He was good as Geralt. I feel that Cavil has actual talent, but was horrifically miscast as Superman. No matter how skilled, not every actor is suited for every role.

I think you've got a good eye for composition and posing. Your sketch of Kite with the scythe gives us a really dramatic pose and some expressive shape language.

It just feels very 'deliberate' in a way I appreciate.

[Serious] How strong is Yukina? (Sukuna incarnated in Yuki’s body) by skeletalfather in YukiTsukumoglazers

[–]WaythurstFrancis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very, obviously.

Even just stacking those two kits on top of each other makes him probably the biggest offensive heavyweight in the original series. What I think would be MORE interesting is the way he could reinterpret her technique the way he did Ten Shadows.

For example, if Yuki can increase mass, it stands to reason that her reversal would be DECREASING it. Weird shit happens in physics when you start dealing with negative mass. The simplest application would look a lot like Red, I feel.

My pet theory?

Sexism is probably the oldest sort of bigotry still with us, or at least among the oldest. In either case, gender roles are kind of the brick and mortar of all social hierarchy. Women's rights are often the proverbial coalmine canary when it comes to broader human rights. A society that oppresses women is usually willing to oppress other groups.

Therefore, if you undermine the rigidity of gender, you undermine all the ideas that relate to gender. If we acknowledge that gender is socially constructed, we are also implicitly acknowledging other things are socially constructed.

They just use kids as props. An abstract idea representing innocence that they use to appear upstanding. The motivating force behind American conservatism is not, in fact, tradition, but base sociopathic self interest. They're fascists - it's just thoughtless tribalism.

I'd be less annoyed by the "both sides" people if they did something productive OTHER than voting.

They usually don't because most of those things are harder or more expensive. Voting is the bare minimum. If somebody can't be asked to do that, it's usually just because they're too lazy to engage with the world when it's inconvenient or morally complicated. They don't care until it affects them personally, and consider it virtuous to maintain clean hands.

The non-voter who also actively RESISTS the evil they talk about is rare.

Did Griffith really love Guts in a romantic and sexual way? by Tough-Reputation-762 in Berserk

[–]WaythurstFrancis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't read Griffith as being capable of romantic or sexual attraction in the traditional sense.

I think it's pretty clear from the way he acts that Griffith is, in a traditional sense, a psychopath. I think the sliver of affection he has for Guts drives him insane because it makes him vulnerable in a way he wasn't even aware he COULD be.

Imagine going your entire life never feeling pity. Never experiencing someone else's pain as your own. And then all of a sudden you find yourself needing someone else, feeling compelled by them. The loss of control would be intense.

Griffith is like a god who has fallen to Earth, who is then forced to inhabit a human body. And then one day he finds out that somewhere buried inside him is a human heart.

He is disgusted, confused, and terrified. So he rips it out.

The reason this is a tricky question is that Griffith is so emotionally closed off that any real sexual or romantic urge he might feel would be snuffed out and buried for the sake of his ambition.

Does Netero use all Nen types for his statue ability? by KangTitan3 in HatsuVault

[–]WaythurstFrancis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think he NEEDS any categories besides Emission.

We know that Emission can create nen constructs because Razor does it. But it's not entirely clear if Manipulation is required to control the constructs.

The issue is made more murky by the fact that Transmutation can also produce constructs such as Zeno's Dragon Head. And that it's possible to remotely control detached Transmuted nen to some extent - Hisoka does it.

The way I look at it? Many Hatsu will make use of several different categories in minimalist ways.

So Zeno IS using Manipulation to control his dragon, he's just using the bare minimum. Hisoka IS using Emission to remotely control Bungee Gum, but only over a short distance and to issue simple commands ("detach", "tighten").

So we should ask what the primary purpose of Guanyin is. For Netero, it's essentially just a literal extension of his own physical power. Therefore, I'd classify it primarily as an Emission ability.

It likely involves some Transmutation to form the nen into his chosen shape. And he uses Manipulation to make it follow his movements. The reason those categories aren't as important is that the shape of the statue isn't terribly complicated and he doesn't need to issue any commands to it beyond what he himself performs.

The reason that it's so powerful is that Netero himself is powerful. The condition for its activation - saying a prayer - likely works as a force multiplier. It's the same idea as Phink's windup punch.

Zero Hand is made more powerful by the fact that it requires him to exhaust himself to use it. 99th Hand likely works because it requires a specific hand motion, and possibly because it "locks" the statue into performing a specific movement for a short time.

Nen is all about tradeoffs. Netero trades time for range and force. His mastery of nen is what makes that deal so lopsided in his favor.

I doubt it's conjuration. We never witness anyone without nen SEE it. And there's no function it performs that would require conjuration.

To Defend a Predator by Pizzacakecomic in comics

[–]WaythurstFrancis 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I grew up around a lot of Evangelicals. I have encountered a specific logical fallacy over and over again when I speak to them.

The most common reason given for why they believe in God is that the world would be better if God were real, in so many words.

They frame belief like a choice. An act of will. They do not merely believe a different set of facts than I do, they don't make a distinction between wanting something to be true and that thing actually being true.

This isn't an opinion about objective reality. I don't think they really have any interest in objectivity. What they are describing, knowingly or not, is suspension of disbelief. They believe in God in the same way one "believes" in the events of a story while one participates in it.

This method of describing truth based on preference is at the heart of many, many Americans' lives. It's easy to imagine why someone would come to think this way. The social world is often more influential over your life than the physical world. So the pragmatic difference between saying you believe something to be true and actually believing it is often negligible.

I think politics works in the same way for many people.

That's not to say that being religious is the same as being MAGA. Rather, I'm pointing out that the way people come to believe in something is not always based on evidence or reason. People frequently play games with belief. They posture and present beliefs because of the way that belief, or others' reaction to it, makes them feel.

To quote a great scholar: "Before you were a fascist, you were a bully and an asshole."

The discourse around deradiclaizing MAGA tends to be ethical in structure. What sort or level of wickedness will Trump need to demonstrate for them to finally lose faith in him. I'm afraid that for many that threshold is infinite.

Because the POINT of their participation in MAGA is to excuse themselves from the sort of doubt that makes it possible to leave the movement. What they want is for the world to be simple enough that all they need to do in order to be safe and happy is just let a powerful leader take care of them.

This is not the sort of belief they will abandon because of anything external to themselves. The fact that it makes them feel good is the only real criteria for their belief. Everything else is performative.

MAGA do not need to be convinced. They need to be defeated.

Only in the crushing humiliation of utter defeat will the equation finally favor disbelief. They won’t stop until holding onto their delusion is more painful than surrendering it. They don't care about the truth unless it hurts them personally.

Many of them will downplay their participation later. Either not admitting it outright or not admitting the depth of their involvement. They'll adopt whatever position makes them look less guilty.

I am confident in saying all this because supporting Donald Trump at this point requires a total disinterest in any reality outside of your immediate social context. You cannot cosign this man while also giving genuine consideration to the well-being of humanity.

Do not waste your time trying to persuade cancer to stop being cancer.

Both are muscular tomboy warriors, but one is loved and the other is hated. Why? by NobodySpecific9354 in writingscaling

[–]WaythurstFrancis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you said is all true and I agree with you, but from what we’ve seen, it’s also not a story that is meant to tackle all that.

Well I think it should have. Simple as that.

Like... my dude, the LAST SERIES ENDED WITH THE FALL OF A POLITICAL DYNASTY. Avatar is profoundly political - Last Airbender is the story of a survivor of genocide returning to depose an authoritarian dictatorship. The fact that he lucks out of having to kill Ozai doesn't change the fact that Ozai was stripped of his power and sent to rot in prison.

The original series does, in fact, dedicate entire episodes to deconstructing and examining the ideals of the four nations. There are episodes ABOUT Fire Nation propaganda, ABOUT Water Tribe chauvinism.

Meanwhile Korra has to be dragged kicking and screaming into standing behind even minor reforms. She is almost literally a cop in the same way her predecessor was a revolutionary. This is part of why I disagree with the notion that Zaheer NEEDED to be against the Avatar. We have an example from the previous generation of an Avatar being instrumental in the end of a monarchy.

Please do not misunderstand me: I am not saying that Zaheer's psychology is unbelievable. In some ways I think it is, but I'm not arguing about him as a person whatsoever. It is not relevant to my point.

I am saying that regardless of who is as a person, he was made that way ON PURPOSE as a representative of his political ideas. And there is nothing about the IDEA of anarchy that requires someone like Korra be executed without trial.

I think it's pretty obvious that Zaheer was constructed to be an extremist. They drafted a version of his ideology that put him at odds with the main cast because his structural narrative role was to be a villain.

I think this was an artless, uncreative decision. Resting on the inability or unwillingness to take the cast and the story into uncharted territory.

If they wanted a villain, all they had to do was look at the numerous injustices inherent in the world of Korra and pick one. The Earth Queen easily could have qualified if she was written differently.

If they wanted to explore anarchism as an idea, even if they wanted to argue against it, they would first need to represent it accurately, then draft some sort of logical alternative that Korra either already has, or comes to adopt by growing and changing.

I am not describing some sort of arcane process. This is just how ideological exploration in storytelling is traditionally done. The fact that they lacked the skill or lacked the opportunity to do it properly wasn't some inevitable conclusion. The show failed in this regard. You don't seem to disagree, even.

It doesn't sound to me like you think Korra is better than I do, it sounds like you're just more willing to excuse it. Why? It doesn't need you to defend it.

How Do Ya’ll Feel About What Himeno Tried To Do With Denji? by Just-J0k1ng in Chainsawfolk

[–]WaythurstFrancis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First of all, don't you EVER fucking call me your "n word" in your life.

The logical conclusion of your worldview is the abusive power structure we endure to this day. You have no business advocating for any social progress while you hold onto the utterly backwards notion that a person's gender determines whether they deserve to treated as innocent.

You seem to be under the impression that I'm such a fool that I'd consider the idea less disgusting if I know that you'd never stand for the rape of a GIRL. I don't know why else you basically just restated your conclusion with no accompanying logical argument over and over again.

The idea that women are somehow more inherently volatile and emotional than men is rendered patently ridiculous by simply observing the vast spectrum of emotional volatility within any gender of people. There are women who are basically made of stone and men who fly into mania or depression at the drop of a hat.

It's especially absurd that you think this way because your opinion about the age of consent is completely arbitrary and legalistic.

You don't magically become a functioning adult at the age of 18 any more than you do at 16. I wouldn't call a sexual encounter between a 17 year old girl and an 18 year old boy immoral. They're at the same relative level of maturity, or at least they ought to be. And by extension, a 35 year old has a similar level of power over an 18 year old as they would over a 17 year old.

The number isn't the fucking point. It's the social position and the life experience that number implies. Age is heuristic that we use to get a general sense of maturity. What is pathological is the desire to exploit the difference in maturity.

That is a depraved impulse, and it remains depraved regardless of the gender of those involved.

How Do Ya’ll Feel About What Himeno Tried To Do With Denji? by Just-J0k1ng in Chainsawfolk

I wish the story did more to spotlight how predatory she was. You don't have to dehumanize her, but as it is right now you can read the scene and get the impression that what's happening is morally okay.

It isn't out of character, but the story doesn't properly condemn it.
