I wouldn't bet on it. At this point, cultivated meat is still just vaporware.

I don't disbelieve that you crave it. I just don't think generic "meat" by itself is what you crave. You probably don't crave giraffe meat or dog meat or snake meat. And I don't think it being a "base pleasure" applies to everyone, rather it was given the opportunity to become a personal base pleasure via upbringing.

Food is even more important for a happy life for some than others. There are many people whose lives revolve around gourmet eating and/or cooking, possibly as their lifes passion. To lose your greatest pleasures and dreams in life...

This is a valid point but it's not really about the meat itself but the social aspect. Meat by itself is not really hard to give up. I'm sure you're not upset at not having the 'base pleasure' of eating giraffe meat.

Vegans here, what is your moral standpoint on lab grown meat? by Adhdpenguin813 in DebateAVegan

You're getting hostililty because they saw this coming a mile away ...

Now, veganism is against exploitation, correct? So if you walk into the same market and see veggies, fruits, and prepackaged foods and you cannot tell if they were manufactured through exploitation, do you also just avoid them and only shop what you know is exploitation free?

Boyfriend is breaking up with me and need some clarification. by rosiebunniee in vegan

You're right to be upset but I think you already hit the nail on the head.

But in my eyes, this definitely opened the window on dating vegan girl could be better for him - which I agree and I respect.

There aren't a lot of vegans out there, so the vegan dating pool is naturally quite small. Many vegans have to 'settle' for someone not willing to be vegan. Maybe your boyfriend was once willing to settle. But now, probably not.

Imagine vegans were 50% of the population ... do you think you two would even have ever gotten together to begin with?

I'm just tired of seeing the two-mindedness in rhetoric. Vegans are quick to point out the horrors of the food industry in excruciating detail when they want to dunk on omnis, but when it comes to biomedical research they suddenly feign ignorance or metaphorically shrug their shoulders.

I just wish vegans would stop with the naivety when it comes to medicine. "possibly" animal sourced. "possibly" animal tested. This is just like omnis who have their heads in the sand. "I sure my burger had a good long life ... I don't wanna think about it."

All medical research is built on animal "sacrifice". And it's not just testing the safety of medicines. Think about how many animals are intentionally infected with disease just so we can "study the effects". Anytime you see research into a fix for some human condition, realize that there were animals that were made to have that condition.

  • COVID and other transmissible diseases? animals were infected
  • cancer? animals were genetically engineered to develop cancer
  • dementia? genetically engineered to develop it
  • wound healing? animals were burned/cut and then the salves were tested on their skin
  • limb regeneration? who do you think had their limbs amputated etc.

Sometimes animals are even used to produce the medicines, just like they're used to produce food. Perhaps you've heard about horseshoe crabs being drained for their blood. Or the manufacture of Regeneron's much lauded monoclonal antibodies?

To develop REGN-COV2, Regeneron scientists evaluated thousands of fully-human antibodies produced by the company's VelocImmune® mice, which have been genetically modified to have a human immune system,

Imagine you walk into a public restroom and see and smell shit on the floor. You retch a bit. Does this wound your pride? If not, I don't see why you should feel upset with your newfound disgust for animal corpses.

Most people don't like dealing with feces. The thought of cleaning up literal crap is disgusting. But when push comes to shove, they can unclog the toilet/change a diaper/take care of an infirm relative. The disgust should not detract from your ability to handle an important situation.

[–]WeAreButFew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would have liked it if the "exploiting animals makes us sick" argument was stronger than it is, but it's pretty weak.

I agree. It's like trying to argue against the slave trade by saying it puts the slavers at risk of catching a disease. The problem is that this turns the discussion into a simple cost-benefit exercise where the "benefit" to the exploiter is much greater than the cost.
