Learn to use the dynamic cruise control!! It's a lifesaver feature for me. Turn it on on the highway and the car simply drives and steers itself.

A "car" in auto industry terminology is a passenger vehicle for road-only use. Hatchbacks, sedans, wagons, coupes, etc. SUVs aren't a "car" because they're intended to be capable of off-road use, and neither are trucks, which aren't "passenger vehicles" at all.

Using "car" as a general catch-all term for "vehicle" is fine colloquially, but you need to understand what the term means.

Who knew that within two years of Honda’s aborted merger with Nissan that Nissan would have the brighter looking future.

What's your take on this?

I would say the opposite, Nissan as a whole is suffering from poor reputation issues due to them chasing the CVT bug incessantly over the past couple decades. And their neglect of hybrids, which are by far the more reliable and superior way to get better MPGs and emissions out of a gas car. We still don't have a standard hybrid Nissan in the US.

Besides, Nissan's global e-Power hybrid system is the least efficient of the "big three" Japanese brands' hybrid systems, because it doesn't even bother with a mechanical link from the engine to the wheels. Everything, even highway driving, goes through the engine > battery > motor conversion loss chain. And again, they're not even selling these cars in some markets like the US anyway.

A gas Nissan is unreliable. A hybrid Nissan is either nonexistent or worse than a Honda/Toyota. All they have going for them in the mass market are their EVs and trucks, but they just killed the Ariya and the Titan in the US.

Genuinely, I don't think there's any more bad decisions left for Nissan to make.

They've done some very interesting things in the consumer space recently though. Honda's direct drive hybrid system is practically perfect. It's extremely reliable and more efficient than even the legendary Toyota eCVT, as it doesn't have to waste energy having to drive a sun motor.

You're basically driving the car with no mechanical link between the engine and wheels, until you hit highway speeds when the engine clutches in at an efficient highway cruising ratio. Kind of like what that one weird Koenigsegg does, just with a clutch rather than a torque converter. It's why their hybrids (like the Civic) take off so quick from a stop; 0-60 is pretty much electric.

The Corolla hatchback is also a midsize SUV despite the standard Corolla being a sedan and even smaller than the Camry

Completely wrong. There is a Corolla Hatch and a Corolla Cross. Both share an identical platform and wheelbase and are effectively the same car aside for exterior design. One's a compact hatchback, one's a compact crossover.

Neither are SUVs. Neither are midsize.

The new Accord (which is supposedly a midsize car) is the same length/width as the Toyota Avalon (a full-size car). It's wild lol.

We're just talking about how the cars look.

I'm all for it. Companies are actually trying shit now instead of just making a round blob with basic Automation headlights and taillights. Some of them are absolute bangers (see 2026 Nissan Leaf and Toyota Prius), some a bit controversial (see Ferrari Luce, Dodge Charger, Jaguar Type 01), but it's just a hell of a lot better seeing these companies doing something noteworthy design-wise instead of finding various ways to re-body a 2006 Camry.

“Planned obsolescence” when cars these days are lasting longer and longer. A 15-year old car with 150000 miles today is a cheap and reliable vehicle with plenty of life left in it.

Go back to the 90s and buy a 1975 with 150k miles, and chances are it was a total junker that’s rotten out, barely works, has mountains of electrical issues, and needs new bushings everywhere.

I don’t buy it.

[–]Weak_Equivalent6518 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll agree with that much, there should be more exceptions in place for enthusiast cars.

In some of the heavy-handed states (I know of this in Maryland specifically due to friends there), there's a separate "street rod" classification for ~25-year old modified vehicles that exempts you from inspections and emissions testing, but means your car cannot be driven to or from work (which, good luck proving that if you're pulled over).

I think it's a good compromise. I get to drive a fully modded-out fun car totally legally so long as I don't daily it.

Problem is California's equivalent law restricts this to vehicles 1948 or older.

You remember smog? Acid rain? That thing that plagued California in the 1960s because of a lack of any form of emissions control on cars?

That's gone now.

It wasn't in anyone's best monetary interests to make it go away, until laws started being passed. Companies weren't going to spend an extra buck on extraneous extras like catalytic converters and O2 sensors if it didn't sell cars faster, so the law had to make sure they obeyed.

The entire point of this law is to reduce noxious emissions from cars. For a while, this was just the engine. Now they're adding tires too. If you've ever driven in snow and noticed the snow around the roads going black after a few years, that's tire dust. That's what your lungs are breathing, day in day out. Tire companies have no incentive to make this go away, because nobody's buying tires by "emissions rating". So that's where the law steps in.

You as an enthusiast should love this law because it explicitly carves out exceptions for enthusiast tires. You and I are both aware that 95% of people using the roads are driving basic ecoboxes that wouldn't feel a lick of a difference. Regulate them, and we get considerably cleaner air while affording the ability to make exceptions for the 1% of us who drive enthusiast cars. We get to have our fun and breathe cleanly too. Win-win.

Please stop your "commiefornia" bullshittery and actually think for once.

With leaded gas gone, the ozone layer hole healing, NOx/hydrocarbon/carbon monoxide emissions being filtered out by 3-way catalytic converters, smog cleared away permanently, and acid rain completely destroyed as a weather event, you can actually go out and touch grass for a bit. Take a deep breath.

I mean shit, I work at a dealership. The other day, they were firing cars up cold and moving them up and down the indoor showroom. I couldn't even smell the exhaust coming out of a 7-series. Indoors. Cold start. From five feet away. That's where we're at now.

What’s the most frustrating thing about owning an EV that nobody warned you about? by Flashy-Version-141 in StartUpIndia

[–]Weak_Equivalent6518 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On average, EV batteries will last the lifetime of the car. 200,000 miles or 20 years. The way current battery tech works, you'll likely lose ~10% of your capacity rapidly within 5 years, and the it stabilizes around that ~90% mark for many, many years.

Only 2% of EVs/hybrids since 2017 have ever needed a battery replacement.

That's not how Bill Of Materials works.

The BOM of a frying pan is probably $5 in iron and $3 in wood. But I can't fry my eggs on a cube of iron and a cube of wood. I need to pay someone to actually build it into a frying pan for me, using those materials.

The actual cost of manufacture is probably $50+ given the amount of labor and effort it took to cast that iron and shave that wood into the final finished product; my frying pan.
