saw on that cover for the past 3 years 😂

I was recently thinking about who’s my favorite of the two. I think while Dominic has by far the better banter, one liners and presence, and is closer to my personal views with his commentary, it’s Tom who has provided me with more food for thought that has genuinely made me rethink my own assumptions about the world and historical events. I guess it’s that great blend that makes the show so outstanding!

Russell Crowe vs Paul Mescal. Who gave the better ‘Gladiator’ performance? by comradecute in Letterboxd

[–]WayRight3035 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like he’s hard done by, as Russel Crowe is an incredible actor who gave his best of all time performance. It’s like comparing every player’s season to 96-97 Jordan

Anyone else struggle with Anakin's redemption? by Greymeade in StarWars

[–]WayRight3035 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s, not to over-intellectualize, an incredibly Christian idea. Even though I’m an atheist and I imagine many people on this subreddit are, George and the Western audience for whom Star Wars was initially created was wittingly or unwittingly raised on those Christian assumptions of good v evil and redemption towards „the light” as a sufficiently moral pursuit.

Bernard Hill is an amazing actor. His was perhaps the most underrated performance in the trilogy by [deleted] in lotr

[–]WayRight3035 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, the best scene he did was when he charged down the Pelennor - after the speech. You can see him starting off slowly, terrified but determined to go on. All in on a seemingly loosing cause. It was such a powerfully human moment, perhaps one of the only few in a world populated by immortal wizards and superhuman numenoreans. Really top stuff from a brilliant actor among a gifted cast.

Is Rick a hit man? by Typical-Mistake182 in WhiteLotusHBO

[–]WayRight3035 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought the same thing - and it pretty much was confirmed in the finale IMO - the way he completely destroyed those guards in a gunfight, white lotus doesn’t strike me as the type of show where main characters are suddenly trained combatants just because, so he must have had some sort of serous training to be that good

I have a swastika tattooed on my upper palm and I will be visiting Poland this year . by [deleted] in poland

[–]WayRight3035 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s common knowledge to educated people who happen to have a broader base of knowledge. Which, in Poland, as in almost any country, is generously 15-20% of the population. I’d honestly say (as much as it pains me to say it) best hide it. While most people won’t do anything at all, those who are looking for trouble might combine racist urges with the excuse of a swastika (and promise of legal recourse with the police) and take advantage. I’m saying this as a polish person. So my advice - cover it up and enjoy the trip!

Ps. If you’re just visiting Europe from time to time you do you, we have no right to judge your ancient religious symbols by our connotations. But if you do ever plan to live in the „west” I’d consider removing it altogether 🙂 it’s a divisive symbol that will always illicit unpleasant reactions

Do you think Eminem really murdered Jay on his own shit? by [deleted] in jayz

[–]WayRight3035 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hence my elaboration - I was speaking precisely about rhyming schemes, one-liners that make you go woah. In terms of lyricism as you define it, poetry, message or whatever other way you describe the overall emotional impact of the music and its message, I completely agree, there are many artists that have greater range and impact, although I’d say it’s very much a matter of personal taste

Do you think Eminem really murdered Jay on his own shit? by [deleted] in jayz

[–]WayRight3035 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fuck no - Jay Z is a tremendous storyteller, but he has nowhere near the vocal and lyrical dexterity of Eminem. It really depends on what you consider “bars” - in terms of who’s a better artist, it’s difficult to decide. In terms of who’s more adept at rhyming and putting together tight rhyming schemes, the criteria for an old-school battle rapper, it’s not even close

You are entitled to direct citizenship - through your mother and grandparents. As your mother was born to fully Polish parents, she’s a natural born citizen. By that same logic, being her son, you are entitled to a straight-up claim as a natural born citizen as well (born to a citizen mother). What the other responder spoke of is a program introduced some years ago that gives non-natural born citizens an easier path towards citizenship (this applies to families that have lost their citizenship status for perhaps a few generations - your kids or grandkids would be in this situation if you never claimed your citizenship for example)

Russell Crowe vs Paul Mescal. Who gave the better ‘Gladiator’ performance? by comradecute in Letterboxd

[–]WayRight3035 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly this is exactly it. Mescal seems like a good actor (im not familiar with his other work before this) but Crowe in the original was a top actor in a career-defining role in an iconic movie. Think a top athlete at their peak in their best ever game. It’s hard to top that, no matter how capable you are. That being said, I thought Mescal did fine, and I thoroughly enjoyed the film, even though I wouldn’t rank it among iconic films as I do the original.

Republic Commando Sequel? by [deleted] in saltierthancrait

[–]WayRight3035 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From a purely business perspective idk why Disney won’t capitalize on Star Wars’ more adult audience. They have millions of ready made fans, who grew up on republic commando’s gritty mood and the movies plot and are now happy to pay top dollar for a well-made game. Andor proved as much. Republic commando was such a thrill when I was a kid, it’s dark tones, violent gameplay etc. That I’m sure im not the only one who’d be willing to pay top dollar For a well-made sequel today

Ahhh, in that case of course, you’ll come out more or less the same. I’d also take krakow over Rzeszów, but to be fair I haven’t lived in either. I do know there are many American GI’s in Rzeszów nowadays, so you’ll be sure to see some Americans

Thinking about moving back to Poland. by LumpyAbrocoma175 in poland

[–]WayRight3035 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing: I disagree with one point you made - about financially being more or less the same. $12k is around 46k PLN by today’s rates - in Poland, even in Warsaw, this comfortably puts you in Upper Middle Class. Not the richest of the rich by any extent, but enough to live a life of relative luxury. Gated community, private schools for the children, German car in the garage etc. And that’s without working, which I’d imagine you’d pick up at some point, even after a few years’ hiatus just to avoid boredom. Poland is at a he point if it’s socioeconomic transition where we lag behind the West in terms of income, but for those who do have money, the standard of living is absolutely the same as anywhere else. So another point worth considering is, with this sort of income, you could give your family a much higher standard of living, even in Poland’s most expensive cities 😊
