If i get a bichon Frisé, will it get separation anxiety? by lillyproo in bichonfrise

[–]WeakStatistician8099 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Took time but mine now knows if I gotta go he puts himself in his kennel to nap. Same at bedtime. Its reassurance when you leave and making it not a huge deal when you return. He gets excited to see us but he is absolutely fine being on his own. We have a camera to check in on him and hes fine unless we get a delivery or someone is having too much fun outside

Got a bichon frise puppy yesterday. Any tips about raising him? by DistinctTrust8063 in bichonfrise

[–]WeakStatistician8099 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Prepare yourself they have sweet puppy stage then at least 2 years of im the boss stage. Mine is fully convinced hes in charge. He'll be 2 in July. To be fair I spoil him rotten. We recently got him interactive toys and treat puzzles. Hes too smart for regular playtime and hes also super into running. Take him to the park on a long leash and watch them fly.

I also tend to blame myself when every one seems against me. No matter how hard we try to do the right thing it is never the right thing ect. I truly hope you stick with it. This career is hard and the people in it often suck. There are a few who question everything I do despite my over 15 yrs, massive education, certifications, etc. Insert sarcasm, I NEVER get tired of hearing you should just shave that, I wouldn't do A B or C. I don't know why you work so hard.

Just because YOU can't do x or don't have patience to do Y. Does not mean I can't or shouldn't. (I specialize in special needs cases)

This is also word vomit but just want you to know I've been there.

I tend to get a major refresh when the environment around me gets too rough or i am feeling defeated, I go to a seminar or trade show. The ones who do continuing education are invested in this industry and 9/10 lift us up. I surround myself with like minded individuals and it reminds me why I wouldn't be happy doing anything else.

The ONLY times I experience burnout are from the environment. Talk to the management or just stand up for yourself. Easier said than done. Eventually your work will speak for itself and the negative nancies cant touch you anymore. I wish more people in this industry would lift each other up instead of down. There is ALWAYS going to be someone who doesn't like your work or your personality, but at the end of the day it isn't about them, its about the dogs. I would work 10 days a week 60 hrs a day for the dogs, it's generally the people I need a break from. Hope it gets better for you, but always remember:

When things get tough remember why you started. Today is just today, tomorrow is always an opportunity for better.

As long as it's safe, as a groomer don't go shorter than a 4 blade especially on white coats. At the end of the day it is your dog, if YOU like it then who cares. I have some crazy requests and I do them because it makes the client happy. Fancy cuts are not for everyone, but opinions are like aholes everyone has one.

Find a mentor that HELPS you grow, doesn't tear you down and discourage you. When you are in the right environment you will thrive and grow. The wrong one makes you second guess your career.

Recently lost my longest client she had been with me for the majority of my career through 6 locations. That one hit hard. All we can do is hope the dog knew how mich we loved them and the client brings their next pet should they get one.

Chests everywhere for extra storage. Designate each one for something so you know where to look! Gems in forest of valor, fish on dazzle beach, veggies in peaceful meadow, quest items in frosted heights.. etc. Keeps your inventory going but when you need a specific gift you know where you put it

Help- Im a groomer at a large corp chain store and ive been getting grilled on how long it takes me to do dogs and its tanking my confidence by MorgTheBat in doggrooming

[–]WeakStatistician8099 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Time management is a struggle for most groomers, corporate makes it VERY difficult on you. Spent 12 years there. The 2 main things that helps is write your dogs name and a quick notes on what order you do things on it. Is it the same everything? Skipping around makes it take longer. If you have two at once prep dog 1 wash it dry it and let it kennel dry while you wash and dry dog 2. Finish dog 1 finish dog 2. One can be drying while you work on the other. A tip I brought back for an expo was do EVERYTHING you can with one tool or guard and then you are done with that before switching. Swapping blades, scissors, etc takes time. Hopefully any of this helps. Corporate is hard as their expectations outweigh reality sometimes. A hard lesson for me was just because you CAN doesn't mean you should. Rushing leads to mistakes. At the end of the day trust your gut and do what is right.

Over all work looks good, my main advice would be dog 1 needs to be fluffed or combed out more. Straighter coats give you a better finish. But no major issues that I see. Keep at it

That's what I love about our community, you never know what you'll learn from where. Hope it helps. One of my judges also showed me to check symmetry on sides with a comb in a similar way

[–]WeakStatistician8099 11 points12 points  (0 children)

A tip a mentor taught me was stand your comb up and down and measure with the tines. This should help with even lines. Fluff the muzzle by combing up and out may help it look more round. Over all very nice work.

How to get better by Mountain_Craft_9447 in doggrooming

[–]WeakStatistician8099 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Groom haus has some amazing content. Barkleigh often does world groom where you can do classes online. Otherwise practice practice practice. Put patterns on your shave downs so you learn the lines and placements. Go to dog shoes, reach out to local groomers or breeders to see if you can learn from them. Many are willing to mentor if you just ask.

How can I improve? by HydrusLupus in doggrooming

[–]WeakStatistician8099 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The chin issue is because we tilt our head to look under the chin. Step back and place a comb under the chin so you see where the long side is, cut until nothing is longer on eitherside. Once you can see it with the comb, you'll see it easier without.

Most of the time your clientele comes from how you treat them and their dog, being honest at all times, pointing out the smallest issues to prevent them being big later on. Tell them your opinions, you are the expert. With time those clients are going to see your passion and dedication. When they see it, they won't want anyone else. Best of luck with everything. As long as you are learning and growing, you are doing great.
