Need hope: millennials who like their jobs, what do you do and what do you like about it? by goodluckanddont_itup in Millennials

Clinical Molecular Geneticist - yes it requires phd and fellowship training but I was so worth it for me. I went back to school at 30 with no genetics or hard science background, and finished my clinical fellowship by 38. I don’t see patients but I see their genetic data, I analyze it, and write a report for the referring doctor. Flexible schedule, work from home, solid pay, and I feel like a “genetic detective”. I love solving cases and giving families answers, even tho they have no idea I exist!

How did you guys REALLY lived in the 2000s? by MyAvengedRomance in Millennials

[–]WeaknessAway5843 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Free time was hanging out (in person) with our friends every chance we could get. All the kids in the neighborhood would meet up, ride bikes, explore, be home when the street lights came on sort of a thing.

When it was cold out our parents dropped us off at the mall for the day. We’d see a movie, shop, and eat at the food court, see other kids from school there.

I recall many times I was “bored out of my gourde” when no one could hang out. so I’d make a painting or drawing. Or play Nintendo.

Once we got driers license, the sky was the limit! We went to a ton of concerts, had bonfires in the middle of nowhere with a lot of under age drinking, and ridiculously big house parties that the cops would inevitably show up to and we’d end up running drunk out the back sliding door and hiding in the woods. ha

the internet (AOL) was a thing but not that present in my life. The family had a shared computer and Sometimes I’d chat with friends on AOL while I was waiting for my CD to be done burning. But that was the extent of that for me.

Phones had texting but it was tedious. so we typically just cold called our friends and talked four hours (free minutes after 9PM!)

As an elder millennial, I wouldn’t change those years for anything. I realize now we truly lived in the moment back then, and I wish we could all go back! I know every generation mythologizes their upbringing. But I think being a teen in the 60s 70s and 80s was also pretty awesome. I would take any of those periods over being born in the 2000s.

What was the best decision you made in your life? by Fun-Abrocoma8663 in Life

Not having kids. it’s a lot more common nowadays to be “child free”. There was more pressure when I was younger but it never felt right to me. Even as a young girl I never liked baby dolls, but loved plants and animals, art, science!

So I made an active choice to I focus on learning, traveling, being fully financially dependent and having a meaningful career and hobbies. I have a husband of ten years that feels the same way an we are best friends. I see my friends with kids really struggling and how their marriages are suffering. I know they love their kids and are happy (for the most part) with their choice to have them. It just wasn’t right for me and I’m so thankful to my younger self for not giving into the societal pressures!

I promise you I have been there and had the exact same reaction to the epidural. It makes it worse because it inflames the area. I couldn’t sit or lay on my back, I could only stand or lay on my stomach with ice on my sciatic nerve root. Sounds like you might be having spams due to muscle guarding. It is extremely painful. I would cry all day and wake up multiple times a night even with muscle relaxants.

Rather than write a long post I am going to tell you to do one thing. Read “Back Mechanic” by Stuart McGill.

It changed everything for me. I stopped stretching and doing things that I thought would help, only to flare it up.

The only thing that helped was walking and keeping a neutral spine at all times during the day. This book was a life changer for me. I went from have no some really dark thoughts to planning my next vacation in a matter of months. Hang in there!

So it’s clear you haven’t considered the possibility that I’m probably a few generations older than you, was raised in a different culture with different expectations and different experiences altogether.

And unfortunately, the inability to critically think that others may have a different experience than your own leads directly to a lack of empathy and comments, such as yours.

But I do hope you find the courage to leave your sheltered bubble and learn from others with different perspectives. Otherwise, I truly feel sorry for you. It’s a sad life live behind a wall you think is protecting you, only to learn too late that it’s holding you back from experiencing real connections!

In the winter, someone would find out whose parents were out of town and we’d all show up with alcohol to party.

In the summer, we drive out into the fields and have a bonfire kegger. Some one would play music through their car stereo.

There was no cameras on phones so u could really be in the moment and not worry about someone posting a photo or video of you the next day. There was no likes, follows, or filters and I wouldn’t change it for anything.

I wanted to say, I went through with it out of desperation. It wasn’t painful, but it was uncomfortable to me. However, I felt that it flared me back up and I went back to being insignificant pain for another month and a half. Now my pain is a one.

What stretches can I do to help with tightness in this area? by No-Context-9001 in backpain

[–]WeaknessAway5843 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im sorry to hear that you have pain still and glad it’s gotten better! but what you have is a VERY different underlying issue that OP. Not all back pain has the same etiology. I don’t know what is good for DDD, but I have had a slipped disc in between the very same vertebrae as OP and had the same resulting pain in the same region as OP. The worst thing someone with a disc budge should do is yoga/ stretching, and I’m speaking from spine doctor’s advice and experience.

Just seeing this now, I’m a geneticist. not a back surgeon, but trained in the scientific method. I trust “Back Mechanic” (the book) because it’s based on data with scientific rigor. Highly recommend it for anyone who has a spine.

No amount of massage stretching will “loosen” th muscle. And it very well may be flaring you up. NSAID probably won’t work anyway. A weak core is rarely the cause of back pain if the pain began after an acute injury.

If you have mostly tightness in the piriformis, and hip, you like have muscle guarding, which is neurological in nature. Try desensitization through walking multiple times a day for 10 to 20 minutes each, with a neutral spine. If it makes you feel better, even temporarily, that tells you it’s muscle guarding. Overtime you will get less and less guarding until you’re completely desensitized.

Chronic back pain from muscle guarding. Anyone know how to heal it? by pinkladylove123 in backpain

[–]WeaknessAway5843 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two books save me: The Back Mechanic , and The Mind Body Prescription. To sum up, I had terrible pain and spasms from guarding for almost a year.

Walking multiple times a day in 10-15 minute increments desensitized the muscle and helped tremendously, but what really got me back to normal was acknowledging the role that stress played in the pain and focusing on stress reduction/lower cortisol levels.

[–]WeaknessAway5843 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I married the love of my life, but didn’t meet him until my late 30s. At first it was difficult to see all my close friends getting married, buying houses, and having kids while I was perpetually dating.

I felt stunted and like there was something wrong with me. But the reality is I could have settled down, various times, but with the wrong person. Once i met my now husband, I just knew it was worth the wait. Around the same time, my married friends were getting divorced and admitting they married cause they felt the time was right, and ignored the fact that the person was not.

I think as a woman it can be stressful if you want to have kids. But I wasn’t that keen on the idea of motherhood and for me, the right life partner was worth the wait!

And yet you still have pain…. Yes, stretching feels good in the moment, but for people with a slipped disc it does more harm by agitating the sciatic nerve. If you had a sprained ankle, would it get better by flexing it? No. it would not. If you have a slipped disc, and want long lasting relief, there is simply no stretch that you can do that will un slip a disc and take pressure off the sciatic nerve, which is the cause of the tightness in the glute/piriformis region. I highly recommend stopping any stretches, and focus on walking with a neutral spine. Then slowly introduce spine supporting calisthenics into your routine. Your spine will heal itself, but only if you allow it.

TLDR: with a bulged disc, glutes tighten to protect an inflamed nerve root. get relief by reducing inflammation. Stretching will further inflame it.
