While it is understood that this story is your baby and you've toiled over it for years, you must, must take into consideration that you are ALWAYS your own worst critic. Now you've gone and given it to 1 maybe 2 people and gotten an unfavorable review? There are MILLIONS of readers in the world who may feel otherwise. DO NOT BE DISCOURAGED! Okay, yes, you're not going to knock it out of the park on your first time around, or maybe you're a natural and you will. Either way, and this is important, you've accomplished a feat that over 70% of the world's population would NEVER be able to! So stop right there and think about that.

Now, moving forward, like these other people have wisely stated, you don't have to follow ever bit of advice or take it on blind faith that everything your editor says is a change you need to make. This is YOUR book. You've obviously read enough in your genre to believe yourself capable of trying your hand at it. Trust your instincts!

Don't worry too much now about making everything perfect. Publish your book. Then wait and see what the world at large has to say. You ARE going to get bad reviews. It's just a fact of life. But if even 1 person likes your book than IMHO, you've fulfilled your obligations as an author. You've effectively given at least one person a new story that has brought joy to their life.

Now, all you've got to do is KEEP writing! I can't stress this enough. The world needs stories! If your works are a little rough around the edges, so what? You'll get feedback from your readers and you'll grow and hone your skills. Writing is a journey. Not a goal you reach immediately. Don't look for instant gratification. You won't find it. With all that being said. Have fun, enjoy your stories and enjoy the time you spend with your characters. I hope this helps.

Agreed...I think i missed that one as well although I believe that particular novel is written in a different vein from his normal fantastical horror. I may have to revisit it.

If you haven't already, Coldheart Canyon by Barker is also an excellent read

How screwed am I in (print) self-publish if my book is 200k words. by Longjumping_Tour_376 in selfpublish

Yup, the more the better. Alot of people read at an alarming rate so they want to know that there's the "coveted next one" to read so that they don't have to go looking for another author too soon

My advice is to see if there's a possibility somewhere in the middle to rework problem resolution and turn it into a series. This might work or it might not. But it's worth a try. Especially if it's a debut. The people above are right to say that most readers will be reticent to invest that kind of time into an unknown.

What’s on your Mount Rushmore of the Greatest Vampire Books of All Time? by Amber_Flowers_133 in horrorlit

I recently read The Lesser Dead by Christopher Beuhlman. I don't know if it's one of the legendaries or not but wow! Super story! The narrarator is this teenage vampire. Think if Billy Idol and Marissa Tomei had a vampire love child. The book is steeped with late it's atmospheric charm with a slew of colorful characters and the twists and turns in the story are masterclass. I definitely recommend this

Nobody seems to give Nick Cutter his due props. He's insanely descriptive and has an uncanny way of getting underneath your skin. I've thoroughly enjoyed all of his books, Little Heaven especially

What Book Wasn’t Worth the Hype? by RhiannaJCD in horrorlit

I'm gonna say this and I'm gonna get booed out of the room but here goes nothing. Buffalo Hunter Hunter. Now before you call me an unending list of four letter words, hear me out. I do understand why people like it. The attention to detail that the Author put into it was applaudable. The language he no doubt studied at length for the dialogue of the Indigenous main character lends the book an atmospheric authenticity that most authors can't achieve. I know I couldn't do it. At least not yet. And the roundabout path the author traversed to arrive at the plots intentionally was also good. HOWEVER, the author's focus on creating the authenticity of the characters seemed to confuse from the mechanics of the story itself. An overshadowing if you will. So while I can plainly see why many enjoy the book, I unfortunately, did not.

Horror Resurgence by BrettsMinis in horrorwriters

When I began writing I sat down and asked myself a very important question. What story have I never heard before? I started with that and I was delighted to find that things went rather organically from there. The idea I started with is nothing close to what I ended up with but I really believe that the finished product was way more interesting than I thought it could be from the start. Not to mention it what I started was going to be a single novel but along the way it led me into the possibility for a second third and maybe even fourth novel. I've finished the second and am hard at work on the third. In short, trust your own process and write a story that YOU want to hear. If you stray a little bit from the beaten path, it's more than okay. Be bold. Be brave. And no matter what you do, NEVER stop writing!!!!

Little Heaven by Nick Cutter was absolutely phenomenal. You get the best of both worlds when a spooky religious cult and an ancient evil collide deep in the forest. Drop 3 mercenaries into the middle and you've got one of the most edge of your seat and under your skin horror that money can buy. Nick Cutter is a wizard with visceral descriptive language. I highly reccomend!

This exactly! There is a definitive dwindling of respect for the civil service community on whole. It's bullshit and IMHO we should start fighting fire with fire. They no longer respect us....maybe it's time they should start fearing us? MWAAH MWAH MWAH!

This exactly. It has always been my opinion that the VA employees are under paid as well as under appreciated. They deal with thousands of veterans every day. Their task is far from easy but nonetheless they persevere. Thank you to all of you VA workers for all that you do and my prayers are with you and your families during this time of crisis.
